Historic moment as South African port hosts the largest-ever container ship
The MSC Rifaya, the largest container ship to dock in South Africa, made an unscheduled stop at Durban port
Measuring nearly 400m in length and weighing over 200,000 metric tonnes, this vessel has a capacity exceeding 19,400 TEUs.
This event demonstrates the world-class infrastructure and emergency handling capabilities of the Port of Durban.
The ultra-large container vessel (ULCV) arrived at Durban port, South Africa on Monday, June 9, making an unscheduled stop for emergency repairs after sailing in from Ashdod, Israel.
The MSC Rifaya, a ship measuring nearly 400 meters in length and weighing over 200,000 metric tonnes, is classified among the world's largest container vessels.
With a reported capacity of 19,437 to 19,466 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), it has surpassed all previous records set by container vessels entering South African waters.
The berthing of the massive vessel was a complex operation that involved four harbour tugs. Port officials confirmed that the Rifaya will remain at the port until at least Thursday, June 13, before continuing its journey to Singapore.
According to Nkumbuzi Ben-Mazwi, Acting Port Manager at the Port of Durban, the successful docking, despite being unscheduled, demonstrates not only the port's world-class infrastructure but also its flexibility and readiness to handle emergency berthings.
He described the event as evidence that South Africa possesses the maritime expertise required to operate at a global standard. Ben-Mazwi further praised the teamwork of marine pilots, tug masters, and engineers who coordinated the berthing process with precision.
Key personnel involved in the operation included MSC South Africa's Operations Director, Captain Ian Rosario, and Transnet National Ports Authority's Harbour Master, Captain Brynn Adamson.
The vessel was piloted into the port by Captain Ian Waddell, assisted by senior marine pilots Captain Mathilda Lekala and Captain Thokozani Mthethwa.
Shipping milestone for SA's Durban port
The arrival of the MSC Rifaya is being celebrated as a milestone for the country's maritime sector.
Port authorities and shipping stakeholders say the successful handling of the vessel places the Port of Durban in a stronger position to compete with major global ports such as Singapore, Rotterdam, and Shanghai. It also boosts the port's reputation as a key gateway for regional and international trade.
The event comes at a time when Transnet and South Africa's shipping sector are under pressure to improve logistics efficiency. The ability to berth and service vessels of this magnitude, especially on short notice, is being viewed as a positive indicator that the country can handle the growing demands of global commerce.

South Africa's vehicle exports to U.S. plunge over 80% amid Trump trade clampdown
South Africa's vehicle exports to the United States have plummeted in 2025, with sharp declines in April and May. South Africa's vehicle exports to the United States dropped significantly in 2025 due to new U.S. import tariffs. The decline threatens South African automotive jobs and industrial hubs dependent on exports. The U.S., previously a major trade partner under AGOA, escalated tariffs, impacting trade volume severely. South Africa's vehicle exports to the United States have plummeted in 2025, with sharp declines in April and May following the introduction of steep import tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump. According to industry body naamsa, the drop poses a serious threat to jobs and industrial hubs that depend on the sector. The U.S., South Africa's second-largest trading partner and a key destination for domestically manufactured vehicles, has historically offered duty-free access through the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). That preferential access is now being eroded by Trump's escalating trade measures, Reuters reported. Auto exports to the U.S. fell by 73% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period a year earlier. The situation worsened in April and May, with declines of 80% and 85%, respectively, naamsa said. Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa, warns of widespread disruption across South Africa's automotive value chain. Tariffs hike The dramatic fall in exports comes after Trump imposed a 25% tariff on South African vehicles in April, which was later expanded in May to cover automotive components. Earlier this month, the White House announced a broader wave of new tariffs on more than a dozen countries, including South Africa, which now faces a 30% tariff on all vehicle imports starting August 1. Before this latest tariff escalation, South Africa had attempted to negotiate a new trade arrangement with the U.S., proposing a duty-free quota of 40,000 vehicles per year and continued tariff-free access for South African-made auto parts used in U.S. manufacturing. Jobs and investment at risk The automotive sector is one of the largest beneficiaries of AGOA, accounting for 64% of South Africa's total AGOA trade with the U.S. in 2024. It generated 28.6 billion rand ($1.6 billion) in export revenue that year, naamsa said. The fallout is already being felt in regions like East London, a coastal manufacturing hub where auto production is central to the local economy. Automakers reassess operations Automakers with a strong South African presence, such as Mercedes-Benz, which exports from South Africa to the U.S., may be forced to absorb rising costs, scale back production, or reconsider future investments, Mabasa warned.

Grok chatbot mirrored X users' ‘extremist views' in antisemitic posts, xAI says
SAN FRANCISCO — Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, said that its Grok chatbot relied too heavily on input from users of his social media platform X after a code update, causing it to share a series of antisemitic comments Tuesday. At the time, the chatbot praised Adolf Hitler, suggested that people with Jewish surnames were more likely to spread online hate and said a Holocaust-like response to hatred against white people would be 'effective.' It also referred to itself as 'MechaHitler' and posted sexually explicit commentary. X deleted some of the posts Tuesday evening. Early Saturday, xAI said in a statement on its X account that 'we deeply apologize for the horrific behavior that many experienced.' It added that 'deprecated code made @grok susceptible to existing X user posts; including when such posts contained extremist views.' The AI startup said the problems began with a code update Monday that restored an older set of instructions that the company had used to guide Grok. Grok's X account used these instructions to respond to queries from X users. The issues continued until the account was temporarily disabled Tuesday. The outdated set of instructions told the chatbot to be 'maximally based,' slang that refers to being true to oneself and has been adopted by the far right in recent years for comments that go against 'woke' or mainstream narratives. The instructions also told Grok to be unafraid 'to offend people who are politically correct' and to understand the 'tone, context and language' of X users' posts and mimic it. This led Grok to mirror X users too closely, xAI said in its statement. The company has taken to X before to explain errant behavior by Grok. In May, xAI said an 'unauthorized modification' by an employee had caused its chatbot to repeatedly bring up South African politics in unrelated conversations and falsely insist that the country was engaging in 'genocide' against white citizens. On Wednesday, Musk unveiled the latest version of Grok, called Grok 4, in a livestream on X. The livestream, which began an hour later than scheduled, demonstrated the chatbot's ability to solve complex problems and respond to voice commands. It ended after an employee onstage with Musk declared, 'It's a good model, sir.' The Financial Times reported Friday that xAI, which Musk merged with X in March, was trying to raise money in a deal that would value the company at $200 billion. Musk denied the report, saying on X that xAI 'has plenty of capital.' The New York Times reported in May that the privately held company was in talks to raise new financing that could value it at as much as $120 billion.
