Sprouts Farmers' New Stores Power Impressive Comparable Sales Growth

Globe and Mail4 days ago
Sprouts Farmers Market, Inc. SFM is demonstrating robust performance from its new store openings. In the first quarter of 2025, the company reported impressive 19% net sales growth and 11.7% comparable store sales growth. Management attributed this solid performance directly to the success of new stores, which are entering the comparable store base with strong momentum.
SFM focuses on accelerating the performance of new locations, targeting an average of $13 million in annual sales in the first year, with expectations for 20% to 25% growth over the following four years. This expansion strategy is supported by a more efficient, smaller box format that reduces risk while enhancing profitability. With plans to open at least 35 new stores in 2025 and ample "white space" identified for future growth, the strong initial comparable sales from these new openings point to a promising trajectory for Sprouts Farmers.
The company's revamped site selection model focuses on optimizing convenience for health-conscious shoppers, while its differentiated offering of fresh, attribute-driven products continues to resonate. New stores are opening with healthy sales volumes and ramping up quickly, making meaningful contributions to overall comparable sales growth.
The consistent strength in comps from new stores highlights that these openings are more than just incremental additions. They are positioning SFM to capture a greater share of the fast-growing $290 billion health-focused grocery market. Beyond driving sales, these newer locations are expected to support long-term EBIT margin stability through fixed cost leverage and ongoing supply-chain optimization.
How Do DG and TGT Stack Up Against SFM's Sales Surge?
Dollar General Corporation DG reported a 2.4% increase in first-quarter fiscal 2025 same-store sales, driven by a 2.7% rise in the average transaction amount, though partially offset by a 0.3% decline in customer traffic. Dollar General saw growth across all key product categories, including consumables, seasonal, home products and apparel. Dollar General now expects same-store sales to rise between 1.5% and 2.5% compared to its prior forecast of 1.2% to 2.2%.
Target Corporation TGT experienced a 3.8% decline in comparable sales, following a 1.5% increase in the preceding quarter. This drop was attributed to a 5.7% fall in Target's comparable store sales, which was somewhat offset by a 4.7% increase in comparable digital sales. Target highlighted that traffic, or the number of transactions, dropped 2.4%, and the average transaction amount decreased 1.4%.

Quebec-based department store Simons has announced the opening date for its first Toronto store

Customers walk into the Simons store at Londonderry Mall in Edmonton on Saturday, August 26, 2017. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jason Franson Quebec-based department store Simons will be officially opening its first Toronto location next month. The company announced this week that it will be opening its doors to customers at the Yorkdale Shopping Centre location on Aug. 14. The company previously announced plans to expand its brick-and-mortar footprint to both Yorkdale and The Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto. Simons will partially occupy the space that was previously home to Nordstrom at both the Eaton Centre and Yorkdale after the retailer's exit from the Canadian marketplace in 2023. 'Simons is a bit of an enigma,' retail analyst Bruce Winder told CP24 on Friday. 'They've done very well. They've been very careful in terms of how they expand.' Including the expansion in Toronto, the department store currently only has about 17 locations across Canada. 'I think the thing that really drives Simons is they have incredible designs that are curated for customers and they are a little avant-garde,' he said. 'They have price-points that are very high but they also have very accessible price points.' Winder noted that with one store in the GTA already, located at Mississauga's Square One Shopping Centre, there is a bit of a risk opening two new Toronto stores. 'There is a little bit of a risk that they have too many stores in Toronto but if they do a good job, I think they can make it work,' he added. The company has not yet revealed when the Eaton Centre location will be opening, saying only that it is slated to open at the downtown shopping centre sometime in the fall of 2025 or the winter of 2026.

Immigrant children at risk of losing daycare spots can keep them: Quebec minister

Children's backpacks and shoes are seen at a daycare. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darryl Dyck) The François Legault government says it will partially suspend its directive that would expel many immigrant children from subsidized daycares and early childhood centres (CPEs) in Quebec. The directive from the Ministry of Family Affairs (MFA), published earlier this month, targets children whose parents have open work permits in the province. It stipulates that these foreign workers are not eligible for the standard $9.35 daily rate for childcare services. After an outcry, the ministry asked the network 'not to terminate the agreements of children who already have a place before the end of the ongoing checks,' said Family Minister Suzanne Roy on social media platform X on Friday. She clarified that the directive still applies to new admissions. 'Parents who are not eligible will not be able to benefit from a subsidized spot,' Roy said. Several families said this week that their children, who have been attending subsidized daycare for over a year, were at risk of being expelled. Responding to the challenge to the directive earlier this week, the minister said that 'the MFA will review the files of children who are already receiving services' before taking any action. Québec solidaire spokesperson Guillaume Cliche-Rivard said he was relieved by the government's reversal on Friday. 'It was the only thing to do,' he said in a statement. 'Not only would it have torn children away from their homes, but we have also seen numerous examples in recent days of immigrant parents who would have had to leave their jobs in essential sectors, such as caregivers and even childcare workers.' According to the directive, dated July 9, foreign workers with a closed work permit naming a specific employer and duration of employment, can enrol their children in Quebec's subsidized daycare system. Those with an open work permit, which allows them to work for any employer in Canada, are not eligible for a reduced-contribution spot. The directive is based on the Reduced Contribution Regulation, which has been in place since 1997. Roy argued on Wednesday that this rule 'must apply' as it 'exists out of fairness to Quebec families who are waiting for a spot.' — This story by The Canadian Press was first published in French on July 25, 2025 with information from Maura Forrest.
