Morning runs, ice workouts: How UAE residents are staying fit, beating summer heat

Khaleej Times5 hours ago
From changing their exercise timings to trying out new activities, UAE fitness enthusiasts are experimenting with their workouts this summer. As UAE summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°, some individuals have opted to run before dawn, while others participate in activities such as ice baths.
Former international sprinter Daniel Oderinde, an athletics coach and runner based in Dubai, has observed a significant shift in workout routines preferences during the summer. "I've noticed, both in my training and when coaching others, that the heat doesn't mean people stop, it just means they change when and how they train,' he said.
He said that he often runs early in the morning or later in the evening. 'I often move runs to early mornings before the sun is fully out, like the Grey Days 5K social runs hosted with New Balance or opt for evening sessions after work when it's a bit cooler," he said. "On days when the heat is unbearable, I take my runs indoors to the treadmill to stay on track safely."
He added that this shift during summer months required more planning. 'An early morning run means prioritising sleep the night before and staying hydrated in advance,' he said. 'Evening sessions require planning meals and water intake carefully throughout the day to avoid cramping and ensure my body is fuelled to perform."
Marked shift in workout routine
According to Julien Khoury, founder of Dubai wellness centre Breasy, they have seen a "distinct shift" in workout preferences as the warmer months approach. "There's a growing inclination towards early morning starts to fully capitalise on the cooler hours before the sun reaches its peak," she said. "Also, as the day winds down, we see a strong pull towards later evening sessions."
She said that Breasy had responded to this demand by adjusting timings and offering a relaxed schedule. "For our outdoor offerings like yoga sessions, gym workouts, and run club, we've moved to earlier morning starts,' she said.
'Our sunset and evening sessions now begin slightly later, always culminating with an invigorating cold plunge. We also understand that summer brings a natural ebb and flow with holidays, so we've adopted a more relaxed and reduced schedule. This flexibility ensures our community members can travel and return without missing a beat. For example, our popular floating breathwork sessions at Aura Skypool are now running bi-weekly through the summer.'
Workouts with ice
Fitness company GymNation took advantage of the summer months by offering a one-of-a-kind workout session at one of its branches. The 'Coolest Class in Dubai' fitness experience, which was offered at the Motor City branch every Saturday in July, included workouts with ice and fans.
One of the activities, Blizzard Sprints, required participants to run on treadmills against giant fans. The Polar Push involved sledge pushes with ice blocks, and the Glacier Grip challenge included ice-bucket farmer carries.
According to Rory McEntee, the company's Chief Marketing Officer, the response to these unique classes was 'overwhelmingly positive' and the sessions may be extended. 'Classes have booked out so quickly that we've implemented a ballot system to keep it fair and give as many people as possible the chance to participate,' he said. 'Considering this demand, we're already exploring options to increase capacity and run additional sessions to meet interest.'

Pogacar credits 'great atmosphere' at UAE Team Emirates for Tour de France triumph

Moments after becoming a four-time Tour de France champion, Tadej Pogacar celebrated the incredible achievement with his UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammates in Paris. The Slovenian rider acknowledged that everyone in team played a big role in his triumph. For Pogacar, his fourth Tour success has perhaps been his most resounding yet, with the Slovenian not losing a single second on the road to any of the top five in the general classification between stages 1-20. He becomes only the second rider in Tour de France history, after Maurice Garin in 1903, to do so. Along the way, Pogacar has taken four memorable stage victories and held his great rival Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) at arm's length. The Danish two-time Tour champion left no stone unturned in his bid to dethrone Pogacar in the Grand Boucle, including an all-or-nothing siege on stage 18, but was unable to repeat his victories of 2022 and 2023. For his efforts, Vingegaard was rewarded with second place in the overall, as Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe's Florian Lipowitz rounded out the podium in third. For UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Pogacar led the line in style but did so with the unwavering support of his teammates, from Lille to Paris via the Pyrenees and the Alps. The Emirati squad ends its ninth Tour de France with five stage victories, including four from Pogacar and Tim Wellens' superb stage 15 win from the breakaway. It takes UAE Team Emirates-XRG to 26 stage wins on the sport's grandest stage. Sporting the hallowed yellow jersey through 13 stages and on the final podium in Paris, Pogacar also vanquishes the polka dot jersey as the winner of the King of the Mountains classification. It is the third time that the Slovenian has won both classifications in his career, and comes courtesy of his dominant displays in mountain stages. 'I am just speechless. To win a fourth Tour de France and finish six years in a row on the podium, this one feels especially amazing. I am super proud that I can wear this yellow jersey," Pogacar said. 'I think it all started with how we started to ride with the team. We had a great atmosphere, great team, great spirit. We went fighting from day one, and then after stage 5 and Mûr-de-Bretagne, I knew that I had good legs to compete for the victory. 'We just kept on fighting, and then I think the second week was the decisive moment. We took the advantage and we went more comfortably into the third week.' He also praised Vingegaard's fierce competitive nature as a cyclist. 'Myself and Jonas [Vingegaard] talked in the neutral zone about how much has changed in the last five years of us racing against each other," Pogacar said. "We raised the level of each other much higher, and we push ourselves to the limit to try to beat each other. I must say that battling against Jonas was again a tough experience, but I must say respect to him, and a big congratulations for his fight. 'It was an incredible race. Now it's time to celebrate.' To celebrate his achievements, Pogacar rode aboard an all-yellow Colnago Y1Rs on stage 21, with a matching helmet and sunglasses from MET and Scicon, respectively. His teammates, meanwhile, sported custom-designed, yellow-infused kits from the historic Italian brand, Pissei. After three weeks of from-the-gun racing around France, Sunday offered a welcome moment of celebration for those who had worked tirelessly to land the top step in Paris. Pogacar now draws level with Chris Froome on four Tour de France victories, and at just 26 years of age, his eyes will slowly turn to the record holders Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain — all of whom ended their careers with five Tour wins. Moving to over 100 career victories during this year's race, Pogacar continues to define sporting excellence, and UAE Team Emirates-XRG remains at his side all the way.

Asia Cup 2025 Heads to UAE in September T20 Showdown

The Men's Asia Cup 2025 is officially happening in the UAE from September 9 to 28, and it's coming in hot with the T20 format — perfect timing as teams gear up for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. ACC President Mohsin Naqvi, who's also Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief, made the announcement after the ACC meeting in Dhaka. India's reps joined in virtually (because, yep, politics). Why the Move From India? Originally meant to be held in India, the tourney got a venue switch due to India-Pakistan tensions — again. So now, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah are stepping in to host the action. The Line-Up: Who's Playing? Eight teams are in: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong. And yes, an India vs. Pakistan match (or three!) could be on the cards — group stage, Super Fours, and maybe even the final. What's At Stake?

Tadej Pogačar wins his fourth Tour de France for UAE Team Emirates-XRG

Finishing fourth on stage 21, Tadej Pogačar became a four-time Tour de France champion on Sunday afternoon. The world champion was able to celebrate the incredible achievement with his UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammates in Paris, all of whom have been instrumental in helping the Emirati squad secure its fourth title in six years. For Pogačar, his fourth Tour success has perhaps been his most resounding yet, with the Slovenian not losing a single second on the road to any of the top five in the general classification between stages 1-20. He becomes only the second rider in Tour de France history, after Maurice Garin in 1903, to do so. Along the way, Pogačar has taken four memorable stage victories and held his great rival Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) at arm's length. The Danish two-time Tour champion left no stone unturned in his bid to dethrone Pogačar in the Grand Boucle, including an all-or-nothing siege on stage 18, but was unable to repeat his victories of 2022 and 2023. For his efforts, Vingegaard was rewarded with second place in the overall, as Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe's Florian Lipowitz rounded out the podium in third. For the UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Pogačar led the line in style but did so with the unwavering support of his teammates, from Lille to Paris via the Pyrenees and the Alps. The Emirati squad ends its ninth Tour de France with five stage victories, including four from Pogačar and Tim Wellens' superb stage 15 win from the breakaway. It takes UAE Team Emirates-XRG to 26 stage wins on the sport's grandest stage. Sporting the hallowed Yellow Jersey through 13 stages and on the final podium in Paris, Pogačar also vanquishes the polka dot jersey as the winner of the King of the Mountains classification. It is the third time that the Slovenian has won both classifications in his career, and comes courtesy of his dominant displays in mountain stages. The tale of this Tour de France, as was expected ahead of the race, is one of three weeks. From the moment that the flag dropped in Lille at the Grand Départ, Pogačar and his teammates got stuck into the all-action racing which stretched across Brittany and Normandy. Over a series of Classics-style stages, the 26-year-old won a blockbuster affair to Rouen on stage 4 before vanquishing the climb to Mûr-de-Bretagne on stage 7. Heading into the first rest day down a teammate, UAE Team Emirates-XRG bounced back in style through the race's second week, as the Tour de France headed into the Pyrenees. Of the five stages before the second rest day, Pogačar claimed back-to-back victories on Hautacam and Peyragudes, before Wellens rounded out the week with his sensational win on stage 15. In the biggest race of the season, UAE Team Emirates-XRG and Tadej Pogačar are four-time Tour de France champions. Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates-XRG won the 2025 Tour de France with a total time of 76:00:32, finishing 4:24 ahead of Jonas Vingegaard (Visma–Lease a Bike) and 11:00 ahead of Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe).
