Mable CFO's blueprint for women in finance
Having landed her first CFO job at just 29, Emma Clark knows a thing or two about building a successful career in finance.
Now Chief Financial and Operations officer at Mable, she has previously held executive roles at Redbubble Group, ANZ's Technology Division and Diners Club Australia.
In this interview, Emma discusses her career journey and shares her advice for aspiring finance leaders.
Q.What were the most important moments on your journey to CFO?
Clark: When I started at university, I set a goal to become a CFO, reach a target salary and buy my dream car by 30. It feels shallow now, but the fact that I set this goal was pivotal, because I didn't just meander around. I went and collected the skills and experience I needed to build towards it. If I didn't have that aspiration, I may still have achieved these goals, but it would have taken much longer.
I also decided early on to be a commercially minded CFO. Understanding yourself and knowing what type of CFO you want to be – your unique value proposition and how to develop it – is super important. I sought out people who could give me skills beyond finance, because to be a good commercial leader, you really need to understand how other people think.

Q.What's a non-financial skill that every CFO needs?
Clark: Public speaking stands you in amazing stead. One of my former bosses is the best public speaker I've ever met. He started coaching me pretty early in my career, which was pivotal. He'd put me up in front of a group, then at the end of it, he'd say, 'Here's where you nailed it, and here's where you lost them'. And even though I know it is a strength of mine, it's a skill I constantly refine with annual media training.
If you want a promotion, you need other non-financial skills like this. Investing in these has made the biggest difference to my career. I'm not the best technical accountant, but I can do other things that they can't. People want the full package in a CFO.
Q.What advice would you give to aspiring CFOs?
Clark: You need to be able to read the room. I think one of the challenges for finance professionals is that the numbers aren't always clear to others, even senior leaders. You can't just speak to them like you would to another finance professional. You really need to focus on the individual you're having the conversation with. Is this landing for them? Should I adapt my language or change the narrative?
You also need to understand people's motivations. In a group, work out where you can bring unique value to everyone's benefit. Know where you fit and what your superpower is.
Q.What's one challenge you've had to overcome to progress your career?
Clark: In job interviews, I tend to talk about what I don't know. During an interview for one CFO role, I said I hadn't done investor relations before, and it was brought up in every subsequent interview.
It was almost like disclosing issues to an auditor, only to have the same problems fed back to you at the end, like some big revelation. I realised no other candidates were going out of their way to say what they hadn't done before. I know now the importance of focusing on my strengths.
Q.What barriers do women face on the path to CFO?
Clark: One of the barriers is having children. When my kids were little, I spent my time at work feeling like a bad mum and at home feeling like a bad employee. You can feel like you are failing everywhere because you can't dedicate yourself wholly to just one thing.
Plus, it's not nine-to-five when you take up a senior role. Not just because of the work itself, but also the expectation that you'll travel, present at conferences, attend board meetings and be available for social occasions. There's all this stuff you can't say no to, but it takes you away from home even more.
I've seen my friends opt out of senior roles because they feel they would otherwise not provide enough value to their employer or have enough time to be present and engaged as mums.
Q.What advice would you give to organisations looking to support aspiring women?
Clark: It's about understanding these differences. I believe many women won't put their hand up for a job unless they feel they can do 100 per cent of it. Sometimes, we can be our own worst enemy.
Let's say you have two candidates, a man and a woman, who are equally skilled on paper. The man might tell you everything he can do, while the woman might tell you everything she can't. That doesn't make her less capable of doing the role. I would encourage employers to check their biases and understand that's just a style difference – it has little to no bearing on how well the person will ultimately perform the role.

It has also emerged that veteran Sydney businessman Basil Sellers had separately lent Shepherd $260,000 in 2022, with the amount owing at $358,000 last month. ‘Messed up': Sydney restaurant sparks fury over ‘live' dish
A Sydney restaurant has sparked outrage after serving a seemingly live lobster to customers. Korean seafood restaurant, Getbawi, opened its doors in late 2024 and has quickly garnered a following as one of the few Sydney restaurants specialising in hoe, or authentic raw seafood. But footage of what appears to be a live lobster being eaten by customers has now sparked controversy online and thrown concerns for animal welfare into the spotlight. In a clip posted to TikTok, a customer can be seen recording two other diners eating a lobster as it twitches and moves its legs. 'Wow, live lobster eating,' the cameraman says before asking if it's good. 'It's good, it's actually good,' replies one of the diners. Commenters were quick to express their shock over the clip with some branding it as 'straight up cruel.' 'How do you enjoy a meal while watching the poor thing suffer?,' questioned one viewer. 'This is so wrong,' wrote another. 'So cruel,' agreed a third. A spokesperson from Getbawi told that in order to ensure the freshest seafood they 'take the lobster from the aquarium when the customer orders and kill it straight away.' When asked how they respond to claims of animal cruelty a staff member replied, 'I can see how some people might think about it like that.' He added: 'It's for the freshness, we do it for the fish too. We have live fish for our sashimi.' The lobster is priced off market price but could set you back over $180 per kg. The Getbawi spokesperson did not agree with claims that its lobster is served alive. Lobsters sometimes exhibit movement after death due to residual nerve and muscle activity. When a crustacean is killed, its nervous system doesn't always shut down instantly and its muscles may continue to contract, resulting in twitching and movements. In Australia, the protection of shellfish under animal welfare laws is minimal. Most states and territories exclude crustaceans from their definitions of 'animals' under animal welfare legislation. In NSW the Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 protects crustaceans, but only when they are being prepared for sale or offered for consumption in places like restaurants or wet markets. In South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia, crustaceans are not included within the definition of animal and therefore have no protection under animal cruelty laws. A spokesperson for PETA told 'Prosecutors must throw the book at this restaurant for its disgusting and egregious breach of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, which clearly prohibits 'producing food for human consumption, in a manner that inflicted unnecessary pain upon the animal'.' The PETA spokesperson continued: 'The pain this lobster must've endured when his body was ripped apart and his delicate flesh sucked out is unimaginable. Research shows that lobsters have sophisticated nervous systems made up of ganglia throughout their bodies – this makes them extra-sensitive, meaning that they can feel every moment of their prolonged deaths when they're immersed in boiling water or eaten alive. 'This restaurant must immediately lose its licence, and people upset by this can do their part to help lobsters and other sea animals by leaving them off their plates.'

St Kilda Rd: Flight Centre's ex-HQ set for new shake-up
Flight Centre Travel Group's former Melbourne headquarters has hit the market with circa $35m price hopes, a sum tens of millions of dollars below its previous sale five years ago. Public records show the 10-storey building at 436 St Kilda Rd last changed hands for $62.15m in 2020. At the time, Flight Centre sold the site to a Melbourne-based property group. Luxe hotel hits market for just $2 — but there's a catch The address has now been listed as an opportunity for investors, owner-occupiers and developers to acquire as a potential residential, build-to-rent or co-living space, subject to council approval. Commercial real estate agency CBRE senior director Nick Peden said the 2322sq m site was close to the new Anzac train station and a spate of planned developments along St Kilda Rd. 'We have definitely had interest from interstate and a couple of offshore groups,' Mr Peden said. Buyers based in Singapore, mainland China and Malaysia have inquired about the property. 'It is about 30 per cent leased and I think there are four tenants,' Mr Peden said. 'It's more of a value-add type of opportunity rather than a passive investment opportunity.' Mr Peden said the reason behind the site's price point was that the market had changed dramatically since Covid. The owners had decided to sell rather than refurbish the tower in an attempt to attract more tenants, he added. The building features 167 at-grade and basement car parks, rear access via Queens Lane, and Melbourne CBD, Botanic Gardens and Shrine of Remembrance views. It's 500m to the Anzac train station which is set to open this year as part of the Victorian government's Metro Tunnel. Other projects taking shape or planned for St Kilda Rd include an $800m, 19-storey tower consisting of 200 apartments, proposed by developer the Gurner Group. Cbus Property has 77 apartments across a 17-level building slated for 37 St Kilda Rd with construction set to finish in 2028. And The Muse Melbourne, set for completion in October, will comprise 40 new residences at 409 St Kilda Rd. CBRE's Jamus Campbell, Kiran Pillai and Trent Hobart have the ex-Flight Centre listing alongside Mr Peden. Expressions of interest close on July 17.
