LONDON - Newly-promoted Premier League team Burnley are offering their fans a virtual reality viewing experience, meaning they can enjoy being at the club's Turf Moor stadium from their room.
A partnership with VR experts Rezzil will mean a 'first-of-its-kind' immersive broadcast of Burnley's pre-season friendly on Aug. 9 against Italian club Lazio.
Fans who acquire special headsets will be able to take a virtual seat inside the stadium, complete with match day commentary and in-stadium audio.
"It reflects our forward-thinking approach to fan engagement and our commitment to global supporters," Burnley chairman Alan Pace said. "Our mission is to provide the best experiences to fans, and by entering into the world of Virtual Reality, they can get closer to the game than ever before."
Manchester-based company Rezzil provides VR technology to help train athletes and provide analysis in various sports and last year signed a four-year partnership deal with the Premier League aimed at revolutionising fan engagement.
"We're thrilled to collaborate with Burnley FC and the Premier League to bring fans a truly next-generation football experience," said Andy Etches, co-founder of Rezzil.
"Our technology has long been trusted by elite athletes to sharpen performance, and now we're using that same technology to bring it to supporters. It's a new way to watch football; it's like having a seat in the stands." REUTERS

Fernandes critical of 'lazy' Manchester United in pre-season draw with Everton

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes let rip at his teammates following their 2-2 pre-season draw with fellow Premier League side Everton, saying their performance was "lazy" and calling for further reinforcements. A second-half goal from Mason Mount had United on course for victory in Atlanta, Georgia after Fernandes's opener was cancelled out by Iliman Ndiaye, but a bizarre 75th-minute own goal by Ayden Heaven gifted Everton the draw on Sunday. The draw put a slight damper on the Old Trafford club's tour of the United States, after promising victories over West Ham United and Bournemouth last month. "It's been important for developing how we want to play and getting the new players involved too," Fernandes told NBC Sports. "We didn't want to finish in this way. Our performance wasn't the best and we were a little bit lazy today. We want to avoid that because with laziness you can pay at any moment." United had their worst-ever Premier League campaign in the 2024-25 season, finishing 15th in the standings, and are looking to strengthen in the transfer window, signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo - both of whom started against Everton. "It's improving. But it's not the place it needs to be. I don't want to take a dig at anyone but the club is doing the best they can in terms of the financial situation they talk about," Fernandes said. "But it was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here, more quality to get everyone to step up a little more to get to the XI, and I think that is what the club are trying to do. "Hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that." Asked about Fernandes's comments, manager Ruben Amorim told reporters: "I think I'm happy for the players to have that feeling. It's saying that they understand the situation. So, it's a good feeling. "I think the momentum of the tour was perfect. We had the weeks to work with a good environment, good feeling, and then we go back to Carrington (training ground) and we are near to start the season. "We are going with the feeling that we need to do a lot of things (better)." United begin the new Premier League season against Arsenal on August 17. REUTERS

BYD sales sputter as competition, regulatory scrutiny grow

HONG KONG – BYD's sales barely grew in July, raising doubts about whether the Chinese electric-vehicle maker will meet its annual target. The world's biggest EV seller delivered 344,296 vehicles in July, it said on Aug 1. That's up 0.6 per cent from a year earlier, but down 10 per cent from June. While the slowdown isn't unexpected given China new car sales are typically weak in the summer, BYD faces headwinds in hitting its annual goal of 5.5 million units. Chinese authorities have stepped up scrutiny on the nation's auto sector, pledging to crack down on the heavy discounts that have fueled a price war. Having sold 2.49 million units through July, the maker of the electric Seagull hatchback now needs to deliver on average roughly 602,000 vehicles a month for the rest of the year to reach its target. The most vehicles BYD has ever sold in a single month was just shy of 515,000 last December. Most rivals are showing signs of resilient demand. Geely Automobile Holdings sold 237,717 cars in July, its highest since November. Meanwhile, Stellantis-partner Leapmotor and Xpeng achieved new monthly records, delivering 50,129 and 36,717 vehicles respectively. Fellow upstart Xiaomi also reported record deliveries of more than 30,000 units. In contrast, Li Auto's 30,731 units were down about 40 per cent from a year earlier. China's Passenger Car Association said last week that retail passenger vehicle sales in July were estimated to grow 7.6 per cent from a year earlier, or an 11 per cent decline from June. Nio continued to struggle as it posted a 16 per cent month-on-month fall in sales, recording its smallest sales volume since March. But Nio's shares jumped 8.6 per cent on Aug 1, after the launch of its Onvo L90 model which analysts see as attractive in its pricing and offering. BLOOMBERG
