Malayalam Rapper Vedan booked for rape after doctor's complaint
KOCHI: Malayalam rap singer Hirandas Murali, popularly known as Vedan, has landed in fresh controversy after a young doctor filed a rape complaint against him. The Thrikkakara police on Wednesday registered a case against the 30-year-old singer, a native of Thrissur. According to the police, the complainant befriended Vedan through Instagram in 2021. Later that year, he allegedly visited her residence and sexually assaulted her. When she considered approaching the police, Vedan reportedly promised to marry her, following which he continued to sexually abuse her without consent. In her complaint, the woman alleged that she was raped on five occasions. Since 2023, the accused allegedly began to distance himself from her, which pushed the victim into emotional trauma. Police said she recently gained the courage to come forward with the complaint. A detailed statement will be recorded soon, and the police will also move court to record her confidential statement. Meanwhile, Vedan has denied the allegations, claiming that the complaint is part of a conspiracy against him. He said he has evidence to support his claims and will soon approach the court seeking anticipatory bail. This is not the first time the rapper has faced legal trouble. Another young woman had raised similar sexual assault complaint against him. He was also arrested in cases under NDPS Act and Wildlife Protection Act for possession of ganja and for wearing a leopard tooth, respectively.

Rape Case Filed Against Malayalam Rapper Hirandas Murali By Doctor
Kochi: Malayalam rapper and songwriter Hirandas Murali, popularly known as Vedan, has been booked for rape following a complaint lodged by a doctor. The complaint alleges that Vedan sexually abused her repeatedly between August 2021 and March 2023 under the false promise of marriage. The Thrikkakara police in Ernakulam, Kerala, registered the case on Wednesday night after the petitioner approached the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kochi City) and gave her statement. Kochi police commissioner told NDTV they are verifying details of the complaint and the rapper has not been questioned or arrested yet. The incidents leading to the complaint took place a few years ago, and the case was registered after Thrikkakara was mentioned as one of the locations where the alleged abuse occurred. The complainant has said she had met the celebrity rapper as a fan and later a relationship developed between them. This is not the first time Vedan has faced sexual abuse allegations; similar claims surfaced during the MeToo movement but no police case was filed. A case of multiple sexual assaults against the same person has been filed under relevant sections of the IPC since the incident happened before Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) came into effect. Controversy is not new to Vedan. On April 28, 2025, he was arrested by Hill Palace police in Kochi along with eight others for alleged possession of six grams of ganja from his apartment. While he was released on bail in that case, he was subsequently arrested by the Forest Department for possessing a leopard-tooth pendant, a non-bailable offense under the Wildlife Protection Act, that he claimed was a gift from a fan. He was later granted bail in that case too. In May 2025, a BJP leader in Kerala filed a complaint against Vedan, accusing him of defaming Prime Minister Narendra Modi and promoting caste division through his lyrics.

Bat Meat In Your 'Chicken' Biryani? Shocking Food Scam Busted In Tamil Nadu, 2 Held
Two men in Tamil Nadu were caught hunting fruit bats and selling the meat as chicken. The illegal trade was busted by forest officials during a raid in Salem district In a disturbing case that has raised serious concerns over food safety and wildlife protection, two men were arrested for hunting fruit bats and selling their meat disguised as chicken at roadside eateries in Tamil Nadu's Salem district. The incident came to light after the Forest Department raided the Thoppur Ramasamy forest area on the night of July 25, acting on local reports of gunshots in the region. During the raid, forest officials caught the suspects red-handed while they were preparing bat meat by boiling it at the site. Upon interrogation, the accused confessed to selling the meat as chilli chicken and other popular dishes at fast-food stalls in the Danishpettai area of Omalur. Officials confirmed that unsuspecting customers were consuming the bat meat believing it to be chicken. Experts have flagged this practice as a major public health risk. Fruit bats are known carriers of life-threatening viruses, including Nipah, Ebola, Marburg, and Rabies. Consuming undercooked or contaminated bat meat can lead to severe disease outbreaks. A similar case in Congo earlier this year reportedly led to the deaths of over 50 people after the consumption of infected bat meat. This is not the first such incident in India. In recent years, authorities have uncovered multiple cases of wildlife meat being passed off as chicken. In 2020, crow meat was sold in Rameswaram; in 2021, Bengaluru reported cases involving rat and dog meat; and just last year, similar suspicions at the Bengaluru railway station sparked public outrage. The two accused, identified as Kamal (36) and Selvam (35), were arrested under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. They were remanded to judicial custody on July 28. Ranger Vimal Kumar, who led the operation, confirmed that a broader investigation is underway to trace the extent of the illegal activity and determine if others were involved. The case has renewed calls for stricter surveillance and regulation of street food vendors to safeguard public health and prevent wildlife exploitation. view comments First Published: July 30, 2025, 15:09 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
