New generation ‘gold' rush attracting ASX juniors to the US West Coast

News.com.au22-06-2025
The US West Coast is rich in gold and much-sought-after critical minerals
This is capturing attention amid a push to boost domestic production
Australian juniors are capitalising on this opportunity
The US West Coast has seen more than its fair share of gold rushes in the past and is increasingly being recognised for its critical minerals prospectivity.
Notable examples include NP Materials' Mountain Pass, the only producing rare earths mine in the US, in California – one of the five leading mining states in America.
Eastern Oregon also has significant historical gold production and shares many geological features with northern Nevada, where major deposits such as the Battle Mountain-Phoenix intrusion related gold-silver-copper deposits are located.
Despite this, it has seen very little exploration and mining activity for almost a century.
Being able to source domestic sources of critical minerals is certainly a priority for the US government as export curbs placed by China, which dominates production of these commodities that are so badly needed for high-tech applications, have prompted a push to develop new mines within the country.
Nowhere is this clearer than the flurry of executive orders that have left US President Donald Trump's desk that are aimed at boosting critical minerals production and securing supply chains.
This interest and prospectivity has also drawn Australian juniors keen to make their fortunes.
Locksley Resources' non-executive chairman Nathan Lude told Stockhead the company was drawn to the US West Coast by a rare combination of significant geological potential, strategic location of its Mojave project next to Mountain Pass and national relevance for critical minerals.
'The Mojave region of California hosts a well known rare earth corridor, including the only currently producing REE mine in the US, Mountain Pass,' he noted.
'Our project sits within this highly prospective zone and offers exposure to critical minerals such as neodymium and antimony both essential for the energy transition and defence supply chains.
'Equally important, California offers a unique convergence of federal policy support, infrastructure, and downstream industry presence.
'The proximity to existing processing hubs, logistics networks, and end users from EV manufacturers to defence contractors makes this region an ideal base for our strategy.'
Here are some ASX-listed companies with operations in the region.
The Mojave project in southeastern California is just 1.4km from MP Materials' Mountain Pass mine and stands out for its unique combination of both antimony and rare earth element potential.
'While Mountain Pass produces rare earths, there is currently no active antimony production in the United States, despite rising demand and prices.' Lude said.
'The Mojave project has delivered exceptional high grade surface samples across both commodities, with results of up to 12.1% total rare earth oxides and 46% antimony.
'This positions Mojave as a strategically located and technically compelling critical minerals projects in the US.'
Mojave also hosts the historically producing Desert antimony mine, which operated briefly between 1926-27 and again in 1939, when both technology and antimony demand were limited.
'Today the region benefits from established transport infrastructure, giving it a distinct edge over remote or geopolitically sensitive deposits elsewhere,' Lude added.
'Combined with strong federal support for critical minerals, Mojave stands out as a very attractive exploration and development opportunity.'
Over the coming months, Locksley will focus on advancing the project from being drill-ready to a federally supported, development project with downstream support.
Key steps to achieving this objective include finalising permitting and access agreements with the Bureau of Land Management for the Desert mine, conducting detailed geological mapping, geophysics, and geochemical sampling, as well as listing on the OTCQB exchange.
The company will also appoint a contractor to conduct a maiden drill program to establish mineralisation and scale across both commodities, strengthen its US strategic partnership, and continue engagement with government, community, and potential offtake partners.
Codrus Minerals (ASX:CDR)
The Bull Run project in Oregon is located between the +500,000oz historical high-grade producer Cracker Creek and the 1Moz gold, 3Moz silver Grassy Mountain deposit.
Earlier this month a diamond drill rig operated by contractor Integri-Core was mobilised to the site, where the company had prioritised five targets across 2km of strike extent.
They include the Eldorado Zone, which living up to its name, has delivered high gold and copper rock chips of up to 28g/t Au and 1.5% Cu.
Grades of up to 60g/t gold and 2.5% molybdenum, suggesting a potential polymetallic system, have also been found at Lady May.
'We have several priority geochemical targets and down dip extensions of historical gold workings to drill for high grade gold mineralisation, and beyond that some very strong and compelling blind IP targets that are prospective for copper as well as gold,' exploration manager Stuart Owen said.
'We have enough drill ready targets to keep us busy for 2025 and beyond, but will also be working on progressing some compelling geophysical targets within the broader Bull Run project to drill ready status.'
Historical drill results have demonstrated the potential for high-grade discoveries at shallow depths, with hole DDH34-82-1 striking 20.5m at 3.53g/t Au from just 7.9m including a 6.9m stretch at 9.31g/t.
This comes a month after the company received a permit for 14,000m of drilling across the Bull Run site.
Eldorado and Sunrise are the southernmost prospects, alongside Lady May and Whited, and to the far north of a 2km strike zone Payton.
Across the targets, Codrus' early stage exploration has picked up gold in soil anomalism up to 0.5g/t, with peak values exceeding 1g/t Au, locally extreme soil values up to 27g/t Au and rock chip samples returning values up to 1040g/t Au.
Also, a recent 3D IP Resistivity survey delineated chargeability anomalies up to 400 by 400 metres in extent. These anomalies coincide with high-priority geochemical targets, further strengthening their prospectivity.
Previous drilling conducted more than 40 years ago has never been properly followed up on, despite hitting economic gold grades down to just 60m down hole from surface.
It presents a massive opportunity for Codrus Minerals at the Baker County ground, where it holds 91 claims with an option over the 11 claims covering the Record mine.
Dateline Resources (ASX:DTR)
Colosseum rare earths project in California received a shoutout in June 2025 from Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum who said restarting the mine was a pivotal step towards bolstering America's supply of critical minerals and reducing US reliance on overseas sources for REEs.
While Colosseum is still a ways from being reopened nor does it have a rare earths resource as yet, it does have a gold resource of about 1.1Moz that is currently the subject of a bankable feasibility study for a 2Mtpa project capable of producing ~75,000oz of gold per annum for 8.5 years.
The project is believed to host the same mineralising system as that Mountain Pass.
Dateline has also started a geochemical sampling program across the broader project area to generate detailed geochemical maps and prioritise areas with the greatest gold or REE mineral potential for drilling.
A magnetotelluric survey is also on track to start shortly in parallel with the latter stages of the soil program. This will collect deep subsurface data along multiple lines across the claims to image geological structures and alteration zones within the Colosseum claim boundary.
A maiden REE-focused drill program is currently being finalised with scheduling to be informed by these new datasets.
Haranga Resources (ASX:HAR)
Haranga recently struck, well not quite the mother lode, but certainly acquired a project in California's Mother Lode belt that is known for its rich gold deposits that were the subject of the gold rush of 1849.
The company's Lincoln gold mine, which it says is production-ready, has reportedly produced some 3.4Moz from the leases it covers between 1851 and 1952 though a number of blind discoveries were made in the early 1980s with ~35,000m of drilling conducted between 1983 and 2013.
Present resources in ground are somewhat more modest at ~286,000oz at a high-grade of 9.3g/t according to the non-JORC NI 43-101 numbers.
Lincoln already has major approvals secured, $90m in sunk capital and extensive existing process and underground infrastructure in place, so Haranga's claim probably isn't too far off reality.
Jindalee Lithium (ASX:JLL)
The McDermitt project sits at the northern end of the McDermitt Caldera – 35km from Thacker Pass in Nevada, the most advanced lithium project that is currently under development with backing from General Motors and a low-interest loan from the US Department of Energy, and is amendable to bulk mining methods.
The pre-feasibility study released in November 2024 outlined a project capable of producing lithium carbonate for 63 years.
It demonstrates a highly profitable, low-opex of $8080/t LCE, multi-decade project with a 5-year capital payback on Capex of $3.02bn.
Post-tax NPV and IRR are $3.23bn and 17.9% respectively.
McDermitt currently has an ore reserve of 2.34Mt LCE which makes up a little over 10% of the overall indicated and inferred resource of 21.5Mt LCE.
Jindalee also holds the Clayton North project in Nevada that is 23km north of Silver Peak, the only producing lithium operation in the US.
Clayton North features extensive areas of lithium bearing claystones outcrop while initial drilling has returned intercepts of 6.1m at 1093ppm lithium and 11.2m at 1006ppm lithium from shallow depths.

Koonenberry Gold outlines emerging bulk tonnage gold play with high-grade potential at Sunnyside

Koonenberry drilling at Sunnyside prospect in NSW delivers 60m at 0.7g/t gold intersection Results from completed Phase 1 drill program indicate Sunnyside as an emerging bulk tonnage gold play Sunnyside Shear Zone shows potential for growth with ~2km prospective zone identified Special Report: Final assays from diamond drilling at Koonenberry Gold's Enmore project in New South Wales highlight the Sunnyside prospect as an emerging bulk tonnage play with high-grade potential. Latest results extend the mineralised zone to more than 260m with hole 25ENDD007, which was drilled 40m along strike from hole 006, returning a 60m intersection grading 0.7g/t gold from a down-hole depth of 105m including 9m at 2.74g/t from 112m. Adding further interest for Koonenberry Gold (ASX:KNB), holes 008 to 010 were potentially drilled beneath the up-plunge projection of mineralisation intersected to the east. This is highlighted in a long section, where the mineralisation has an apparent ~easterly plunge with gold mineralisation open up-plunge, along strike and at depth. There are indications of higher grades such as a 1m zone at 11.9g/t gold from 244m within the broader intersection of 6m at 2.58g/t gold from 243m in hole 25ENDD010. Managing director Dan Power said the 'extremely successful' phase 1 drill campaign at Enmore had delivered exceptional results that pointed to an emerging gold discovery story at Sunnyside, which had standalone bulk tonnage as well as high-grade gold potential. 'The final four holes all intersected altered granite host rock, however the reported intercepts have become narrower and lower grade to the SW,' he added. 'These holes are within the mineralised system but may have drilled 'underneath' or peripheral to the better grades and widths intersected in holes to the east and at depth. 'When plotted in long section, results indicate a potential plunge of the mineralisation along the shear zone towards the east with a high-grade zone of ~130m clearly open at depth.' He added that drilling had intersected mineralisation from surface to a vertical depth of 300m, strike of ~260m and true width of ~75m, with the system remaining open at depth and along strike to the southwest and northeast along the Sunnyside Shear Zone, and providing clear potential for growth. 'To the east of Sunnyside, we see the potential for extensions and/or repetitions with gold and arsenic in soils and high-grade rock chips highlighting a ~2km long prospective zone along the shear at the contact between the granite and sediments,' Power noted. 'Limited, wide-spaced and relatively shallow historical drilling in this location also highlights the potential for additional discoveries, with most of these holes intersecting anomalous gold but rarely testing broad intervals of the preferred granite host rock.' Enmore project The 302km2 Enmore project sits within the underexplored New England Gold Belt, which hosts the 1.7Moz gold-antimony Hillgrove mine, the 8Moz Ravenswood gold mine, the 7.7Moz gold and 0.36Mt copper Mt Morgan mine and the 2.5Moz Cracow gold mine. While results from Sunnyside have really underscored its potential, it is far from being the only prospect of interest, with the Borah fault hosting historical high-grade intersections, while historical workings are present at Sherwood, Queen of Sheba and Lone Hand. Small wonder then that the company is using today's results to plan more than 10,000m of further drilling that will be funded from its existing cash position of $8.6m. This follow-up drilling is anticipated to start in late August and will test the continuity and extensions to mineralisation at Sunnyside as well as discovery and growth drilling along the Sunnyside Shear Zone. Growth drilling will focus on the east of the Shear Zone where KNB has identified a ~2km strike length of highly prospective granite associated with gold and arsenic soil anomalies, high-grade rock chips and wide-spaced, relatively shallow historical drilling containing anomalous gold. Induced polarisation surveys are being conducted at Sunnyside as a tool to help rank district targets and assist with drill targeting. ASX200: Gold the bright spot on flat day for local markets

Shaky US jobs data and the subsequent sacking of the labour statistics chief has seen investors flocking to Australian gold stocks on Monday. While the ASX200 closed up by the barest of margins on Monday, the gold index benchmark grew 3.5 per cent to start the week. At the close of trade, strong consumer staples and materials sectors had dragged the S&P/ASX200 to a 0.02 per cent gain, closing up 1.7 points to 8663.7. The All Ords rose 0.06 per cent. Gold shares were the shimmering highlight on the day, with the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries Gold benchmark gaining 3.57 per cent. Western Australian, Northern Territory and Alaskan operator Northern Star Resources – up 13 per cent on the year – tacked on another 5.6 per cent gain ($16.16) following the presentation of details from a site visit in Kalgoorlie. The inland city is hosting the Diggers and Dealers mining forum this week, and the historic town will be heaving following Monday's sterling gold results. Bellevue Gold shot up 6.4 per cent ($0.82), Mineral Resources' price lifted 3 per cent ($30.76), and Evolution Mining rose 2.5 per cent ($7.23). Evolution Mining boss Lawrie Conway warned the Kalgoorlie conference that boom cycles had been squandered before. 'As an industry, we have been poor allocators of capital through these periods of record margins,' he said on Monday. The gold price has risen $1000 in the space of four months. 'It's imperative for us … when the cycle turns, our shareholders aren't left looking and saying, 'Where is the cash?',' Mr Conway said. Across the border, the Whyalla steelworks and its associated iron ore mines are the target of a potential offer from Bluescope Steel and an international consortium. That news pushed Bluescope's share price down 1.2 per cent, closing at $23.10. The surge in gold has been ignited and sustained by rumblings in the US. Underwhelming jobs data at the end of their week prompted Donald Trump to sack the Bureau of Labor Statistics chief, sowing doubt in US economic data. 'The dire US jobs report raised expectations of a Fed rate cut in September and prompted risk aversion flows, including buying of gold,' said IG market analyst Tony Sycamore. 'The rebound from the $US3265 support zone suggests gold is consolidating gains from the first half of this year in a range between $US3450 and $US3250.' After an eight-month high a couple of weeks ago, the Aussie dollar has settled at 64.8 US cents. Trailing the materials sector at the top of the heap, consumer staples also had a bountiful day. This charge was led by gains for Coles (1.7 per cent) and Woolworths (1.3 per cent). In lock-step, health and wellness food company OMG Group shot to a 7 per cent gain ($0.008), while Farm Pride Foods, Pure Foods Tasmania, Synlait Milk and Ricegrowers Ltd all rose more than 3.6 per cent. From the farmgate to the bar stool, pub and hospitality giant Endeavour Group surged to a 2.9 per cent gain on the news its dual chairman-chief executive was quitting over board disagreements. Endeavour owns Dan Murphy's and BWS. The company already lined up former Virgin Australia chief executive, Jayne Hrdlicka, to take charge in the new year. Despite Monday's bump, Endeavour shares are down 23 per cent on this time last year. With an essentially flat day in local trading, six of 11 sectors finished in the red, with financials, energy and industrials being the dead weight. MM8 on path to Ravensthorpe production

Medallion snags Forrestania Nickel Operation from IGO for 1.5% net smelter royalty on future gold production Deal preserves $29m war chest to progress work streams to facilitate Ravensthorpe development decision Resource upgrade and metallurgical work will feed into key feasibility study Special Report: Medallion Metals has executed an agreement to acquire IGO's Forrestania Nickel Operation, which will enable a fast-tracked pathway to gold and copper production from its Ravensthorpe project in WA. The agreement includes the existing Cosmic Boy processing plant and equipment, infrastructure, inventories and information including mineral rights other than nickel and lithium. This is a key plank in Medallion Metals' (ASX:MM8) plan to make a Ravensthorpe final investment decision in late 2025 that will transform it into WA's newest gold and copper producer. What makes the deal attractive is that there's no upfront or deferred cash consideration with the company granting IGO (ASX:IGO) a net smelter royalty of up to 1.5% on all future gold production from the tenements as consideration for the acquisition. It allows the company to preserve its circa $29m in cash reserves to progress multiple work streams such as testwork, feasibility studies and permitting activities to support the FID. IGO also retains the right to explore for, develop and mine nickel and lithium minerals over the tenements. 'The company now turns its focus to the development of a new gold and copper producer in Western Australia,' managing director Paul Bennett said. 'Bringing the established high-grade gold-copper resources at Ravensthorpe together with the Forrestania plant and infrastructure can unlock significant value in the short term, with a substantial option on future growth from the new discovery potential of the tenure at both Ravensthorpe and Forrestania. 'Study work is at an advanced stage, permitting is being progressed as a priority and discussions continue to advance positively with offtake and finance parties.' The acquisition is subject to several conditions including MM8 preparing and announcing a feasibility study, entering into a binding unconditional debt facility agreement and/or funding commitments, and reaching FID on the project. Ravensthorpe project The ~300km2 Ravensthorpe project is centred on the historical Kundip mining centre midway between the regional centres of Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun. It benefits from excellent infrastructure and is easily accessed by sealed roads with a sealed airstrip 10km to the south of the project. Resources currently stand at 19.2Mt grading 2.1g/t gold and 0.3% copper for contained resources of 1.3Moz gold and 56,000t copper. A scoping study completed in December 2024 estimated the project could produce 336,000oz of gold and 13,000t of copper from a production inventory of 2.7Mt grading 3.9g/t Au and 0.6% Cu, over a mine life of 5.5 years. This will generate pre-tax free cash flow of $498m using a base case assumed gold price of $3615/oz and copper price of $5.54/lb, which increases to $637m at a gold price of $4000/oz and copper price of $6.15/lb. The Forrestania Nickel Operations and Ravensthorpe gold project. Pic: Medallion Metals Given that gold prices currently stand at about US$3352/oz ($5177.44/oz) while copper is priced about US$4.40/lb ($6.80/lb), these figures can be considered to be fairly conservative. Forecast average all-in-sustaining cost is estimated at just $1845/oz of gold inclusive of net by-product credits while total pre-production capex is expected to be about $73m including mine establishment and process plant modifications. Pre-tax NPV and IRR is estimated at $329m and 129% respectively in the base case with payback expected within just 12 months Establishment of the proven, industry standard process route of gravity-flotation-CIL at Forrestania is expected to deliver high gold recovery of 98% and copper recovery of 80%. MM8 notes there's plenty of upside as the initial production inventory represents just 44% of existing sulphide resource (gold) with existing shallow drilling indicating the potential for further mineralisation at depth. There is also potential for commercialisation of its oxide and transitional resources (10.3Mt at 1.6g/t gold for 520,000oz of contained gold). Next steps The company is currently working with IGO to finalise ancillary agreements and progress towards transaction finalisation and closure. It expects to release an updated resource estimate in August that incorporates the results of the recently completed 17,000m drill program along with metallurgical recovery and metal deportment assumptions that will inform the feasibility study. MM8 has also materially progressed process engineering associated with planned modifications to the Cosmic Boy flotation plant. It will now begin placing orders for long lead time items inclusive of a secondary ball mill. Additionally, the company has submitted all additional information requested by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water following its determination that the project will be assessed under preliminary documentation following its referral under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Work has also started on submissions under the Environmental Protection Act 1986 while negotiations with potential offtake and finance parties are ongoing with MM8 expecting to mandate a preferred offtake and finance partner to work on an exclusive basis to establish binding concentrate offtake terms and finance terms.
