
Two Sabah YBs among trio to be charged today

Kota Kinabalu: Two state assemblymen and a businessman arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) under Ops Adun, are reportedly scheduled to be charged today (Monday). In a press invite mailed to the media, the MACC said the trio are expected to be charged at the Special Corruption Court here at about 9am. It is understood that they will face a total of four charges under the MACC Act 2009. Two of the charges will be brought under Section 16(b)(A) of the Act for offering bribes, while the other two will be under Section 16(a)(A) for accepting bribes. So far, 15 politicians have been implicated in corrupt activities between 2023 and 2024, in exchange for assistance in processing mineral exploration licence applications. Earlier this month, MACC said it would charge two Sabah assemblymen and a civilian in court this month over a corruption scandal involving the mining licences. Ex-surveyor at Dungun council charged with graft
KUALA TERENGGANU: A former quantity surveyor at the Dungun Municipal Council was charged in the Sessions Court here with abusing his position to obtain gratification. Mohammad Hanif Ahmad, 41, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial to the charge before judge Mohd Azhar Othman on Monday (June 30). He is charged with using his position as a member of the tender and quotation evaluation committee by recommending a company owned by his parents for a work contract worth RM150,000. The job involved the construction of an animal shelter at Taman Rimba, Bandar Bukit Bauk in Dungun six years ago. The offence was allegedly committed in April and May 2019 at the Dungun Municipal Council office. The charge, under Section 23 (1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction. The court allowed Hanif bail of RM6,000 with one surety and also ordered him to report to the nearest MACC office every month, not to intimidate witnesses, and to surrender his passport. Former Felda staff jailed, fined RM20k for misusing settlers' death benefits
KUANTAN: A former administrative assistant was sentenced to three months in jail and fined RM20,000 by the Sessions Court today for criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM41,652.42 in death benefits meant for seven Felda settlers' families. Nurul Syafiha Awang Za, 36, pleaded guilty to the charge before Judge Sazlina Safie, who ordered her to begin serving the sentence immediately. The court ruled that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional six months' imprisonment. The case involved funds entrusted to Nurul Syafiha by Roslan Kumin, intended as death benefits for the next of kin of Felda Sungai Panching settlers. Instead, she misused the money for personal expenses between February 2018 and 2019 while working at the Felda Sungai Panching Timur Office. Charged under Section 406 of the Penal Code, the offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment, whipping, and a fine. Deputy Public Prosecutor Kamariah Seman from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) led the prosecution, while Nurul Syafiha was represented by lawyer Datuk Syed Azimal Amir Syed Abu Bakar.

Former admin assistant jailed, fined for CBT involving RM41,000 in Felda settlers death benefits
KUANTAN, June 30 — A former administrative assistant was today sentenced to three months' jail and a fine of RM20,000, in default six months in prison, by the Sessions Court here for criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving more than RM41,000 in death benefits of seven Felda settlers. Judge Sazlina Safie meted out the sentence on Nurul Syafiha Awang Za, 36, after she pleaded guilty to the charge. The judge ordered Nurul Syafiha to serve the jail sentence from today. The woman, who was then with the Felda office here, was charged as a person entrusted by one Roslan Kumin with RM41,652.42 in cash to be given as death benefits to the next of kin of seven Felda Sungai Panching settlers, to have committed CBT by dishonestly using the money for her personal use. The offence was committed at the Felda Sungai Panching Timur Office here between February 2018 and 2019. The mother of three was charged under Section 406 of the Penal Code, which provides imprisonment for not more than 10 years with whipping and is liable to a fine upon conviction. Prosecuting officer Kamariah Seman, from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), appeared for the prosecution, while Nurul Syafiha was represented by lawyer Datuk Syed Azimal Amir Syed Abu Bakar. — Bernama
