Westminster's Troche and Aquinas' Andres are the Broward Water Polo Players of the Year
On the girls' side, St. Thomas Aquinas' Riley Andres has earned plenty of accolades during her first three years playing the sport at the high school level.
This season, Troche and Andres each took their respective games to higher levels and elevated their teams in the process.
As a result, Troche and Andres are the Miami Herald's Broward County Water Polo Players of the Year.
Troche transferred to Westminster Academy from Cooper City and joined a team that was already loaded with talent.
But Troche helped the Lions take things to a higher level and led them to their first-ever state championship.
Trohe finished the season with 88 goals, 56 assists and 43 steals while helping Westminster Academy earn the top ranking in the state. The Lions then backed up that rating by securing two hard-fought wins at state by one goal over Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas and Mater Lakes.
'It's amazing. We knew we'd be a high-contesting team from the start. But from the way this team put it together, it's just amazing,' Troche said after the Lions won the state title in late April. 'We put our faith in God and kept pushing and pushing until the final buzzer. If you keep going, anything is possible.'
Andres began playing water polo four and a half years ago and quickly showed her talent in the pool.
This season, she became even more of a prolific scorer for the Aquinas girls team, scoring 175 goals and had 54 steals on defense to help the Raiders advance to the regional finals.
'I play this sport because I love the water, and I love winning,' Andres said. 'I swam competitively for nine years and later realized that wasn't really what I wanted to do. I have a great view of the pool and a strong shot and I worked hard.'

Kerby Joseph lands in top 75 of NFL Players list
As the NFL continues its unveiling of the Top 100 Players of 2025, one of the best safeties in the league had his name revealed Friday. Lions safety Kerby Joseph, who is already getting accolades as one of the best safeties by media, coaches and scouts, earned his flowers from his peers, appearing on the list at No. 71. Joseph, who signed a four-year, $86 million contract extension this offseason, led the league with nine interceptions in 2024, earning All-Pro honors. The contract extension made him the highest-paid safety in the NFL, based on the average value of his extension at $21.5 million. The previous high was $21.025 million per year for Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. Joseph was not ranked in the top 100 last season. He is the second Lion to appear on the list. Tight end Sam LaPorta came in at No. 94. Joseph is also the second safety revealed thus far. At No. 92 was Atlanta Falcons safety Jessie Bates.

Confident Furlong wants first Lions series win
Tadhg Furlong has been there, done that and bought the T-shirt. The veteran prop was making his seventh test match start for the Lions and any doubts, anyone had, if he was worthy of his place after two seasons of stop-start rugby for Leinster and Ireland because of niggling injuries were dispelled as he produced a performance to match any in his stellar career. In 2017 Furlong was a member of the Lions squad that lost the first test in New Zealand but came back to win the second and tie the third. Four years later in South Africa, the Lions went 1-nil up before losing the series as the Springboks came roaring back. Furlong has experienced the physical and mental struggles of being ahead and behind in a three-match series and heading into the second test in Melbourne, he's unlikely to hop on an emotional rollercoaster. "There's two sides of the coin," explained Furlong. "Obviously it's on us that we don't get complacent and we learn the lessons. "We have a midweek game again. It's great to see the boys go out and see who puts their hands up. If the lads go well on Tuesday then it will put them in contention. "The other side of that is we know what it means to the Aussies. "The desperation is all in there for them next weekend. "Every series is different but some things remain the same no matter what. "There is a flow to it. The group is edgy. We don't know each other, we don't know the Australians and they don't know us and what it's actually like on the pitch. "You watch all the video. You do all your prep. "There's a realisation after that of what it takes and what it felt like in the game." Furlong was feeling so good on Saturday night that at one stage he threw a 20 metre pass with unerring accuracy, not always a props greatest strength. "A floaty one, he admitted. "I thought it was good. I know it was on penalty advantage but your confidence is there. "It was that kind of game where I was attacking well and getting through a few carries." On his third tour, Furlong has never missed a test match, all that's missing is being part of a series win. He'll get that chance in Melbourne on Saturday.

Gregor Brown called up to Lions tour over concerns of the fitness of lock Joe McCarthy
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Scotland second rower Gregor Brown has been called up to the British and Irish Lions' tour of Australia because of concerns over the fitness of lock Joe McCarthy. Brown was to join Andy Farrell's squad in Melbourne on Sunday to provide cover for Tuesday's final midweek match against a First Nations and Pasifika XV. McCarthy left the field in the 44th minute of Saturday's 27-19 victory over the Wallabies because of a foot issue that makes him in doubt for the Lions' attempt at clinching the three-test series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday. 'It was niggling away at Joe. We got him off. Hopefully we got him off in time,' said head coach Farrell, who revealed that the Ireland player also has heel pain due to plantar fasciitis. Brown joins Rory Sutherland and Ewan Ashman in leaving Scotland's tour of New Zealand to link up with the Lions. All three of them started Friday's 41-12 victory over Samoa in Auckland.
