EPA mulls rollback of landmark ‘forever chemicals' rule
The administration asked a federal appeals court for an additional 21 days to finalize a policy addressing 'the most significant compliance challenges' with the Biden-era drinking water regulation for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Chemical manufacturers and water utilities have sued to overturn the rule, raising questions about whether the Trump administration will defend it.
'A short additional abeyance period is appropriate to provide time for EPA to decide on its planned course of action and for the parties to evaluate the potential impact of EPA's announcement on the issues presented here and confer regarding how to proceed in this litigation,' EPA attorneys said in the new filing.

The rule sets legal limits for concentrations of six types of PFAS, a group of human-made chemicals that may increase people's risk of cancer and other serious illnesses. The chemicals have been found in roughly half the nation's tap water, and EPA has determined that some of the substances are unsafe even at very low levels.

Raw milk sickens 21 people in Florida including 6 children
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Six children are among 21 people who have E. coli or campylobacter infections after consuming raw milk from a farm in Florida, public health officials said. Seven people have been hospitalized, and at least two of them are suffering severe complications, the Florida Department of Health said Monday. It did not specify if any of the six infected children under 10 are among those being treated in hospitals, nor how many people were infected by E. coli, campylobacter or both bacteria. 'Sanitation practices in this farm are of particular concern due to the number of cases,' reads the state advisory, which did not identify the farm linked to the cluster of infections in northeast and central Florida. Raw milk appears to be gaining in popularity, despite years of warnings about the health risks of drinking unpasteurized products. The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say raw milk is one of the 'riskiest' foods people can consume. Raw milk is far more likely than pasteurized milk to cause illnesses and hospitalizations because of dangerous bacteria such as campylobacter, listeria, salmonella and E. coli, research shows. The infections can cause gastrointestinal illness, and in some cases may lead to serious complications, including a life-threatening form of kidney failure. Young children, the elderly, immunocompromised people and pregnant women are at greater risk of complications. 'We invented pasteurization for a reason,' said Keith Schneider, a food safety professor at the University of Florida. 'It's maddening that this is happening.' States have widely varying regulations regarding raw milk, with some allowing retail purchases in stores and others allowing sale only at farms. Some states allow 'cowshares,' in which customers buy milk produced by designated animals, and some allow consumption only by farm owners, employees or 'non-paying guests.' In Florida, the sale and distribution of raw milk for human consumption is illegal, but retailers get around the ban by labeling their products as for pet or animal food only. Schneider called it a 'wink, wink, nudge, nudge,' form of regulation. Joined by national and state Democratic leaders, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker accused President Donald Trump and Republicans of trying to cheat American democracy ahead of the 2026 midterm elections by redrawing Texas' congressional maps. The 60-year-old Illinois leader, a possible presidential contender, said Democratic governors cannot ignore Trump's aggressive steps, which under the Texas GOP plan would push as many as five House Democrats out of office. Such a move would provide national Republicans with a slightly heftier cushion next year to protect their slim majority in the House of Representatives as they prepare to defend Trump's agenda and other controversial moves. "Our constitution is under assault. Voting rights are being completely violated," he said. "Now is not the time for one party to play by the rules while the other party has completely ignored it." Earlier in the day, Trump, appearing on CNBC by telephone, said Republicans were "entitled" to the five new seats drafted by a Texas House committee on Aug. 2, and called out the group of Texas Democrats who fled to liberal-leaning states, saying those places have been using the same tactics when crafting their congressional districts. "Do you notice they go to Illinois for safety, but that's all gerrymandered," he said. "California is gerrymandered. We should have many more seats in Congress. It's all gerrymandered."
