Pope Francis, who made historic visit to Iraq, dies at 88
His historic trip to Iraq in March 2021—the first by a sitting pontiff to visit the nation, was one of the highlights of his pontificate. Pope Francis visited Baghdad, Najaf, Ur, Mosul, Qaraqosh, and Erbil over the course of four days, delivering a message of peace, reconciliation, and hope to a country that has been devastated by years of sectarian bloodshed and war.
During his tour, the Pope had a rare historic interfaith meeting with Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani, one of the most powerful leaders of Shiite Islam.

Additionally, he spoke to displaced Christian communities in Qaraqosh and offered prayers amidst the rubble of churches in Mosul.
In a startling revelation years later, Pope Francis disclosed in his autobiography that he had survived two assassination attempts during his visit to Mosul. According to a report by Iraqi News, British intelligence uncovered planned suicide bombings targeting the Pope, but Iraqi security forces managed to thwart the attacks before they could be carried out.
Pope Francis's visit to Iraq inspired initiatives to promote national cohesion and solidarity, leaving a lasting impression.
In recognition of his meeting with Al-Sistani, the Iraqi government subsequently declared March 6 to be the Day of Tolerance and Coexistence.

Amnesty International: Iraq must block or amend protest bill
Shafaq News – Baghdad On Friday, Amnesty International called on Iraqi lawmakers to reject or amend a proposed law on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, warning that it could further restrict civic space and violate fundamental rights. The draft legislation is scheduled for a parliamentary vote on August 2. Amnesty's Iraq researcher, Razaw Salihy, cautioned that the bill—if passed in its current form—would add to the tools already used by authorities to suppress dissent and silence critical voices. She emphasized that the law threatens Iraq's obligations under both its constitution and international human rights agreements. 'Lawmakers must not allow this proposal to become another mechanism for stifling public discourse,' Salihy said. Human rights defenders, journalists, and protesters across Iraq already face harassment, intimidation, and arrest—often under vague defamation laws and penal code articles incompatible with free speech protections. Amnesty highlighted that those speaking out against corruption or poor services are frequently targeted, especially in the context of worsening living conditions and persistent shortages of water, electricity, and basic infrastructure.

Amnesty urges Iraq's parliament to reject controversial free speech bill
Also in Iraq Iraqi parliament to vote on controversial protest bill Iraq arrests accused Anfal executioner Kirkuk court hands suspended sentence to Kurdish villager over disputed land Baghdad may waive oil shortfall blocking June budget transfers to Erbil: KRG source A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Amnesty International on Friday urged Iraqi lawmakers to reject a controversial freedom of expression bill that is scheduled to be put to a vote on Saturday, warning it could be used to restrict protests and limit free speech. 'Lawmakers must vote against or propose amendments to any laws that would add to the arsenal of tools that the authorities are already using to restrict civic space or betray Iraq's constitutional and international commitments to protect freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly,' said Razaw Salihy, Amnesty International's Iraq researcher. The bill would criminalize hate speech and insults to religious sects, ban nighttime protests, and restrict gatherings near hospitals, schools, and government buildings. The parliament's human rights committee has called for amendments or removal of numerous sections. Salihy warned that unofficial drafts reviewed by civil society groups suggest the law could lead to violations of the rights to free expression and peaceful assembly. She also criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the bill, saying it is being 'surreptitiously snuck through in a shroud of secrecy' and with 'no public debate.' The bill defines peaceful demonstration as a lawful public gathering to express opinions or demand rights, requiring prior approval from local authorities at least five days in advance. Denied requests for a demonstration can be appealed through the courts. Salihy warned that activists and journalists in Iraq face increasing repression, with arrests, harassment, and intimidation severely undermining free speech.

Neo-Nazi California Gubernatorial Candidate Posts Picture of Auschwitz as Their "0% Unemployment Plan" To Address Homelessness
A neo-Nazi and theocratic fascist is running for Governor of California in 2026. The neo-Nazi candidate's stated policies include plans to "revitalize … Catholicism's foundations" in California, to spread Christianity and Catholicism, end all immigration – legal and illegal – to stop "Americans" from being replaced, and imprison and exterminate, en masse, homeless people in California. Their proposed homelessness policy has drawn significant attention and backlash on X, as they posted a selfie of himself at Auschwitz with the caption: "My 0% Unemployment Plan" to promote their plan. In another controversial policy proposal, the neo-Nazi candidate stated they would deport all illegal immigrants, except for women, to whom they would give one year to marry a Californian incel to avoid deportation. The neo-Nazi also uses their X account to publish neo-Nazi content, such as calling for an increase in the "Aryan birth rate," lambasting Jews as the enemies of Americans, and publishing Hitler fancam videos. This report will review the candidate's X posts, seeking to illustrate their neo-Nazi and clerical fascistic ideology. YOU MUST BE SUBSCRIBED TO THE MEMRI VIOLENT EXTREMIST THREAT MONITOR (VETM) TO READ THE FULL REPORT. GOVERNMENT AND MEDIA CAN REQUEST A COPY BY WRITING TO DTTMSUBS@ WITH THE REPORT TITLE IN THE SUBJECT LINE. PLEASE INCLUDE FULL ORGANIZATIONAL DETAILS AND AN OFFICIAL EMAIL ADDRESS IN YOUR REQUEST. NOTE: WE ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE A COPY ONLY TO MEMBERS OF GOVERNMENT, LAW ENFORCEMENT, MEDIA, AND ACADEMIA, AND TO SUBSCRIBERS; IF YOU DO NOT MEET THESE CRITERIA PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST. Candidate's Neo-Nazi And Clerical Fascist Beliefs In their own words, the neo-Nazi's primary concern, aside from "White people and their well-being" is "the Catholic Church and spreading Christianity and Christian values because that is what is really most important." The California gubernatorial candidate detailed their white Christian nationalist views, in addition to praising neo-Nazi influencer Nick Fuentes, in a video soliciting donations that they posted to X on March 24. The full video includes the following: "As you can tell I am a firm supporter of Nick Fuentes, I put America first, America only. I also care about White people and their well-being. And, probably first, more primarily… I care about the Catholic Church and spreading Christianity and Christian values because that is what is really most important because in California we are spiritually damaged. But, I am feeling a Great Awakening … there's a Great Awakening happening right now in California. … Everything is all coming together so … if you believe in me and want us to win just donate like $5 or so, trust me it goes a long ways … Im going to promote Christianity because it's the right thing to do and as Christians we're supposed to die on that fact. We're supposed to live by our beliefs and be martyred if necessary and that's exactly how I live it. … America First, California First, Thank you so much! Let's win this thing!" Additionally, their March 24 repost of the video illustrated their neo-Nazi beliefs, with the caption: "Nothing less than a TOTAL ARYAN VICTORY in California will suffice! [lightning bolt emoji] California will become BETTER THAN EVER very soon. [bear emoji][purple heart emoji] Life for Californians will improve by leaps & bounds. [rising stock chart emoji][dancing man emoji]" Similarly, the neo-Nazi demonstrated their commitment to revolutionary Christo-fascism, in a July 20, 2025 post. The video post, published on X, featured fancam style edits of Jesus Christ with the caption: "The Constitution as it stands now is an obstacle to a new Holy American Empire." Many of their other posts highlight the prominence of their neo-Nazi ideology as well. For example, in an April 29, 2025, X post, they wrote: "Weimar Problems require Weimar Solutions. [bear emoji][lightning bolt emoji][American flag emoji]." The post was in reply to a post from that claimed "California lawmakers rejected a measure to classify the purchase of sex from 16- and 17-year-olds as a felony." / More recently, on July 25, 2025, the neo-Nazi published an X post of himself in front of Auschwitz with the caption: "My 0% Unemployment Plan," expressing their implicit support of the Holocaust and their desire to replicate its forced internment, labor, and extermination practices against the homeless population in the U.S. The post was in reply to a post claiming that "California now leads the nation in both unemployment and homelessness."
