Bulova Documentary Puts a Spotlight on Brand's Backing of Veterans, Women's Rights and Other Social Initiatives
Speaking following Variety and Golden Globes' screening of Michael Culyba's documentary 'America Telling Time: 150 Years of Bulova' presented by Bulova, Benavente told an audience on Sunday at the Cannes Film Festival that the sequence that made the most emotional impact on him and other audience members he'd chatted with was the one featuring the work done with the Veterans Watchmaker Initiative, which the company supports.

The non-profit runs a tuition-free school that allows disabled veterans to learn watchmaking skills and offers them a dedicated job placement. In the film, veterans, some of whom had been homeless, explained how it had restored their sense of self-worth, as well as giving them a means to earn a living, despite their physical or mental challenges. For some it had literally been a life saver, as they had been contemplating suicide.
Benavente explained that the Veterans Watchmaker Initiative was set up by Sam Cannan, who was a sniper for a SWAT team in Baltimore.
'He got shot off a three-story building while there was an active shooter, and he fell, and by the grace of God, there was an awning that broke his fall. But immediately he was disabled from the Baltimore Police Department,' Benavente explained. After attending the Joseph Bulova School of Watchmaking, Cannan went on to 'have a very illustrious career as a watchmaker. He goes to live in Switzerland for many years, and this project that you saw today is really a work of love for him to give back, because he was in the same place as these guys. So you can see he's very emotional and he's super passionate about it and he's a great guy, and so we're just happy to be able to be with him and support,' Benavente said.
Among other not-for-profit initiatives the company supports that are covered in the film are the Latin Grammys; the Maestro Cares Foundation, co-founded by singer Marc Anthony; and the We Are Family Foundation, which was co-founded by singer-songwriter Nile Rodgers. Both Anthony and Rodgers are brand ambassadors for Bulova, have designed watches for the company, and feature prominently in the film. Anthony's wife Nadia Ferreira, the Paraguayan model and social influencer, also attended the Cannes screening.
The film is broken into themed chapters, rather than following a series of milestones chronologically, and the one that stood out for Culyba was Bulova's impact on women's rights. In the 1970s, for example, the company ran a series of groundbreaking ads in support of equal pay for women.
'I would say that was another exciting part of discovery while I was making the film,' Culyba said. 'I wasn't necessarily aware of their advertising campaign for the Equal Rights Amendment, and that ad is so brave and bold of a company at that time to really take a social and political stand.
'At the time, Bulava really embraced women's rights, and it's a message that I think a lot of people, a lot of women, obviously, and men, can feel still today, through the brand it, it's still there.'

"I'm Illegal": Lindsay Lohan Seemingly Had To Blurt Out That She Was Underage So Anthony Anderson Would Stop Making Sexual Comments Toward Her, But It Didn't Work

A resurfaced clip of Anthony Anderson interviewing Lindsay Lohan is receiving a ton of backlash for the sexually-charged comments and questions he made to her at such a young age. In December 2003, Anthony acted as a guest host on The Sharon Osbourne Show. During the episode, Lindsay stopped by to promote the release of Freaky Friday landing on DVD and VHS, for fans' viewing pleasure. For those of you who aren't old enough to know what those are, before streaming revolutionized the way we watched movies and television, the only way to watch feature films or series at home was to use a disc (DVD) or tape (VHS). While Anthony's intention might've been playful, the constant sexual innuendos and suggestive language were a little hard to watch, especially since he was 33 at the time, and Lindsay was only 17. And it began as soon as she walked onto the stage. Related: When she came out, he initially greeted her with a polite kiss on the cheek, but as they sat down, he followed up the moment by saying, "You're sick and you just kissed me on the lips with tongue?" To which Lindsay immediately replies, "I didn't kiss you on the lips!" He later told her, "My children and I loved you in The Parent Trap." Lindsay, who was grateful for the compliment, thanked him for being a fan of her work. But the sweet moment turned awkward when he placed his hand on her knee and added, "You've grown up a whole lot since then." Lindsay was visibly shocked by the comment, but laughed it off with the audience. Later in the conversation, Lindsay revealed she and fellow child star Raven-Symoné just "got a place together." Anthony asked if they had issues with decorating, but Lindsay confirmed they hadn't because they had completely different styles, adding that Lindsay's room was completely pink, while Raven's room had darker colors. Probably already prepped on Lindsay's love for the color pink, Anthony gifted her pink pillow with his face on it that read, "To Lindsay, Love Anthony." "This is going to go right on my bed, and when I see you, I will say hi, cuz I'll see your face every night," Lindsay joked after they both exchanged stories of celebrities ignoring them after they tried to say hi to them. "No one," Lindsay said. "I don't have a boyfriend." Anthony then announced to the audience, " single and looking!" But Lindsay quickly reacted by pointing out, "But I'm illegal for people that are old." "Well, some men like 'em young, we ain't gonna mention no names, but, you know. I'm one of 'em." "You have a family man!" said Lindsay, who appeared to look at the audience for backup. She shook her head as she turned back around to look at Anthony, who was still cracking up at his own joke. After the odd exchange, and only a minute left of the interview, Anthony finally asked a work-related question. Lindsay shared she had two movies coming out and those would end up being big hits as well — none other than Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and Mean Girls. He ultimately promoted the Freaky Friday DVD, revealing that everyone in the audience would be receiving one. Despite her getting excited about mentions of the release, by the end, she seemed a little relieved to be done with the interview. As the camera zoomed out, Anthony yelled, "Right now, we're about to get our freak on," as he pulled Lindsay in for an awkward hug. The clip has since gone viral online. It most likely made its way to 2025 due to the upcoming release of the Freaky Friday sequel, Freakier Friday. Outside of the obvious, backlash for the clip arose due to Anthony's checkered past, which includes several sexual assault allegations. The first one emerged in 2004 when Anthony and Hustle & Flow assistant director Wayne Witherspoon were accused of raping a 25-year-old extra on the set of the film. A woman claimed to have heard screaming, followed by a naked woman running from a trailer. She was later treated at St. Francis Hospital. The Daily Beast reported that Anthony was charged with aggravated rape, but released on a $20K bond. He denies the allegations. A spokesperson for Anthony said in a statement: 'Anthony is a happily married family man who has never been accused of – no less involved in – anything remotely like this, and we are confident that when all the facts come out, he will be completely exonerated.' A Memphis judge threw out the case, deeming it 'the most suspicious case I've ever heard.' Anthony has never been convicted of any of the crimes brought up against him. Is Happy Gilmore 2 worth watching? Critics deliver verdict on Adam Sandler sequel
Adam Sandler's anger-prone golfer returns to the green - but is Happy Gilmore 2 worth spending your precious free telly time on? Adam Sandler dusts off his clubs for Happy Gilmore 2 after a nearly 30-year break. The film officially hits Netflix today but with so much content vying for your attention, is this highly anticipated comedy sequel worth spending your precious free telly time on? Picking up in real-time after the events of 1996's first film, Happy Gilmore 2 finds its titular hero in need of money once more — and a bit of a pick-me-up. Last time we saw Happy, he entered the prestigious PGA Tour in order to bag the prize money and save his poor grandma's house from being repossessed. This time, he's washed up and willing to do anything to secure the funds needed to send his daughter to a swanky Parisian ballet school. Cue a return to the links and plenty of Sandler-esque tomfoolery. That's the elevator pitch, but is Happy Gilmore 2 actually any good? Well, reviews for the sequel have started to make their way online, each painting a picture of its worthiness. For the most part, many outlets seem to be aware of the movie's flaws but remain insistent that fans will love it regardless. Over on The Hollywood Reporter, their write-up said: 'Like the first film, the sequel (directed by Kyle Newacheck) proves moronic, witless and relentlessly vulgar. Which is to say, Happy Gilmore fans will love it.' Their review continued, suggesting viewers may need a "cheat sheet" to fully appreciate its throng of guest star cameos. In case you missed it, the movie features guest appearances from sports stars like Travis Kelce, to musicians like Eminem and Bad Bunny. Speaking of which, the outlet happily admitted that the latter was a particularly fun watch. 'Surprisingly, Bad Bunny turns out to be utterly endearing, and very funny, as a busboy whom Happy hires as his caddie." Critic Frank Scheck adds: 'Although it's unlikely that anyone had the Puerto Rican superstar slathering a bare-chested Travis Kelce with honey, as he does here, on their cinematic bingo card.' Variety echoed the film's dedication to giving fans exactly what they want to see. Their critique called Sandler's sequel "a happy orgy of raucously well-executed Adam Sandler fan service" and a "pointed exercise in nostalgia" complete with a "present-tense edge." For all those reading this who recently found themselves wondering where all the big stupid comedies have gone, Variety's critic Owen Gleiberman thinks Happy Gilmore 2 could answer that question. "It takes us back to a time when idiot comedy was really built," suggested the critic, adding that the film feels like "the 30-year high-school reunion" of its predecessor. Meanwhile, IndieWire believes that Sandler and original Happy Gilmore scribe Tim Herlihy (who returned to pen part 2) bring nostalgia to a new place. To illustrate their point, they call upon the movie's opening sequence. We won't spoil it here but needless to say, it uses raw emotion to reintroduce us to Happy at a time where he's anything but. "There's something impressive about Sandler and Tim Herlihy's script using that as a jumping-off point," says Kate Erbland's review of this heart-wrenching moment. They also commended the film's recognition of those who starred in the original but who are sadly no longer with us. "That's all baked in, and while not always successfully (three of those characters are ultimately revisited by way of the use of on-screen sons, who provide tenuous fill-in work), there's something to be said for how the film doesn't look away from those implications," explained the critic. "Time has marched on, and not everyone has continued on that walk." This thought was mirrored over on The AV Club, who discussed the film's handling of perhaps its biggest missing character: Happy's golfing guide Chubbs, played by the late Carl Weathers. Jesse Hassenger's review said the film acts "as an ongoing memorial to the many Gilmore cast members who have passed away since 1996, including Carl Weathers (whose Chubbs was already dead, but surely would have popped up for a ghostly consultation)." Overall, Hassenger thought that while Happy Gilmore 2 may not be far-and-away better than its predecessor, it's at least on par with it. "Happy Gilmore 2 doesn't stand on its own enough to rate alongside the company's best work for the streamer," they explained. Quickly adding that "the sequel is another indication that Sandler is still undertaking his longtime mission of making silly comfort-food comedies with the stealth seriousness of older age." Of course, it's important to note that these reviews are just the opinions of a select few. An official critical score is yet to hit movie aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. However, at the time of writing, the comedy follow-up is currently sitting sweet with an audience rating of 67%. Clearly, most viewers seem to be glad that Happy is back at long last.
