'False Alarm?': AIFF Faked Xavi's Head Coach Application To Boost Profile, Claim Reports

Last Updated: Sources close to the Barcelona legend claimed that the Spaniard never applied for the job and opined that the AIFF used his name to increase the appeal around the vacancy. A day after news circulated that decorated former Spanish midfielder Xavi had tossed his name in the hat for the vacant role at the helm of the Indian national football team, sources close to the World Cup winner claim that the All Indian Football Federation misused the legend's name in order to boost the profile of the job. Indian football has been in the doldrums, and the AIFF opened applications for the role of the head coach following the departure of Manolo Marquez. Sources close to the Barcelona legend claimed that the Spaniard never applied for the job and opined that the AIFF used his name to increase the appeal around the vacancy. Multiple big names, including the likes of Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, Stephen Constantine, Steve Kean, Khalid Jamil, Kibu Vicuna and Eelco Schattorie have expressed interest in taking over the mantle of the Blue Tigers, but AIFF reportedly cooked up Xavi's application. A member of the technical committee further went on to claim that despite the maestro's interest, the AIFF felt that the cost of hiring a global superstar would be too high considering the budget of the federation. The Barca faithful, Xavi was head coach at Al Sadd before taking over at Barcelona four years ago and led the Blaugrana to the La Liga title in his debut season as the head coach of his boyhood club. view comments First Published: July 26, 2025, 07:45 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. China Open: Sat-Chi advance to semis, Unnati out in QFs

CHENNAI: Ace Indian men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty punched theirticket to the semifinals but up-and-coming badminton star Unnati Hooda's dream run ended at the China Open Super 1000 on Friday. The reigning Asian Games champions picked a comfortable 21-18, 21-14 win over familiar foes Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi of Malaysia in 40 minutes. They will take on the world number two pair of Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia in the last four stage. This would be their third semi-final appearance, and second against the World number two pair. They lost to them in the Singapore open in May this year. 'There have been tournaments where we have not done so well, be it the Singapore Open, where we felt winning one game would be great, but we ended up in the semis which exceeded our expectations,' Chirag said. Previously, the duo stumbled at the pre-quarterfinal stage. The familiarity of the opponents helped them plan their game. 'In the first set we felt no matter what we had to be fast against them and get on the attack as much as possible. In the second set, we knew they couldn't (continue to) play fast, so we focused on the front end. We also ensured that they don't get creative on the net and not give them chances so we attacked their services,' Satwik said.

Khalid Jamil emerges as frontrunner for Indian football team coach role

Khalid Jamil has emerged as a frontrunner to take up the vacant Indian men's football team coach role, according to a report from PTI. Jamil, who has been known for his work with limited resources in the I-League and the Indian Super League, is amongst the three candidates who have been shortlisted by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) along with former India coach Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic. advertisementThe AIFF went through close to 170 applications, which included the likes of Xavi, Robbie Fowler and Harry Kewell. The news about Xavi's application came to light on July 24 as AIFF appreciated the interest from the Spaniard, but decided not to proceed with it given the costs involved with the operation to bring the former Barcelona manager on board. However, PTI is stating that amongst the three who have been shortlisted, Jamil appears to be the favourite to land the job. The AIFF have resisted the tendency to hand over the reigns to an Indian coach at a crossroads moment but the current Jamshedpur FC coach seems to be edging ahead. Why Jamil could be the people's choice Jamil's work with Indian football has been incredible. After representing India in 40 international matches, the former midfielder started his career as a coach with Mumbai in 2009. However, it was with Aizawl FC that he came into the limelight. Given the limited resources at his disposal, Jamil guided them into the I-League from the second division and helped them win the title in their first season. After stints with East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, Jamil once again came into the limelight for guiding Northeast United to the semi-finals of the ISL in the 2021-22 season. He then went on to repeat the feat with Jamshedpur FC. AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey confirmed on July 24 that an announcement about the new Indian coach will be in 10 days. "I think 10 days from now, if all goes smoothly.""We will hold executive committee meeting and thereafter the name of the head coach will be announced," Chaubey executive committee meeting will be key to decide if Jamil becomes the new India coach. - Ends
