The top US states for a golfing holiday
Home to more than 40 per cent of the world's golf courses, if you're looking to hit that hallowed hole-in-one, there's no better place than America. Challenging fairways, sensational vistas and the chance to tread the same turf as the greatest golfers in history, the US golf scene is unbeatable. Check out these states for your next golfing holiday.
Florida
Soaked in sunshine and with more courses than any other state, it's easy to see why Florida is one of the most popular golfing destinations in America. It's home to big hitters like TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, which hosts The Players Championship. In Orlando, the ChampionsGate Country Club and its 18-hole International Course, designed by Greg Norman, is a popular choice, not least because it's a 15-minute drive from Walt Disney World.
The sweeping shores of the Gulf Coast are equally blessed, particularly in Naples, which has almost a hundred courses. Don't miss a round or two at Tiburón Golf Club, which has two 18-hole championship courses, Black and Gold.
While you're there… Visit the Everglades National Park and come nose to snout or beak with alligators, pink-hued roseate spoonbills and American bald eagles.
California
The Hollywood of America's golfing scene, California, has a star-studded appeal. One of the most scenic courses is Pebble Beach Golf Links on the Monterey Peninsula. It's regularly ranked as one of the world's best, thanks to the incredible ocean views from every hole.
The clifftop location of Torrey Pines in San Diego is another favourite of golf fans, not least because it was where Tiger Woods had his heroic US Open win in 2008. It's also a swing away from nature reserves, beaches and the San Diego Zoo.
Palm Springs is renowned for its golfing scene. PGA WEST has nine courses, including the Pete Dye-designed TPC Stadium Course, which has dramatic bunkers and the notorious 'Alcatraz' island green.
While you're there... Go wine tasting in Napa Valley. Hire a bike or hop aboard the Napa Valley Wine Trolley to taste your way around California's greatest wineries.
Arizona
Cavernous canyons, rugged red rocks, giant saguaro cacti … the courses in Arizona have a Wild West vibe. One of the most popular is TPC Scottsdale, famous for the Stadium Course, which has the 'Coliseum', a grandstand with a bird's-eye view of the 16th hole.
Alternatively, you can tee off at Troon North Golf Club in the Sonoran Desert near Scottsdale, where the rolling fairways run through the ravines and granite boulders of Pinnacle Peak. And don't miss SunRidge Canyon, which snakes through canyons and ridges with views that'll make you miss your shot as you soak it all in.
While you're there… Visit the Grand Canyon. Hike one of the many trails of the South Rim or take the Desert View Drive at sunset, a scenic 25-mile stretch from Grand Canyon Village.
North Carolina
With blue-tinged mountains, Gilded Age mansions and stacks of Southern charm, it's easy to see why North Carolina attracts the more discerning golfer. Top of the league is Pinehurst Resort in Sandhills, which has 10 courses, including Pinehurst No. 2, the Donald Ross-designed course, which has hosted the most single-course championships than any other course in America.
Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte is another classic course, which hosted the PGA Championship 2025 in May. Famous for its terrifying final three holes, which members call the Green Mile, it sent Masters champion Rory McIlroy home early this year.
Luckily for Rory, there's plenty to do in the state, from the Biltmore Estate in Asheville to the beautiful beaches of the Outer Banks.
While you're there… Hit the Blue Ridge Parkway, hailed as 'America's favourite drive'. Stop off for a hike along the Appalachian Trail or go wine-tasting in Hendersonville wine country.
Wisconsin
From the Ryder Cup to the US Open, Wisconsin is a magnet for big-name golf tournaments. Golfers from all around the world come to pay homage at Brown Deer Park, Milwaukee, where Tiger Woods made his professional debut.
Another historic course is Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, which was the first public course in a generation to host the Ryder Cup. Designed by Pete Dye, this challenging course overlooking Lake Michigan also held the PGA Championship three times and the US Senior Open.
Beyond the greens, Wisconsin has plenty to offer, from historic state parks and the Frank Lloyd Wright Trail to an extensive craft brewery scene.
While you're there... check out the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee. The all-American motorcycle brand is an icon of Wisconsin and a must-visit for Hog fans.

Florida resort that faced hurricanes to be demolished and rebuilt
By An iconic resort that faced the brunt of back-to-back hurricanes will be demolished and rebuilt, sparking concern that the decades-old Florida staple will lose its nostalgic charm. The Thunderbird Beach Resort, located west of St. Petersburg on Treasure Island, sustained severe damage during Hurricanes Helene and Milton - which both caused widespread devastation last year. With roughly 80 percent of the retro-styled beachfront hotel decimated, its owners were left with no choice but to make the distressing call. 'Sadly, the back-to-back hurricanes that struck our coast last year caused catastrophic damage to the property,' owners Avi & Gilad Ovaknin wrote in a statement in April. 'After extensive evaluations and much deliberation, we were left with no choice but to move forward with a full redevelopment of the hotel.' The Ovaknins added they were 'heartbroken by the loss' of the flagship structure, which has been a coveted family-friendly vacation spot since it opened in 1957, but will do their best to preserve its 'heart, soul, and charm.' Thunderbird guests were also disheartened by the news, but were ultimately relieved that the hotel would be rebuilt. Another user said he hoped developers would be able to keep some of the resort's trademark features, including its unmistakable neon sign and the Thunderbird painted on the bottom of one of its pools. 'I do hope that along with the original signage, that you will put another Thunderbird in the pool,' he wrote. 'I have been coming there since the 1960's and both the big sign and the Thunderbird in the pool always thrilled me as a child.' Someone claimed they have stayed at the resort every time they visited Treasure Island for the past decade. She added she knows 'it won't be the same sweet 1950's style motel' but is optimistic for the new design. 'This just breaks my heart, but I hope what you build honors the historical nature, and has character - well being safer, and more resistant to future flooding,' another added. Hundreds of people have been sharing their fond memories of their relaxing getaways spent swimming in the Thunderbird's two heated pools and getting drinks at its popular tiki bar. Originally, the resort was called the Thunderbird Motel. It consisted of 64 rooms and cost $750,000 to build, St. Pete Rising reported. It became the Thunderbird Beach Resort around 2006, the according to StPeteCatalyst , and grew to 106 hotel rooms throughout two and three story buildings. When developers first drew up plans for the hotels post-hurricane makeover, the design included the same number of rooms, but in one four-story building. These plans included U-shaped structure with three levels sitting atop a 124-sqaure-foot parking garage and featuring a 1,750-square-foot lobby and office area. But since sharing that design in April, the owners have expressed intent to grow Thunderbird into an even larger resort. 'Putting 106 units on this land doesn't really pencil out,' Gilad told St. Pete Rising. 'In order to justify [the development], it's going to require a little bit more units.' He hopes to drastically expand the vacation spot to 160 or 170 units, Thunderbird Beach Resort Manager Donna Jollimore told the outlet. Although the city's code technically does not allow for the new hotel to exceed its previous 106 rooms, Treasure Island board members have been supportive of the massive change. 'It's ok to bring us some stuff that's outside the box. Because if you look around, we need it. We can't live the way that we have for the last 30 years,' alternate board member Mark Zdrojewski said. 'You can put a Ferris wheel on top and I'd probably say yes.' The Treasure Island Board said it is actively working with the Ovaknins' owners to make these expansive dreams come true. Increasing the room count may require a provision in the city's plan, St. Pete Rising reported. The timeline for the demolition and exact rebuild plans remains unclear, but owners have eased some worries by declaring the trademark neon sign will remain. 'Our new plans reflect a thoughtful balance of preservation and progress. While the structure and layout will evolve, the spirit of the Thunderbird will live on,' they wrote.

People are just realizing the most disgusting secret about Carnival Poop Cruise came AFTER the Netflix special
Various TikTokers have posted videos of themselves realizing that they inadvertently went on the infamous 'Poop Cruise' featured on the recent Netflix documentary years after the actual disaster. The revolting TV episode released Tuesday catalogued from start to finish the doomed voyage of the Carnival Triumph in February 2013. The ship was meant to embark on a four day sojourn out of New Orleans, Louisiana throughout the Gulf of Mexico. But, on day four, an electrical fire broke out and engulfed the ship's electrical cables in flames. Those cables powered its entire electrical system including the power, refrigeration, propulsion, air conditioning and the power to flush the toilets. What came next was five days of utter anarchy, characterized by open sewage flooding onto the decks, people having sex out in the open, and fights over a waning food supply. However, at the end of the documentary, it was revealed that this cursed ship was not actually retired from Carnival's fleet. Instead, the company spent $115million to clean and repair the ship. Then, it was renamed 'Sunrise' and has been in service ever since. One content creator, Sarah Elizabeth, posted pictures of her June 2022 cruise and showed that she had in fact sailed on the Carnival Sunrise. The Netflix documentary covered the disaster that was the 2013 voyage of the Carnival Triumph (pictured) with a disturbing amount of detail 'Just watched this on @Netflix and realized the first cruise we EVER went on in 2022 was in fact the infamous POOP CRUISE. I'm dead. Hahah,' she wrote in the caption of the TikTok video. Another TikToker, Thomas Adrianna, said she sailed on the Sunrise in 2024 out of the ship's home port in Miami. 'Guess what boat I was on last year. The Carnival Sunrise. On top of that, our boat actually flooded the day before our cruise and we still went because they claimed that our floor wasn't affected. Y'all I can't believe they had us on that s****y a** boat,' she said. A third woman who went on Sunrise with her family posted a rapid slideshow of her experiences on the ship. The comments on these videos ranged from people sharing their own experiences on the Sunrise, good and bad, to others asking if the ship still smelled. 'Can't convince me they were able to clean the dookie out of every crevice,' one person commented. Daily Mail approached Carnival for comment and received a statement that said: 'Carnival Triumph, like two other ships in the same class, was renamed after a $200million bow-to-stern transformation. The ship re-emerged with major upgrades and enhancements as Carnival Sunrise in 2019 - six years after the 2013 incident. This was also well publicized and celebrated at the time, with a naming ceremony that took place in New York City.' The Netflix documentary was released on Tuesday as an episode in the running Netflix series 'Trainwreck,' which has looked at several different disasters. Past episodes covered the crowd crush at Travis Scott's Astroworld Festival and Woodstock '99, a music festival in upstate New York tainted by sexual violence and inadequate sanitation. Viewers of the 'Poop Cruise' episode were particularly horrified at how quickly social order broke down once it became clear the ship wasn't going anywhere. Makeshift tent cities sprang up because there was no air conditioning in the ship. People dragged their mattresses out to the top and used their sheets to create shade for themselves. This mad dash led to fights over space on the deck. When it came to the crew's request for people to poop in bags because the toilets weren't working, viewers were outraged that some passengers felt they were above doing that. This, of course, led to toilets overflowing onto the decks and creating a stench so horrific that people reported being unable to stand being in the interior of the ship. Help finally arrived for them on Valentine's Day - February 14, 2013. Tug boats ushered the floundering ship for the Gulf to a nearby port in Mobile, Alabama, miles away from the cruise's original docking point. Carnival's statement to Daily Mail concluded: 'The Carnival Triumph incident over 12 years ago was a teachable moment for the entire cruise industry. A thorough investigation following the incident revealed a design vulnerability which was corrected and led Carnival Cruise Line to invest more than $500million across our entire fleet in comprehensive fire prevention and suppression, improved redundancy, and enhanced management systems, all in support of our commitment to robust safety standards. 'This is in addition to our vigorous Health, Environmental, Safety and Security (HESS) protocols that guide the entire Carnival Corporation fleet as we maintain our commitment to industry leadership in this area. We are proud of the fact that since 2013 over 53 million guests have enjoyed safe and memorable vacations with us, and we will continue to operate to these high standards.'
