NFL teams told Quinn Ewers he's 'too big of a name to be a clipboard holder,' per agent
It wasn't a huge surprise that quarterback Quinn Ewers had to wait until the final day of the 2024 NFL draft to hear his name called. But the seventh round was much later than most, including Ewers, anticipated.
"It was very unexpected, and I think that the toughest part about it is just the amount of unexpected occurrences there were," Ewers told ESPN's Todd Archer last week. "But I'm glad that I ended up where I ended up. To go as late as I did, I'm glad it's a good spot."
So why did the former No. 1 high school recruit have to wait until No. 231 overall before the Miami Dolphins gave him call? According to his agent, Ron Slavin, his client's fame may have played a part. Via Archer:
The day after the draft, Slavin said he reached out to "half the league" to find out what happened.
"They thought he was a third- or fourth-round pick, but too big of a name to be a clipboard holder," Slavin said. "Which I think is chickens---."
Ewers landed in the fourth round in most mock drafts, per NFL Mock Draft Database, and the quarterback was even hopeful that Round 2 would be a possibility. But in the days after the draft, the former Texas passer has said he couldn't be happier with his landing spot.
"[At Texas], we run a lot of stuff that Miami does," Ewers told reporters shortly after he was picked. "I'm excited to go into this facility, this franchise and learn kind of how they do it because I know we see it on film and we're like, OK, it looks like this is the first read, but I want to go see to the furthest extent how they teach that sort of stuff."
Ewers finished his collegiate career with a 27-9 record as a starter with 9,128 passing yards, 68 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions.

Riley Gaines clashes with Keith Olbermann after UPenn strips Lia Thomas of program records

Riley Gaines and Keith Olbermann were at it again on social media this week after the ex-ESPN host took aim at the former University of Kentucky swimmer following the resolution agreement between the University of Pennsylvania and the Education Department that resulted in the school stripping program records previously held by transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. Olbermann posted a message on X on Tuesday calling Gaines "whiny" in response to the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announcement that it had reached an agreement with UPenn following its investigation into Title IX violations that centered on Thomas' participation on the women's swimming team during the 2021-22 season. "Wanted to congratulate Whiny Gaines on now being able to say she finished tied for FOURTH not tied for FIFTH in the Lia Thomas race," Olbermann wrote in his post, referencing the 2022 NCAA Division I swimming championships when Gaines tied with Thomas for fifth place in the 200 free. Gaines, the host of OutKick's "Gaines for Girls" podcast and a 12-time NCAA All-American swimmer, responded promptly to Olbermann's slight and reminded the ex-ESPN host that Thomas ranked lower in the men's competition before transitioning to the women's team. "Thank you! And while you're keeping track, make sure to congratulate Emma Weyant, the right National Champ in the 500 freestyle, too," Gaines said, referring to Thomas' title in the 2022 championships. Gaines continued, "(If you're insinuating 5th in the nation is bad, what do you call a man who ranks 462nd nationally in the men's category?)" Thomas became the first openly transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I title. During competition, Thomas set multiple individual program records. On Tuesday, UPenn announced that a trio of records set by Thomas that season would be updated to reflect the female competitor's records. A note on the school's website, however, still recognized Thomas' records based on the NCAA's eligibility requirements at the time. "NOTE: Competing under eligibility rules in effect at the time, Lia Thomas set program records in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle during the 2021-22 season," the annotation read. Earlier this year, in compliance with President Donald Trump's executive order, the NCAA announced it was updating its gender eligibility policies to ban all biological males from competing in women's competition. In UPenn's statement on Tuesday, Penn President J. Larry Jameson said the university plans to "fully comply" with Title IX and the NCAA's current policies. "The University will not – on the basis of sex – exclude female students from participation in, deny female students the benefits of, or subject female students to discrimination under, any athletics programs. In addition, in providing to female student-athletes intimate facilities such as locker rooms and bathrooms in connection with Penn Athletics, such facilities shall be strictly separated on the basis of sex and comparably provided to each sex," the school wrote. Cowboys Source Issues Three-Word Truth On Diggs Rumors

Cowboys Source Issues Three-Word Truth On Diggs Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - We've done the analysis. When it comes to Trevon Diggs' time with the Dallas Cowboys, there are three options being thrown out there. Advertisement Trade him. Cut him. Hope for him. We will concede that the 51st overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft has been a success story in many ways here ... it's been a while since the playmaking Diggs has lived up to expectations. That is mostly due to the fact that he has sustained back-to-back season-ending injuries to that troublesome left knee ... and some people here inside The Star also think it's due to a previous lack of intensity when it came to his rehab. But ... He is a two-time Pro Bowler and was a First-Team All-Pro in 2021 ... at a time that was pre-injury and a time loaded with his record-setting ability to grab interceptions. Advertisement Can that all happen again? As we have illustrated here, the Cowboys can "escape hatch'' their way out of his contract in a reasonably affordable way after the completion of the 2025 NFL season. Do it next offseason and they save about $12.5 million while they carry a dead cap hit of just under $6 million in 2026. Or, better yet, they could designate him a post-June 1 release, saving $15.5 million and then can spread the dead cap of $6 mil over the 2026 and 2027 seasons at a little under $3 mil per year. Trade? If Diggs' injuries keep him from returning to the field at some early stage this year (Trevon has targeted Week 1 for his comeback, unrealistic as that sounds), and if the rehab prevents him from returning to form in 2025 ... Advertisement Why would anybody want to trade for him? That leaves ... "hope'' ... and indeed, internet memes aside, "hope'' is pretty much the plan.'' So, a source tells "We will wait.'' Wait on the rehab. Wait on cutting him. Wait on panicking. Wait. Hope. The fact that fellow DaRon Bland is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025 plays into this; maybe Dallas simply transfers its investment from Diggs to Bland. The possible play of rookie Shavon Revel (also rehabbing) is a factor, too. If he becomes a starting-caliber corner, Diggs' importance here shrinks. But that's for later. For now?
