Cambridgeshire Police recruit 30 extra community officers
The move is part of the Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee launched by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on a visit to the county in April.The Labour government is aiming to put named local officers into each neighbourhood and boost police ranks by 13,000 by 2029.Mr Dean said he hoped the extra officers would build on the community work already being done by other local teams."What I hope to achieve is extra visibility, extra engagement, really dealing with the crimes and the incidents that matter to our communities," said the chief constable."Our neighbourhood teams do a fantastic job and have done a fantastic job, but this really does enhance that offer to our communities."
Sgt Chris Arnold is part of the new city centre Neighbourhood Uplift team, who with another sergeant will be leading eight constables and a police community support officer."What I'm really looking forward to is increasing [officer] visibility in the city," he said. "It's going to be hugely impactful for the city to see an extra host of police officers to try and keep our streets safe."The force said the officers would provide increased coverage and visibility as police continue to work with partners and local communities to tackle key issues such as anti-social behaviour, retail crime, drug dealing and knife crime.
Danielle Campbell, 52, lives in Paston, Peterborough, and said more officers were needed. Her friend had a handbag snatched as they were unloading her car outside her house."I don't feel safe going out at night, and I'm from London, and I felt safe there," she said. She said it was not the police's fault, as it was stretched, but wondered how an extra 30 officers could impact the county. "Unfortunately it's the little crimes that are getting left," she said. "If there were more police I would feel safer, it's just a deterrent."
Mary Skyers, 75, who lives in Bretton said she would welcome more officers walking the streets rather than in cars "flying past", as they did in the past. "It's a reassurance for a lot of people, especially elderly people," she said."There's a lot of crime, knives and everything that goes on. You do need them."
Daniel Slack, 26, from Peterborough, said he has had "good and bad experiences with the police" in the past.He wants them to do more about the drug use and prostitution where he lives, and would welcome a better police presence. "The area I'm in, I've seen people robbed. I've been robbed at cash machines, seen people get attacked, especially due to drug use."And if there was more police hopefully that would prevent that happening."

This is the moment police found a haul of Apple devices worth nearly £100,000 in the back seat of a car after masked raiders hit a phone shop in central London. Get your act together on immigration, Trump tells Europe as he lands in Scotland
Europe 'better get your act together' on immigration, US President Donald Trump said as he landed in Scotland. Mr Trump is in the country for a four-day visit to both of his golf clubs in Aberdeen and Ayrshire. Landing at around 8.30pm on Friday, the president was greeted by Scottish Secretary Ian Murray before speaking to reporters. Asked about illegal immigration – which successive UK governments have sought to curb – Mr Trump said: 'On immigration, you better get your act together. 'You're not going to have Europe anymore, you've got to get your act together. 'As you know, last month we had nobody entering our country – nobody, (we) shut it down.' He added: 'You've got to stop this horrible invasion that's happening to Europe.' Immigration, Mr Trump said, was 'killing Europe'. Some European leaders, he continued, 'have not let it happen' and are 'not getting the proper credit they should', though the president did not say who he was talking about. Mr Trump said: 'Many countries in Europe, some people, some leaders, have not let it happen, and they're not getting the proper credit they should.' The president also praised Sir Keir Starmer ahead of a meeting between the two at one of his courses in the coming days, describing him as a 'good man'. 'I like your Prime Minister, he's slightly more liberal than I am – as you probably heard – but he's a good man. He got a trade deal done,' he said. 'You know, they've been working on this deal for 12 years, he got it done – that's a good deal, it's a good deal for the UK.' The president's motorcade – which contained more than two dozen vehicles – passed a small group of protesters as he entered his Turnberry golf club. Mr Trump also suggested he would be meeting Sir Keir 'tomorrow evening', although it is understood the pair will not meet until Monday. As well as the Prime Minister, Scottish First Minister John Swinney will meet with the president, as will European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, who confirmed on X she will come to Scotland on Sunday in a bid to hash out a trade deal between the US and Europe. Mr Trump told journalists there was a 'good 50/50 chance' of a deal being struck, adding that it would be the 'biggest deal of them all'. The president and Sir Keir are expected to discuss potential changes to the UK-US trade deal which came into force last month. Mr Swinney has pledged to 'essentially speak out for Scotland'. Speaking as he boarded Air Force One in the US, Mr Trump said he would be having dinner with the Prime Minister at Turnberry, before 'going to the oil capital of Europe, which is Aberdeen'. He said: 'We're going to have a good time. I think the Prime Minister and I get along very well.' Mr Trump added: 'We're going to be talking about the trade deal that we made and maybe even approve it.' He also told journalists he was 'looking forward' to meeting with the 'Scottish leader' Mr Swinney, describing him as a 'good man'. During his time in Scotland, the president is also likely to spark a number of protests, with concerns being raised about how such demonstrations are policed. Police Scotland has called in support from other forces in the UK to help bolster officer numbers, though senior officers and the organisation which represents the rank-and-file have accepted Mr Trump's visit will have an impact.

Devon and Cornwall crime commissioner sorry for multiple bodies claim
A police and crime commissioner has apologised for claiming that multiple human remains had been discovered in woodland in Cornwall at the centre of a murder investigation. Alison Hernandez told a meeting of the Devon and Cornwall police and crime panel that 'dead bodies' had been found at Sticker, near St Austell, and investigations were continuing to establish exactly how many. Devon and Cornwall police said in response that the body of one man had been recovered from woods and no other remains had been found. Police and forensic experts have been carrying out extensive inquiries in the woodland since the discovery of the body of 43-year-old Daniel Coleman. James Desborough, 39, is accused of murdering Coleman, from St Austell, between 2 June and 7 July. He is due back before Truro crown court next month. Hernandez said on Friday evening: 'In trying to be helpful I responded to an operational question at the police and crime panel, however, I was not fully up to date with the facts of the investigation. 'I apologise for any alarm this may have caused. The police have operational primacy over these matters.' Det Supt Jon Bancroft, with Devon and Cornwall police, said: 'We currently have three separate murder investigations being conducted in the Cornwall area. 'I have oversight of all of these investigations at this time, and can confirm they are being carried out independently of each other and are not believed to be linked. 'I can categorically state that we have recovered remains believed to be those of Daniel Coleman only from an area of woodland in Sticker.' Police are also investigating the discovery of the body of Lee Hockey, 50, who was found in separate woodland between Truro and Probus on 1 July. A third murder inquiry is under way after a fatal fire at a residential property in Newquay on 22 July. The body of a man in his 30s was found in the property, with a 33-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder.
