Roger Nichols, songwriter behind the Carpenters' hits, dead at 84
Nichols' death on May 17 was confirmed in a social media post from Nichols' longtime songwriting partner, Paul Williams. He did not list a cause of death.
'The first song Roger Nichols and I wrote was called 'It's hard to say goodbye …' Sadly, we hit the nail on the head. Roger Nichols passed away peacefully four days ago, at home with his beautiful family,' Williams wrote. 'His wife Terry and the daughters he was so proud of, Claire and Caitlin at his side.
'He was as disciplined as he was talented,' Williams continued. 'The words were born of the beauty in his completed melodies. I wrote what I heard, note for note …word for word. The lyrics waiting in the emotion already in his music. He made it easy.'
Nichols, a Montana native, released his first solo LP, 'Roger Nichols & the Small Circle of Friends,' on A&M Records in 1968. It's now regarded as a cult classic in the California pop-rock canon, with guest credits from Randy Newman, Van Dyke Parks and Lenny Waronker. However, he earned his big break as a songwriter after he penned an unexpectedly poignant jingle for a Crocker-Citizens National Bank commercial.
Richard Carpenter, who formed the popular duo with his sister Karen, heard the tune on television and asked if Nichols and Williams had a full version of the song. They quickly extended it into a tune that became the duo's 1970 smash 'We've Only Just Begun.' The single was nominated for song of the year at the following Grammys.
With Williams (and other lyricists), Nichols co-wrote many of the Carpenters' most beloved songs, including 'Rainy Days and Mondays,' 'I Won't Last a Day Without You,' 'Let Me Be the One' and 'I Kept on Loving You.' Beyond his hits for the Carpenters, Nichols co-wrote songs that were recorded by the Monkees, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Petula Clark and Art Garfunkel, among many others.
In a comment on Williams' post, Nichols' daughter Claire wrote, 'My mom, Terri, and my sisters, Caroline and Caitlin, are all so proud of the man he was, and are in awe of the legacy he leaves.'

Pokemon Legends: Z-A Gives Us First Look at Mega Dragonite, Wild Mega Evolutions
Pokemon Legends: Z-A is bringing back mega evolutions, the battle gimmick that first appeared in the X and Y games, but is also bringing us new twists, including brand-new mega evolutions. A recent Pokemon Presents video walked us through a few different features of the game, including the new and returning mechanics from the series' last romp through Lumiose City. Mega evolution, which allows you to temporarily evolve certain Pokemon if they're equipped with a corresponding stone, is coming back in Legends: Z-A, alongside trainer customization. But we're also getting a few updates to the battle mechanic from Gen 6. Here's what we've learned about the game so far. Pokemon Legends: Z-A release date Legends: Z-A will be available Thursday, Oct. 16 on Switch and Switch 2. Z-A adds new mega evolutions and rogue mega evolutions Mega evolutions were a focal point of the X and Y story, and a big part of the competitive scene until Gen 7 came out. X and Y introduced 28 mega evolutions, with another 20 coming in the Gen 3 remakes, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Mega evolution allows you to give even fully evolved Pokemon a temporary stat boost, a new ability and sometimes even a type change. Legends: Z-A is adding to the list of megas, prominently featuring the new Mega Dragonite in the trailer. No details yet on whether Mega Dragonite has a change in type or what its new ability is, but I would guess it has something to do with the eight different wings all over its body. The Pokemon Company/Screenshot by CNET The other big change with mega evolution is the addition of rogue mega evolutions -- wild Pokemon that are able to mega evolve on their own. It's an interesting change from the Gen 6 games, where mega evolutions were only encountered in battles against gym leaders and similarly powerful trainers. Legends: Z-A brings back Lumiose City's fashion scene, detective work In Pokemon X and Y, trainers could shop at various cities to customize their attire, from hats and hoodies to socks, shoes and skirts. You could also change your hairstyle by visiting salons. That kind of customization is back in Legends: Z-A, as the trailer showed its trainer in a variety of styles ranging from sporty to chic. Sign me up for new styles in different Lumiose districts. The Pokemon Company/Screenshot by CNET Part of X and Y's postgame content was the Looker Detective Agency, where players could help a Lumiose City detective investigate some mysteries. Players will get to work with Emma, "the best detective in Lumiose," and seemingly the grown-up version of a child who featured prominently in the Looker Bureau missions in X and Y. The Pokemon Company/Screenshot by CNET Detective work in Legends Z-A appears to be a system for accepting quests from people around the city who need help with their problems, like trash Pokemon hanging out on restaurant tables outside. Other Pokemon staples return, like a Pokemon researcher, Mable, who needs you to catch Pokemon to help with her research, and a shady criminal organization -- in this case, Corbeau and his Rust Syndicate. Overall, Legends Z-A seems to be leaning into the city life of Lumiose, which could be a fun flavor for the game. But more than anything else, I hope we'll see more new mega evolutions and other expansions to returning mechanics. Bonus: New Pokemon Champions info Today's Pokemon Presents also gave us some new details on Pokemon Champions, the upcoming battle-focused game that will be available on both Switch and mobile devices. The game seems to be pretty exclusively a battle simulator, and we've now learned that it allows you to pull in your teams from Pokemon Home or recruit new Pokemon either temporarily for free or permanently by using in-game currency. Try out Pokemon for a week for free, or recruit them permanently for a cost. The Pokemon Company/Screenshot by CNET You can also train your Pokemon within Champions, allowing you to adjust competitive-focused stats like individual values and effort values, which affect stat numbers, and natures, which boost one stat and lower another. The Pokemon games have made a lot of changes to make training easier and less time-consuming, and this appears to be another step in that direction, though I have several questions about the in-game currency and how players can earn it. The trailer showed moving stat points from one stat to another, at a cost. The Pokemon Company/Screenshot by CNET Pokemon Champions will be available sometime next year, with no precise release date set. I wonder if this will be an attempt to split the competitive scene from the mainline games, making it easier for people to collect and train Pokemon for competition and removing the pressure of robust competitive systems from the mainline games. Jessica Williams returns to 'The Daily Show' to roast Trump
"The Daily Show" is welcoming back a familiar face. Host Jon Stewart threw cameras mid-monologue to Jessica Williams, a famed alum of the political satire program, on Monday, July 28. Williams, fresh off an Emmy nod for her role in Apple TV+'s "Shrinking," served as a regular correspondent on "The Daily Show" from 2012 to 2016. Back at her old stomping ground, Williams, 35, took aim at President Donald Trump, joking that he was using notable Black people to distract from a refusal to release the "Epstein Files." "Trump is trying to throw every Black person he can think (of) in front of the scandal to distract us," Williams quipped. "First, he released the Martin Luther King Jr. files. Then he accused Obama of treason. And now he wants to prosecute Oprah and Beyoncé?" How did new 'Daily Show' host do? Our quick take on Josh Johnson's debut Williams' comments come as the Trump administration continues to weather a scandal over the investigation into convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Throughout his run for office, the president speculated that the government was withholding key evidence after the financier died by suicide in a New York jail cell before making it to trial. Now in office, however, the president has opted not to release further information, and the Department of Justice has maintained that there was no elusive "client list," with notable names who associated with Epstein. The move has angered some of Trump's most loyal supporters, and provided fodder for over a week of late-night monologues. Trump, Williams joked, was targeting "all of our greatest Black people," in order to distract from the scandal. "Who's next? Michael Jordan? Michael B. Jordan? Michael C. Jordan?" she continued. "We're about a week away from him saying that Urkel did 9/11. Urkel? Did he do that?" She then wondered aloud if she would be next, quipping that recent Emmy nominations might just make her famous enough to be a target. Williams, who has since ventured into more serious dramatic roles, occasionally swings by "The Daily Show" to remind audiences of her comedic prowess. Rusev just doesn't stand out at all in today's WWE
Some places do power rankings. Here at Cageside, we do a stock report. In this weekly series, we identify three Superstars (or groups of Superstars) who are on their way up, and three that are moving in the opposite direction. After a busy week that included Becky Lynch's proposal for Lyra Valkyria, Roman Reigns addressing Paul Heyman's betrayal, and Jelly Roll standing in the ring while Logan Paul runs into him, a lot of fortunes were changed. With that in mind, let's see whose stock decreased the most this week: On this week's episode of Raw, Rusev took his first singles loss since returning to WWE three months ago, falling victim to a Brogue Kick from Sheamus. Rusev has only had a handful of matches since coming back to WWE, and he's made close to no impact on the product. His work is fine, but watching him and Sheamus do battle does sort of seem like it's a time warp back to a decade ago, and I don't think that's a good thing. Nothing really stands about Rusev's gimmick today that seems like it's going to catch on and warrant a big push over the current crop of stars on the WWE roster. A-Town Down Under abruptly broke up this week after what felt like at least one full year of their story going nowhere. The official split happened in a backstage segment on Raw where Grayson Waller tried to align himself with the New Day after saying he was glad to finally have the 'dead weight' of the injured Theory off his back. Just like that, Waller has a new creative direction in WWE, while the guy who beat John Cena at WrestleMania 39 has never been more irrelevant. The megastar is nowhere to be seen on WWE programming since losing in a gauntlet match on the July 14 episode of Raw. His absence is tied into the strange circumstances surrounding Seth Rollins' knee injury. The bottom line is that WWE creative has nothing for LA right now, and it looks like he won't be booked in a match at SummerSlam. Now let's see whose stock increased the most this week: Kross is finally gaining traction on Raw as part of a program with Sami Zayn. Their feud is even getting a spotlight on the SummerSlam card, which is a pretty big deal for Karrion. There are a lot of rumors and reports about Kross' WWE contract status, and it's happening at a good time as more fans are rallying behind him. After being gone from WWE for over one year, Kiana James returned to SmackDown in a managerial role of sorts for Women's United States Champion Giulia. This is a very good spot for James to land in, because it should guarantee regular TV time for her during Giulia's current push. James would likely be lost in the shuffle in the women's division otherwise, but this spot gives her a good chance to show off her talking skills and get fans invested in her character. The build to SummerSlam has generally been rushed and underwhelming, but one of the bright spots is the angle between Styles and Mysterio. The comedy of Styles hanging around backstage in disguise to keep an eye on the cowardly Mysterio has been very effective at building interest in their Intercontinental title match at WWE's biggest party of the summer.
