Congress MLA Aradhana Misra backs protest against Banke Bihari Corridor

Agra: Congress MLA and Legislature Party Leader in the UP Assembly, Aradhana Misra, on Friday extended support to members of the Goswami community and locals Congress MLA and Legislature Party Leader in the UP Assembly, Aradhana Misra, on Friday extended support to members of the Goswami community and locals protesting the proposed Banke Bihari Corridor in Vrindavan.
After visiting the temple, the Rampur Khas MLA said, "I am saddened that the Goswami families, descendants of Swami Haridas, are protesting. The Banke Bihari Temple and Vrindavan are part of the living traditions and faith of the Hindu community."
She added, "No one is against Vrindavan's development, but its originality and divinity must not be disturbed. The Congress will raise this issue in the Vidhan Sabha and fully support the protest against the corridor, which has been brought without consulting locals."
The protest has been ongoing for over a month, triggered by the formation of the Shri Banke Bihari Ji Mandir Nyas Trust following a Supreme Court ruling on May 15 that approved the ₹500 crore redevelopment project. The 18-member trust — comprising 11 nominated and seven ex-officio members, including two from the Goswami community — will oversee temple rituals, priest appointments, devotee safety, and construction of the corridor.
While the state govt says the trust will preserve religious practices, the Shebaits, who have managed the temple since 1862, fear their traditional authority is being undermined. Locals believe that around 275 families, including 200 shopkeepers, may be displaced. Flats in Rukmini Vihar and Sunrakh Bangar have been earmarked for rehabilitation, with compensation and alternate shop space promised.
The project gained momentum after a stampede-like incident during Janmashtami celebrations in 2022 killed two devotees. In September 2023, the Allahabad High Court directed the state to implement a corridor plan to improve crowd safety and access. Following local backlash, CM Yogi Adityanath's adviser, Awanish Kumar Awasthi, has begun consultations with priests, residents, and traders.

Who was Sewdass Sadhu, mentioned by PM Modi in Trinidad & Tobago speech?

Addressing a large gathering of the Indian diaspora in Port of Spain, Trinidad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned several eminent personalities with Indian roots, including the mathematician and politician Dr Rudranath Capildeo (1920-70), the Trinidadian musician, 'King of Chutney' Sundar Popo, and the former West Indies batsman Daren Ganga. Modi also mentioned the somewhat lesser-known Sewdass Sadhu, an indentured labourer who is credited with single-handedly building the famous 'Temple in the Sea' in the Gulf of Paria, the shallow body of water between the island of Trinidad and Venezuela in the South American mainland. We look at the story of Sewdass Sadhu, sometimes called the Dashrath Majhi of Trinidad & Tobago. Also known as Sewdass Sadhu Shiva Mandir, the temple off Waterloo, Carapichaima, south of Port of Spain, was first constructed in 1955. The temple, surrounded by the scenic waters of the Gulf of Paria, is connected to land by a walkway, somewhat like the Haji Ali dargah in Mumbai. The 85-foot Hanuman statue at the Dattatreya temple in Carapichaima stands nearby. The Sewdass Sadhu Shiva Mandir is a spiritual and cultural landmark that attracts pilgrims and visitors from around the world. It has classic Hindu architectural features like domed mandaps, colourful gopurams (entrance towers that are a distinctive feature of Dravidian temple architecture), and ornate ceiling designs. The temple becomes a vibrant hub during religious celebrations in the country, which has a significant Hindu population with Indian roots, especially during festivals like Diwali. The Sadhu who built it Sewdass Sadhu had constructed the first temple on the seashore in 1947, but it was demolished because it was built in MacMillan Park, a private property belonging to Tate and Lyle Limited, a leading sugar company, and Sadhu was sent to prison. But he was determined to build the temple, and subsequently built it the sea, arguing that the water does not belong to any one individual. He did this alone, over 25 long years, using only his bicycle to transport building material to the site where an octagonal, one-storey temple finally came up. Sewdass Sadhu's story echoes that of Dashrath Majhi, the 'Mountain Man' of Bihar, who worked for 22 years with only a hammer and chisel to singlehandedly carve a path through rocks to connect his village Gehlaur to the city of Gaya. The diaspora connect Indian-origin people make up almost 40 per cent of the population of Trindad and Tobago. About half of all Indo-Trinidadians are Hindu; the rest are Muslim, Christian, Buddhist and Sikh. The first Indians arrived in the islands in 1845, mainly from Bhojpur and Awadh regions in today's Bihar and Uttar Pradesh respectively, as indentured labourers. In 2025, T&T is celebrating 180 years of the arrival of Indians. During his address, Prime Minister Modi announced that OCI cards would now be issued to the 6th generation of the people of Indian origin in Trinidad & Tobago. He also underscored that the Indian government will support several initiatives to nurture the Girmitiya legacy. ‘Jihadi, anti-Hindu': How BJP described Raj, Uddhav Thackeray's reunion at joint rally

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray and MNS head Raj Thackeray appeared together publicly for the first time in 20 years. They united in opposition to what they called the Maharashtra government's alleged enforcement of the Hindi language in the state, reported PTI. Following their reunion, a few leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party have called out the joint rally, stating that it is a measure for 'public appeasement' and an 'anti-Hindu gathering.' Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar criticised Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena for their joint rally in Mumbai on Saturday, calling it a "public appeasement" campaign aimed at elections rather than a genuine event for language issues. Ashish Shelar, in a post on the social media platform X, condemned the Shiv Sena (UBT), saying, "This isn't about language... It's a public appeasement campaign for elections! With the municipal elections approaching, the panicked Ubatha Sena (a mocking term for Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena) has suddenly remembered 'brotherhood.' He further added, "Today's so-called family get-together in Worli was a public appeasement event for the very brother they once threw out of the house. There is no real love for language involved here... and they've never truly cared for it anyway! This is nothing but a desperate scramble to regain power in the municipal corporation, so they can once again loot Mumbai. Mr. Uddhav Thackeray's handshake with Raj Thackeray is nothing but 'Trying to win the family truce because they know they'll lose the election!' Meanwhile Minister Nitesh Rane slammed both Raj and Uddhav Thackeray for the joint rally in Mumbai, terming it as a "jihadi and anti-Hindu gathering" aimed at dividing society and weakening the state. 'We are Hindus and also proud Marathi. The way jihadis attempt to divide our society, these people are doing the same. Be it (banned) Popular Front of India (PFI) or Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) who work against the idea of a Hindu Rashtra, these two (Thackerays) are no different. They are trying to weaken the state,' PTI quoted Rane while he was speaking to the reporters on Friday. The BJP leader said, 'The Worli meeting is aimed at dividing Hindus and Marathi people. It can be equated with the rallies of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), PFI or SIMI. It will cause the biggest damage to Hindus in the state. It is an anti-Hindu rally."

Release job notifications, demand unemployed youth in Telangana

HYDERABAD: Demanding the release of all pending job notifications and payment of unemployment allowance , members of the Telangana Nirudyoga JAC on Friday tried to gherao the Secretariat. Backed by various student organisations, the unemployed youth warned that they would organise a massive dharna if the state govt failed to release at least a few notifications before the panchayat elections. "It is because of unemployed youth that the Congress govt has come to power. Now, they are least bothered to fulfil the promises made to the unemployed youth. The govt is completely neglecting us by delaying job opportunities. If they don't release at least a couple of notifications before the panchayat election dates are announced, the youth will teach them a lesson in the polls," said Umesh Madipeddi from the JAC, adding that a curfew-like situation prevailed at RTC Crossroads and near the Secretariat to foil ' Chalo Secretariat ' programme. They alleged that tens of unemployed youth and student leaders were picked up by police on Thursday night to prevent them from reaching the Secretariat. "The govt should implement the job calendar and issue notifications for jobs, fill all vacant positions in govt departments. It should focus on issuing job notifications with the same attention it shows in making arrests," said Anaganti Venkatesh, state secretary, DYFI. He claimed that over 200 people were picked up by the police. Meanwhile, the police said that though a large number of people tried to reach the Secretariat, only 10 of them were successful, as others were picked up from different locations to prevent them from participating in the 'Chalo Secretariat' programme. "The ten people, who reached the Secretariat, were also picked up," police added.
