Karisma Kapoor's Marriage To Sunjay Kapur Was 'Abrupt', Says Suneel Darshan: 'She Became A Trophy'

Last Updated: Suneel Darshan opens up on Karisma Kapoor's 'abrupt' marriage to Sunjay Kapur, saying she didn't fit into Delhi culture and became a 'trophy' for the family. Filmmaker Suneel Darshan, who has worked closely with Karisma Kapoor, has opened up about her marriage to businessman Sunjay Kapur, calling it 'abrupt." Speaking to journalist Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Darshan reflected on Karisma's personal life, her bond with Sunjay's family, and how her life changed after the wedding. When asked if he reached out to Karisma after Sunjay Kapur's recent passing, Darshan responded with warmth and empathy. 'We've exchanged this thing… I've known the issue too deeply. Right from the first day, I've known exactly," he said, recalling how Karisma was best friends with Sunjay Kapur's sister since childhood. 'Some things just need to be buried," he added, hinting at Karisma's tumultuous married life. The Abrupt End of Karisma Kapoor-Abhishek Bachchan, and Sudden Marriage Darshan described both Karisma's breakup with Abhishek Bachchan and her wedding to Sanjay Kapur as sudden. 'I thought it was an abrupt decision… something had to do with the stars — not film stars — the stars," he said. He also suggested that the marriage may have followed the emotional aftermath of her broken engagement. 'One didn't know what it was… she was never seen as a couple with Sanjay before. Some things are destined to happen." Karisma Wanted to Be a Homemaker, Not a Socialite Darshan recalled how Karisma had envisioned a homely life post-marriage. 'She wanted to be a domesticated wife… She wasn't the kind who wanted to go play golf on a Saturday. She wanted to spend time at home," he shared. He described Karisma as someone grounded despite her stardom. She was 'a nice girl, a very nice girl like that… it's very sad." 'She Became a Trophy for the Family' Darshan didn't mince words when asked if Karisma had become a 'trophy wife' for Sanjay's family. 'I think that was where the problem came. That's what I heard," he said. 'She was placed into a world which was not hers. Delhi has its own culture and she wasn't fitting into it." Despite her fame, Darshan said Karisma was never pretentious and came from a legacy rooted in simplicity, being Raj Kapoor's granddaughter and a former No.1 heroine. But in her new life, 'she was in this palatial house with endless cars… and it just wasn't her world." Karisma Kapoor's ex-husband, Sunjay Kapur, passed away in June 2025. His death was attributed to a heart attack, possibly triggered by a bee sting during a polo match in the UK. Sunjay Kapur and Karisma Kapoor were married from 2003 to 2016. They have two kids together. First Published: July 25, 2025, 01:31 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Akshay Quit Barsaat After Media 'Mentioned Of A Relationship' With Priyanka, Recalls Producer

Last Updated: Akshay Kumar walked out of Barsaat amid buzz of tensions with Priyanka Chopra. Producer Suneel Darshan recalls how the sudden exit left him shocked. Filmmaker Suneel Darshan recently opened up about Akshay Kumar's sudden exit from the 2005 romantic drama Barsaat, which originally starred him along with Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif. The producer-director, who has collaborated with Akshay in several films over the years, revealed that the actor backed out after shooting a romantic song with Priyanka, allegedly due to issues in his personal life. Barsaat was eventually done by Bobby Deol, Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu. Speaking to journalist Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Suneel said, 'Barsaat was designed immediately after Andaaz to again be a triangular love story with a new dimension, and Akshay was cast in the lead role." He recalled how Akshay had date issues and asked for a slight postponement, which the producer agreed to. Romantic Track With Priyanka Already Shot Suneel had already recorded the music and even filmed a song featuring Akshay and Priyanka. However, delays crept in when Priyanka had to travel for international commitments. 'Priyanka Chopra had some international shows for which she was out for 3 months. So the film kept getting delayed," he explained. By the time she returned and it was time to begin the final leg of the shoot, Akshay invited Suneel to his set, something unusual, as they always met at the producer's office. 'He called me to inform me that there were some issues which were uncontrollable and had repercussions on his personal life. He asked me to take a decision on how we move forward." Was It Priyanka or Him? Producer Opens Up While rumours of a relationship between Akshay and Priyanka had already caught the media's attention, Suneel clarified that it wasn't about Akshay refusing to work with her. 'Either of them, the circumstances had reached such a point where… there were issues," he said, adding that the actor left it up to the producer to choose between the two. He continued, 'The audience, the public, the media did mention of a relationship, which the wife got more of…" Suneel further revealed, 'Suddenly after asking that person to wait for 18 months for your dates, you one day just say, 'Sorry, I can't be a part of it.' I was shocked." Akshay Promised Compensation But It Wasn't Enough Though Akshay reportedly offered to do another film to make up for it, Suneel chose not to proceed with him. 'He did want to compensate by saying that I did the next film for you. But I did not. I just thought this was unbelievable. Coming from Akshay… your expectations were never too much." Despite the setback, the producer harboured no hard feelings. 'He had promised me he would want to do 100 movies with me. I managed to do seven," Suneel concluded.
