Indigenous weapons pipped Chinese systems in Operation Sindoor, says DRDO chief

Time of India22-05-2025
Nagpur:
Operation Sindoor
undoubtedly proved the superiority of India's indigenous weapons systems over those made in China, said chairman of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Samir Kamat, here on Thursday.
"Pakistan deployed an array of systems procured from China. Our indigenous weapons easily outmatched the Chinese systems pitched by Pakistan," said Kamat.
However, he said some lessons were learnt from the conflict, and the country's premier defence research agency will look at improvements and induction of newer weapon systems. Not divulging specifics, he said some measures will be taken on an urgent basis. At the same time, he stressed the country's air defence system has proven to be highly effective.
Kamat was in the city to tour the defence manufacturing establishments located here, including Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL), a private sector ammunition maker, apart from DRDO's own chemical warfare unit and a facility of Brahmos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL).
The Nagastra-1 loitering munition made by Solar was reportedly used in Operation Sindoor. Even the propulsion system of BrahMos missiles that pounded Pakistan came from the company.

Talking to TOI, Kamat said the purpose of the visit was to check facilities here, and coming to Nagpur was very fruitful. "It's important to have a robust private sector that's involved in both manufacturing and R&D to sustain long-drawn conflicts," he said.
Kamat said a variety of systems can be put in place to counter drone attacks. He also mentioned that a range of sensors that can be used to detect and neutralise drones are expected to be inducted over the next six months or a year.
Kamat also stressed upon the need to coordinate between stakeholders in the defence sector, including the PSU and private manufacturers.
On indigenisation of conventional systems, he said the country is swiftly moving towards it. For example, in artillery, Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) and Dhanush guns have been developed. There may be some subsystems that have to be imported, but the dependence on foreign sources has reduced, he said.
On upcoming systems, he said DRDO includes VSHORADS, man-portable air defence systems, man-portable anti-tank guided missiles (MPTAGM), vertically launched short-range surface-to-air missiles (VLSRSAM), heavyweight and advanced lightweight torpedoes.

India gets first batch of Apache choppers after delay, to deploy along Pak border

After Operation Sindoor, while the Army focuses on enhancing its combat capabilities along the western border, the long wait for the first batch of Apache combat helicopters appears to be a delay of over 15 months, delivery of Apache attack helicopters that are to be deployed on the western border is likely to start soon. The Army Aviation Corps raised its first Apache squadron in March 2024 in Jodhpur, but after almost 15 months of its raising, the squadron remains sans the attack The delivery of Apache AH-64E attack helicopters from the United States has missed multiple deadlines. As part of a $600 million deal signed in 2020 with the US, the Indian Army expected delivery of six Apache helicopters by May-June 2024. However, the timeline was shifted to December 2024 due to supply chain disruption. Sources, aware of the delivery schedule, indicate that the first batch of these helicopters can be handed over to Indian Army's Aviation Corps by this six helicopters were planned to arrive in batches of three. The first batch was expected between May and June in 2024. However, the helicopters have yet to reach India, leaving the Army's first Apache Squadron in part of a $600 million deal signed with the US in 2020, the Indian Army is set to receive six Apache helicopters. Oracle stock surges: Hits record high on $30 billion cloud deal; revenue to flow from FY28

Representative image Oracle Corp's stock soared 4% on Monday to a record $218.63 after a regulatory filing revealed a major cloud computing agreement that could add more than $30 billion in annual revenue beginning fiscal 2028. The deal, which was disclosed ahead of a company-wide meeting, marks a significant milestone in Oracle's pivot to AI infrastructure and cloud services. CEO Safra Catz, in a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing, said Oracle is 'off to a strong start in FY26,' adding, 'Our MultiCloud database revenue continues to grow at over 100%, and we signed multiple large cloud services agreements including one that is expected to contribute more than $30 billion in annual revenue starting in FY28,' reported CNBC. Oracle did not name the customer, but speculation is high that it may be tied to OpenAI and SoftBank's $500 billion Stargate project, which aims to create a vast global network of AI data centres. Founder Larry Ellison had earlier hinted in March that Oracle expected to finalise a deal with Stargate 'fairly soon.' The $30 billion figure is nearly triple the $10.3 billion Oracle generated from its data centre operations in FY25, reported Financial Times. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sensação de queimação nos pés? Insira essa receita ao acordar G!Saú Undo The deal won't impact Oracle's FY26 guidance, but it cements its growing clout in the cloud and AI sectors. Analysts believe the revenue surge reflects long-term demand for computing infrastructure amid supply constraints at competitors like Microsoft. As per Financial Times, Oracle is spending around $40 billion on Nvidia's high-performance chips to power new data centres for OpenAI in Abilene, Texas. Although Stargate is 'still in formation,' Catz told investors that the company had already booked some revenue from OpenAI, with more coming from other contracts. Oracle's stock has jumped over 33% in 2024, buoyed by strong earnings, cloud expansion, and strategic AI tie-ups. These include a recent partnership with IBM and the Stargate venture. Earlier this year, Oracle also inked a cloud services deal with Chinese e-commerce giant Temu, adding further weight to its global ambitions. Having been slow to enter the cloud computing market, Oracle now finds itself among the top beneficiaries of surging demand for AI processing power. With this blockbuster cloud deal, the Austin-based tech giant appears well-positioned to capitalise on the next wave of digital transformation.
