What we know about VE Day celebrations for 80th anniversary of Second World War ending

Yahoo05-03-2025
Concerts, services and processions have been announced to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day in May this year.
The government said that four days of events have been planned for the anniversary, and urged people to celebrate with street parties.
Culture secretary Lisa Nandy said this year's anniversary offers 'important opportunities for communities to come together'.
She said the commemorations will be an opportunity to 'hear our veterans' stories first hand, to reflect and remember, and ensure that their stories of sacrifice and service are remembered for generations to come'.
The Together Coalition, which is organising the VEDay80 community campaign, have announced bank holiday street parties and barbecues will be organised – including a street party on the surviving warship HMS Belfast.
VE Day is on 8 May, which falls on a Thursday in 2025.
However, celebrations kick off on Monday, 5 May with events including a military procession and flypast in London, followed by community-focused activities like street parties across the country.
The commemorations will build toward the anniversary itself on 8 May.
The celebrations for VE Day kick off on the early May bank holiday on 5 May – but there will not be an extra bank holiday for the day itself.
There had been some suggestions that the government were planning on giving Britons an extra bank holiday on VE Day but that was quashed at the time.
The prime minister's spokesperson said in November that the VE Day plans 'do not include an additional bank holiday' – and this has not been announced in the planned commemorations.
As it's the 80th anniversary of VE Day this year, a whole host of events and celebrations are planned, spreading across four days.
Monday 5 May
Military procession from Whitehall to Buckingham Palace
Flypast of current and historic military aircraft including the Red Arrows
Street party on HMS Belfast
Country-wide street parties, barbecues and community get togethers
Tuesday 6 May
Installation of nearly 30,000 ceramic poppies at the Tower of London
Evening light-up of historic landmarks across the UK
Wednesday 7 May
Anniversary concert in Westminster Hall at the Palace of Westminster
Thursday 8 May (VE Day)
Service at Westminster Abbey
Concert for 10,000 members of the public at Horse Guards Parade in central London
The government has announced that street parties will be taking place – and have encouraged people to set up their own.
Brendan Cox, co-founder of the Together Coalition, which is organising the VEDay80 community campaign, said year's events offer 'a great opportunity to celebrate what we have in common, and to use the celebrations to reach out to neighbours, friends and our wider communities'.
Bank holiday street parties and barbecues will be organised by the coalition, and the first day of events includes a street party on the surviving warship HMS Belfast.
Bruno Peek, pageant master of the commemoration, said: 'We encourage everyone to take part – raise the VE Day flag at 9am, gather in streets, gardens, town halls, clubs and pubs. Let this be a day of joy, reflection, and celebration.'
VE Day stands for Victory in Europe Day and commemorates the moment when the Second World War came to an end in Europe.
On 8 May 1945 the Allied forces formally accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany, a surrender that silenced the guns across the continent after nearly six years of conflict.
VE Day marked a turning point that sparked jubilation from London's streets to rural villages across the country. Scenes from the day saw people dance, sing and wave flags, in a sign of patriotism and relief.
VE Day followed months of grueling battles, including the D-Day landings and the relentless advance through occupied territories, which finally broke the back of Hitler's regime.
On the 80th anniversary, VE Day still stands as a poignant reminder of the cost of freedom and the enduring legacy of a generation whose sacrifices paved the way for peace.

Prince George Was ‘The Star of the Room' at a Recent Royal Outing That Made His Parents ‘Very Proud'

As he continues learning about his future role as King of England, Prince George is taking it all in stride. He's embracing his destiny with enthusiasm and intelligence, which were both on display at a recent royal outing. Insiders revealed that the 12-year-old was the 'the star of the room' at an event, which made his parents 'very proud' — and it's clear that he's going to one day wear the crown with honor! Back in May, Prince George and his younger siblings Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, attended the 80th anniversary of VE Day in London with their parents Prince William and Kate Middleton. At the event, a D-Day veteran named Alfred Littlefield told Prince William, 'You should be very proud' after Prince George respectfully listened and asked lots of questions. More from SheKnows Princess Diana's Granddaughter Princess Charlotte Stole Her Whole Face in a Resurfaced Childhood Photo Another source at the event told Hello!, 'George was the star of the room,' the insider said. 'He was engrossed in conversation with many of the veterans, who were delighted to speak to him as well. He was enjoying it, hearing about guns and submarines and tanks.' Other family members, including the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal, were at the event too, and everyone seemed really supportive of George on this serious day. 'It was a safe, familiar place,' the source told the outlet. 'William and Kate were clearly trying to give him a good experience. They both appeared protective, putting an arm around him from time to time, but they looked very proud of him by the end.' Royal author Robert Hardman told the outlet, 'It's all part of a slow, incremental move towards his destiny.' 'They've always been very clear about pacing it, not making the children do anything that puts them off the idea of being royal in the future,' Hardman continued. 'It's a case of including him in things that he'll enjoy but that also touch on his life to come. George will one day be commander-in-chief of the armed forces and will almost certainly do a bit of time in one of the forces, so meeting veterans felt very appropriate.' This isn't the first time Prince George has shown an interest in military life. In September, he took a first flying lesson at White Waltham Airfield in Maidenhead, England, where an onlooker told The Sun, 'He loved it. It's the right time to start.' The insider added that the Prince and Princess of Wales seemed happy as they looked on from the ground. 'The Royal Family has a proud tradition of flying and it looks like George is next in line,' the source said, adding, 'His parents watched George take flight from the safety of the ground but he flew with an instructor and loved it.' He's sporty and adventurous, yet serious and smart when the need arises. And, of course, charming at all times. Blame Pornhub for Britain's Age-Check Internet Mess

If love makes the world go round, then porn keeps the internet spinning. But many of the 14 million Britons who watch online porn are grappling with new requirements on sites like Pornhub to check their age. Many have signed petitions and flocked to VPNs, or virtual private networks, to evade a new British law aimed at protecting children and adults from harmful online content. Critics of Britain's Online Safety Act call the rules bureaucratic pearl clutching and invasive, political overreach. That's hogwash. While the Act isn't perfect, it is more flexible and privacy-friendly than laws elsewhere that forced adult sites to check ages. Go on Pornhub in the UK and there are several options to check you're over 18, from giving your credit card details to sharing an email address or mobile number. 1

Prince George turns 12: See the new video with Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis

Prince George, the heir to the British throne and the eldest child of Prince William and Kate, is 12. George was born on July 22, 2013, at St Mary's Hospital in London. On his 12th birthday Tuesday, William and Kate shared a new photo of George on social media, as well as a video of George playing with his two siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. The photo of George, taken by photographer Josh Shinner, shows the young prince dressed in a collared shirt and brown vest with his arms resting on a fence outside. The video shows more photos of George outside near the fence and laughing and playing wiht his siblings, whose gigles can be heard in the accompanying audio. "12 today! 🎉," the video's caption reads. Like his younger siblings, George attends Lambrook School, a prep school for children ages 3-13 that is located near the family's home in Windsor, England. George was most recently seen publicly attending the men's final at Wimbledon on July 13, alongside his parents and Charlotte. Earlier this summer, George was joined by Charlotte and Louis while attending commemorations in London for the 80th anniversary of VE Day -- Victory in Europe Day -- which marks the anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. The Wales siblings joined their parents William and Kate and other members of Britain's royal family at the event.
