Raising awareness on crop insurance among farmers is officials' duty, says DC Fouzia Taranum

The Hindu5 days ago
With the onset of the monsoon and sowing activities gaining pace, Deputy Commissioner of Kalaburagi, Fouzia Taranum, has directed officials to actively raise awareness among farmers about the importance of availing crop insurance under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).
Chairing a meeting of bank officials involved in crop loan disbursement at her office on Friday, Ms. Taranum stressed that educating farmers about the need for crop insurance is not just a recommendation but a responsibility for all banks that have issued agricultural loans.
'In Kalaburagi district, over three lakh farmers have received agricultural loans totalling ₹3,800 crore from various banks. Every one of these beneficiaries must be made aware of the benefits of crop insurance,' she said. 'The premium amount for crop insurance is minimal, but the protection it offers during unforeseen calamities is enormous. It is essential to convince all these farmers to enrol in the scheme by July 31 and achieve 100% coverage.'
She added that if officials and bankers fail to carry out the awareness drive and enrolment effectively, strict action would be initiated against them. 'Each bank and department must ensure that crop insurance details, particularly the major crops of the district, are disseminated at the taluk and gram panchayat levels, while other crop details should be shared at the hobli level,' she said.
For the 2025-26 Kharif season, IFFCO-Tokio General Insurance Company Ltd. has been appointed as the implementing insurance agency for the Kalaburagi district under the PMFBY.
Farmers seeking more information on the scheme can call the helpline number 1800-200-5142 or visit their nearest Raita Samparka Kendra or Assistant Director of Agriculture office.
Ms. Taranum also instructed the Agriculture Department to make full use of media channels to create mass awareness about crop insurance and ensure that farmers understand its benefits and procedures.
Joint Director of Agriculture, Samad Patel, and senior officials from various banks participated in the meeting.

Bapatla District Collector bans Black Burley tobacco cultivation for this year

In a significant move, Bapatla District Collector J. Venkata Murali has imposed a complete ban on the cultivation of Black Burley tobacco in the district for the current agricultural year, citing severe financial losses suffered by farmers in recent seasons. Chairing a review meeting at the Bapatla Collectorate on Wednesday with officials from MARKFED, the Agriculture Department, and private buyers, Mr. Murali said excessive cultivation—driven by unkept promises from companies—had led to market crashes, leaving farmers in distress. He warned that any violation of the ban, including nursery cultivation, would invite strict action, including destruction of crops. 'Even nursery cultivation of Black Burley tobacco is strictly prohibited,' he said, urging farmers to switch to more profitable alternatives. Reassuring farmers, the Collector said the government would stand by them and support those transitioning to sustainable crops. However, farmers who have already harvested Black Burley will be allowed to sell their produce to private buyers. He also cautioned growers against bringing tobacco with moisture content exceeding 20% to procurement centres and advised them to safeguard the crop from rain damage. Mr. Murali reaffirmed the administration's commitment to protecting farmer interests and assured procurement of every legally grown leaf this season.

Satellite survey to map crop types & boost yield

VIJAYAWADA: In a significant push to modernise agriculture, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has instructed officials to conduct a detailed satellite survey to map crop types across all survey numbers in the State. The directive came during an extensive four-hour review meeting on agriculture and allied sectors held at the Secretariat on Tuesday, where Naidu emphasised integrating field-collected data with satellite findings for accuracy. Citing a successful pilot project at Balabhadrapuram in East Godavari district, he urged aligning crop patterns regionally and providing continuous guidance and support to farmers through Rythu Seva Kendras. Post-land resurvey, he mandated the updating of revenue and agricultural records to reflect these changes, aiming to benefit ryots comprehensively. Naidu also greenlit the use of an AI chatbot to assist farmers with crop planning, value addition, and support, ensuring timely information dissemination. Officials reported that e-KYC for 47.41 lakh beneficiaries under the Annadata Sukhibhava scheme is complete, with Naidu directing the identification of eligible farmers via e-Crop for broader financial assistance. He announced plans for virtual meetings with water user associations to boost sector development and highlighted normal rainfall across most regions, except some southern coastal districts, during the Kharif season. With major projects in Krishna, Godavari, and Vamsadhara basins full and 9.90 lakh hectares under cultivation, he advocated advancing the crop calendar to mitigate storm and heavy rain risks, enabling a second crop cycle.
