Harveer was wanted in connection with a cheating case registered at Paras Pur police station in Gonda under BNS Sections 420, 467, 468, 471, 504, 506, and 406. Harveer, originally from Basarke village in Tarn Taran district of Punjab, had been absconding after duping Gonda resident Sunil Kumar Dwivedi of Rs 50 lakh in 2021. Dwivedi's troubles began when he met Chandan Dixit, a co-accused from Chitrakoot, who introduced him to Harveer and Madan Gupta. They convinced Dwivedi to invest in a mining contract in Fatehpur, showcasing forged documents of a mining lease and promising a 10% partnership and substantial profits. 2 held for Rs10.7cr GST evasion via fake firms

Lucknow: In a crackdown on tax fraud, Sadar Kotwali police in Rae Bareli on Monday evening arrested two members of an organised money laundering syndicate involved in GST evasion of Rs 10.76 crore through fake firms and bogus invoicing. The accused — Yogesh Garg alias Monu of Ghaziabad and Sanjay Thakur of Lucknow — were nabbed while they were going to meet a lawyer in connection with the case. Both were wanted in connection with a fake GST firm registered as Sarvashri Rajdhani Enterprises in Rae Bareli. Police said that the company was created using forged documents and SIM cards linked to previously surrendered GST accounts. Yogesh admitted that his identification documents were used to register the bogus firm, in return for a share of the fake GST refund proceeds. He told police that he worked under Sanjay Thakur, who in turn claimed to be part of a larger network operated by one Naresh Rana. The gang allegedly generated fake invoices for non-existent goods to falsely claim input tax credits (ITC) at 18% GST. These credits were then passed on to partner firms enabling the fraudulent transfer of Rs 10.76 crore in ITC after showing fictitious transactions of Rs 57.35 crore. A complaint was filed by Ramesh Chandra of Satyanagar, whose Aadhaar and mobile number were misused to set up the bogus entity though he had surrendered his GST account two years ago.

Cybercrime cell warns pensioners of life cert scam

Lucknow: The cybercrime cell has issued an urgent public advisory warning pension holders against a rising wave of sophisticated cyber fraud targeting retirees under the guise of updating the Jeevan Pramaan Patra (life certificate). According to officials, cybercriminals are now exploiting sensitive personal data of pensioners — including date of appointment, retirement date, PPO number (pension payment order), Aadhaar number, permanent address, email ID, retirement benefits, monthly pension and nominee details — to convincingly impersonate representatives of the pension directorate. "These fraudsters contact pensioners and pose as govt officials," the advisory said adding that "They cite accurate personal details to build trust, then urge the pensioner to share a one-time password (OTP) sent to their phone, claiming it is required to update the Jeevan Pramaan Patra online." However, once the OTP is shared, the cybercriminals gain full access to the pensioner's bank account, enabling them to siphon off the entire balance, which is then routed to fake accounts or digital wallets. The cybercrime cell clarified that the pension directorate never calls pensioners to update their life certificates online, nor does it collect sensitive data over the phone. Updating the Jeevan Pramaan Patra is a personal responsibility and must be done in person through authorised centres. Authorities urge all pensioners and their families to remain vigilant, never share OTPs or bank details over the phone, and immediately report any suspicious activity to the cybercrime cell, Hazratganj, or their nearest police station.
