Virat Kohli's nephew Aryaveer, a leg-spinner, was sold to South Delhi Superstarz in the Delhi Premier League auction for Rs 1 lakh.
Ace India batter Virat Kohli's childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has revealed that although the Kohli family boasts of probably the greatest batter of this generation, the next gen of the family has dedicatedly taken to leg-spin.
On Sunday, July 6, Kohli 's nephew, his brother Vikas' son Aryaveer, was sold to the South Delhi Superstarz in the auction of the second season of the Delhi Premier League.
Aryaveer, who was in the players' pool for the first time in Delhi's premier T20 league, was picked up for Rs 1 lakh by South Delhi.
'I am glad. Aryaveer is a promising, sincere and hardworking kid. The Delhi Premier League is a good platform for him to go ahead in his career," Rajkumar told News18 CricketNext in an exclusive chat at the auction.
Asked if Aryaveer has ever felt the pressure of carrying the Kohli surname, Rajkumar said, 'No, the family has never pressurised him for anything. He is a simple kid and has never tried taking advantage of his uncle's name."
One would imagine that, given Virat has made his name worldwide as a great batter, his nephew would follow in his footsteps. But Aryaveer is a legspinner, and so is Ayush, son of Virat's sister Bhawna, as Rajkumar reveals.
Both Aryaveer and Ayush train at the West Delhi Cricket Academy, where Virat trained under Rajkumar years ago.
'Aryaveer was always a good bowler. Not just him, but Ayush is a legspinner too," Rajkumar said with a grin.
Earlier in the day, South Delhi signed Digvesh Rathi for a whopping Rs 38 lakh, just one mark less than Simarjeet Singh, who was picked by the Central Delhi Kings for Rs 39 lakh.
South Delhi also picked 29-year-old allrounder Kunwar Bidhuri, although he hasn't played professional cricket for the past two years, besides the Delhi Premier League. They also picked wicketkeeper Tejasvi Dahiya, who played in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy for Delhi.
South Delhi will be led by Ayush Badoni, who took them to the finals last year, only to fall three runs short.

Crowdfunding a dream: Bengaluru students build racecar for national event

Bengaluru: Twenty-three engineering students of BR Ambedkar Institute of Technology in the city are racing against time — and budget constraints — to complete their dream project: Building a Formula Student racecar for a national competition next month. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Saranyu Racing Team, part of the college's sports car club, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise the final Rs 3 lakh needed to complete the car. Its poster reads: "Help us build more than a car, help shape the next generation of engineers." The car is being built for the SAE Supra national-level competition, set to take place in Aug at Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida. With an overall budget of Rs 20 lakh, the students have already raised Rs 17 lakh through sponsorships, alumni support, and contributions from the college management. "We knocked on every possible door. Some alumni not only contributed money but also guided us through technical hurdles. But with the bodywork and component procurement still pending, we turned to crowdfunding," said Yashas M, a 2023 graduate and founding member of the club. This is the college's second time at the competition. Last year, Saranyu finished 35th in the internal combustion category and eighth in the business plan event, among 70 teams. It topped the sales presentation and cost evaluation segments, and came second in design reports at FFS India Season 5. The sports car club, founded in 2022, includes students from all engineering streams and semesters, making it a truly multidisciplinary effort. Ten of the 23 members are women. In Bengaluru, student car clubs are serious business, and the city usually has around 10 colleges regularly participating in competitions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In some tier-1 colleges, getting into their clubs is more difficult than cracking their entrance exams. "We're proud that with limited resources, we can compete with teams from IITs," said Hemang Vishwanath Gowda, a second-year electronics and instrumentation student. Priyanka K, a second-year electronics and communication student, will drive the car during the dynamic event at the competition. "The adrenaline rush of hitting the tracks makes all the sleepless nights worth it," she said. College secretary M Mahadeva said: "Our institution believes in empowering students to realise their dreams. This Formula Student car project reflects our commitment to student-led innovation."

From Dev Bhoomi to Khel Bhoomi - Himachal Pradesh's way forward for sporting transformation

Shimla, July 6 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh, revered as Dev Bhoomi for its spiritual heritage and scenic beauty, is now transforming as Khel Bhoomi — a rising land of sporting excellence. A government spokesperson said here today that the state is undergoing a dynamic transformation into a sports powerhouse. The evolution is driven by the government's commitment to developing world-class infrastructure, nurturing young talent, and creating an inclusive sports ecosystem, he said, asserting that Himachal is not only advancing its sporting landscape but also setting an example for other states to follow. At the heart of this change is the construction of a multi-purpose sports complex in Kharedi, Nadaun (Hamirpur district). "With an investment of Rs 65 crore, this facility will include an eight-lane swimming pool, shooting range, wrestling and boxing arenas, kabaddi and yoga centres, along with modern infrastructure for table tennis and badminton. This landmark initiative aims to shape the next generation of sporting talent in the state," he said. "Further boosting infrastructure, the government is setting up a 100-bed sports hostel in Luhnu, Bilaspur, and enhancing facilities at the Rajiv Gandhi Multi-Purpose Stadium in Katasani, Shimla, he added. Indoor stadiums are coming up in Solan, and new sports centres are being developed in Reckong-Peo, Haroli, and Jaisinghpur. Synthetic tracks and field facilities in Hamirpur and Sujanpur are also underway to provide high-performance training environments," he said. Understanding the critical role of nutrition, the state has significantly increased diet allowances for sportspersons, he stated, adding that the primary-level players receive Rs 250 per day during state competitions, while others get Rs 400. "For out-of-state events, allowances go up to Rs 500. Hostel athletes receive Rs 250 per day within the state and Rs 400 outside. So far, Rs 76.98 lakh has been distributed to 421 athletes under this initiative. "To further ease participation, the government covers travel expenses for competitions. Athletes traveling up to 200 km are given AC 3-tier train fare, while longer journeys are supported with economy class air fare. A total of Rs 6.01 lakh has been disbursed to 235 athletes for travel support," he said. In a progressive move, student-athletes competing in state and national events are now marked 'present on special leave' instead of absent, ensuring their academic progress isn't hampered by sports participation, said the spokesperson. Acknowledging sporting achievements, the government has significantly raised rewards and Rs 14.77 crore has been distributed among 21 international medallists, and Rs 44 lakh awarded to other top performers, he informed. Through structured training, financial support, and inclusive policies, Himachal is nurturing talent at every level, he maintained, adding that Himachali athletes are making their presence felt on medal tallies nationwide, reinforcing the state's growing prominence in Indian sports. With a focused and inclusive approach, Himachal Pradesh is not just building facilities — it is building champions, redefining its identity as a progressive and dynamic centre of sporting excellence, claimed the spokesperson.
