
Japan's SMBC seeks CCI nod to acquire 20 pc stake in Yes Bank

Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) has sought clearance from the fair trade regulator CCI to acquire a 20 per cent stake in private sector lender Yes Bank The development came after State Bank of India (SBI) and seven other lenders last month announced selling 20 per cent of their combined stakes in Yes Bank to SMBC for a consideration of Rs 13,483 crore, making it the largest cross-border investment in the Indian banking sector "The proposed combination relates to the acquisition of share capital and voting rights of Yes Bank by SMBC," a notice filed with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) said on June 23.SMBC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc (SMFG). SMFG is the second-largest banking group in Japan with total assets of USD 2 trillion as of December 2024 with a strong global presence.SMBC is among the leading foreign banks in India and SMFG's wholly-owned subsidiary SMFG India Credit Company is among the largest diversified NBFCs in India.The proposed transaction does not raise any competition concerns, irrespective of how the relevant market is defined, the parties have said."To assist the CCI in its assessment, the parties have outlined potential overlaps in business activities across various segments, including lending, digital payments, deposit-taking, forex services, investment banking, loans against securities, and cash management," they added.After the completion of the transaction, SMBC will become the single largest shareholder of Mumbai-based Yes Bank Of the 20 per cent stake, SBI would dilute a 13.19 per cent stake in Yes Bank in favour of SMBC for a consideration of Rs 8,889 crore, while 6.81 per cent shareholding will be offloaded by seven other lenders -- Axis Bank IDFC First Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank -- for about Rs 4,594 crore.SBI and the seven investor lenders had invested in the bank as part of the Yes Bank reconstruction scheme in March 2020. The state-owned SBI currently holds a 24 per cent stake in Yes Bank, will be left with a little over 10 per cent stake after the dilution.For the fourth quarter ended March 2025, Yes Bank reported a 63 per cent jump in standalone net profit at Rs 738 crore as compared to Rs 451.9 crore in the corresponding quarter a year ago.In FY25, the bank's net profit doubled to Rs 2,406 crore as compared to Rs 1,251 crore in the preceding fiscal year.

Sitharaman proposes partnering with European Investment Bank on digitalization
Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday met Nadia Calvino, president of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Group, and proposed partnering with the bank to take India's digitization expertise to third countries. They met on the sidelines of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4) in Seville, Spain. Discussions were held on wide-ranging issues, including EIB's expanding portfolio in India—seven metro projects and an urban rail project—and diversifying in other sectors such as water and sanitation. Digital diplomacy Recognizing India's strength in digitalization and its role in promoting economic growth and inclusivity, the finance minister and Calvino also discussed the scope for partnering in third countries in this field and other areas. Calvino looked forward to further strengthening of partnership between EIB and India. The meeting with EIB followed Sitaraman's meeting with Dr. Shane Reti, Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology, Universities, Statistics and Pacific Peoples, New Zealand, on Monday evening at the same event. The ministers discussed cooperation in defence, education, technology and agriculture, and shared values rooted in democracy, rule of law, and robust people-to-people ties. Sitharaman discussed the world-class opportunities available at GIFT-IFSC in banking, bullion exchange, capital markets, funds ecosystem, FinTech, insurers and (re)insurers. The finance minister also noted educational exchange as a cornerstone of India-New Zealand ties with many Indian students pursuing higher education in New Zealand. Reti agreed on the need for enhancing education sector ties, and also shared New Zealand's experience in engaging with the Pacific region. Sitharaman also met Elmer Schialer Salcedo, Foreign Minister of Peru and Reem Alabali-Radovan, Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany, on the sidelines of FFD4 on Monday evening. The finance minister discussed deepening strategic partnerships across FinTech, trade, investment, mining and defence, as well as the potential for collaboration in infrastructure projects, particularly the railways with the Peruvian minister. Sitharaman highlighted India's expertise in building rail links and manufacturing of rolling stock. Salcedo said that he looked forward to India's participation in international bids for three rail links being developed in Peru. The Union Finance Minister shared India's interest in diversifying exports to Peru, especially in automobiles, pharmaceuticals, textiles, engineering goods, and IT services; and valued imports of critical minerals such as copper and lithium from Peru - potentially key to India's energy transition and industrial growth. With the German minister Radovan, Sitharaman discussed various areas of collaboration under the India-Germany Green and Sustainable Development Partnership including renewable energy, urban mobility, sustainable urban development and sustainable livelihoods through ecology.

Chhattisgarh launches One-Click Single Window System 2.0 to boost investment, ease of doing business
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Tuesday launched the 'One-Click Single Window System 2.0' at the Chhattisgarh Industry Dialogue–2 in Raipur, projecting it as a major step towards making the state a national hub for future-facing industries such as semiconductors, AI, pharmaceuticals, defence, and green hydrogen. 'Our new industrial policy is focused on employment generation and economic prosperity,' the CM said, adding that over 20,000 youth will benefit from the Rs 1.23 lakh crore worth of investment proposals received from 11 companies. Sai also announced the approval of the draft Chhattisgarh State Logistics Policy 2025, which aims to transform the state into a national logistics hub. 'Our geographical position gives us a connectivity edge. The new policy will attract global and domestic logistics players, strengthen export infrastructure, and make warehousing affordable for industries and farmers,' he said. In the last six months alone, Chhattisgarh has received investment proposals worth Rs 5.5 lakh crore. The state accounted for 3.71 per cent of India's total investment inflows in FY2025. The new One-Click Single Window System 2.0 integrates online applications, departmental approvals, and subsidies. 'It ensures transparent, real-time approvals for industrial set-ups,' Sai said. Commerce and Industries Minister Lakhan Lal Dewangan said that with the new online approval mechanisms, industrial areas are now offering land for online allotment. 'Chhattisgarh is fast becoming a top-tier industrial state,' he said. Senior officials including Chief Secretary Amitabh Jain, Principal Secretary Subodh Kumar Singh, and industry leaders were present.

AU alumni association will set up regional chapters abroad: VC
Visakhapatnam: Andhra University (AU) alumni association will establish regional chapters in foreign countries, said AU vice-chancellor Prof GP Rajasekhar. He inaugurated the exit engagement evening (E³) programme jointly organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and AU on the beach road. "All foreign students have become an integral part of AU and India. I urge the AU alumni abroad to work towards enhancing the reputation of the university overseas," he said. ICCR scholarship division director Sanjiv Vedi said that foreign students who complete their education at AU and return to their countries carry Indian values with them. "This programme adds further value to the friendship between India and various countries. I encourage the graduating students to raise awareness about ICCR's services among students in their countries to benefit more people. ICCR provides scholarships necessary for foreign students' education, which is a unique and diverse initiative," said Sanjiv. AU registrar Prof EN Dhanamjaya Rao said that over 1,100 foreign students from 59 countries are pursuing their education at AU. He congratulated the foreign students for choosing Andhra University and assured them that they would receive a quality education at AU.
