Wild's home will have new name for first time in 2025-26: Grand Casino Arena
ST. PAUL, Minn. — As the Minnesota Wild usher in their 25th anniversary season, their home arena will take on a new name for the first time in franchise history. The organization announced Monday that Xcel Energy Center will be renamed Grand Casino Arena in the fall. The Wild worked with Oak View Group to help with the sale of their naming rights and connected with dozens of potential partners. In the end, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, which founded Grand Casino Mille Lacs and Hinckley in the early 90s, agreed to a 14-year partnership. Advertisement 'We love the fact that Grand Casino is local and has been part of our community for decades,' Wild CEO Matt Majka told The Athletic. 'We are thrilled to go forward with them.' Sept. 3 is the targeted date for the official name change. That would give time for the exterior signage to be manufactured and attached to the arena and for the new website to go live. The first event of Grand Casino Area is scheduled to be a Jason Aldean concert Sept. 6. Xcel Energy, a Minneapolis-based company, held the naming rights to the arena since 2000. It will continue to be a sponsor of the Wild and have a presence in the arena and provide grants to youth and high school organizations. The new agreement with Grand Casino will provide it with substantial exposure and programming throughout the arena and obviously on the exterior. 'It will be our largest and most pervasive sponsorship in terms of recognition and profile and presence,' Majka said. 'Xcel Energy will continue to be a very significant partner. We recently announced a long-term renewal with them as an ongoing corporate partner, and we're incredibly appreciative of the long-standing partnership we've had with them and thrilled that it's going to continue.' Draymond Green calls Cooper Flagg lucky to land with the Dallas Mavericks: "You ain't gotta go average 25 points on a bad team"
Draymond Green calls Cooper Flagg lucky to land with the Dallas Mavericks: "You ain't gotta go average 25 points on a bad team" originally appeared on Basketball Network. On his recent podcast, Draymond Green weighed in on the NBA's biggest story this week: the Dallas Mavericks selecting Duke's Cooper Flagg as the first pick in the 2025 Draft. Advertisement Green's reaction? While many praise the Mavs for hitting gold, the 35-year-old sees it both ways. In his view, Flagg is a "lucky man" to have landed with that particular franchise, adding, "I don't think he could have asked for anything better as the number one pick." Flagg joins a loaded Mavs team Typically, the NBA draft lottery favors struggling teams with poor records, giving them top picks to rebuild. However, this year, the Mavericks — who finished 39-43 and nearly made the playoffs — landed the number one pick, raising eyebrows and fueling conspiracy theories. It's certainly not common for a number one pick to join that kind of franchise, but as Golden State Warriors' Green pointed out, it's definitely not negative for Flagg, a highly talented 6'8" forward. Advertisement Dray, for instance, highlighted that Coop's new team, which made the 2024 NBA Finals, already boasts a strong roster. For the reigning national college player of the year, joining a competitive side instead of a rebuilding one offers clear advantages. "You ain't gotta go average 25 points on a bad team or 20 points on a bad team," Green said. Of course, the NBA veteran — like everyone else — knows that a player picked that highly faces intense pressure, no matter the situation. Yet, according to "Day-Day," in Texas, "The Maine Event" will have "great vets" to help shoulder that. "You get to go compete and learn from some of the best, you know, so I think that's great," emphasized the four-time NBA champion. Inside Dallas' roster puzzle The Mavericks, coached by Hall of Famer Jason Kidd, have been quite successful in recent years, and that will be valuable for Flagg, said Green. Equally important to the young player's development, according to the 2017 DPOY, is how "great" the organization is. Advertisement "A lot of times, when you're the number one pick, you go to a shitty organization," the Michigan native said. "This time, it's going to a great organization." That's certainly a bold claim, given the team's February trade when General Manager Nico Harrison sent franchise cornerstone — at least many thought so — Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for an aging, injury-prone Anthony Davis. Although there is still backlash, the controversial move ultimately secured the top draft pick, which brought Flagg, who averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game in his one-and-done college season, to Dallas. The final topic Green and his co-host, former NBA player Baron Davis, discussed was how the Mavericks' newest addition would fit into their starting five. Advertisement Dray believes Coop isn't a wing player and won't slide to small forward. Meanwhile, he said Davis prefers playing power forward over center — an apparent clash of roles between the two. Dallas also has traditional big men Dereck Lively and Daniel Gafford up front. The 2017 steals leader called that roster setup "interesting" in terms of how it will "play out." However, as Green claimed, one thing is certain: Flagg's talent places him at the top of the team's hierarchy, so he certainly "won't shift," while others will ultimately have to. Bears' Joe Thuney, Jonah Jackson dubbed NFL's best guard duo
The Chicago Bears made a concerted effort to improve their offensive line this offseason after quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked a league-high 68 times during his rookie season. The Bears completely overhauled the interior, which started with the trades for All-Pro guard Joe Thuney and former Pro Bowl guard Jonah Jackson. They signed center Drew Dalman in free agency while drafting Ozzy Trapilo, who's a contender to start at left tackle as a rookie. Advertisement But it's the duo of Thuney and Jackson that's garnering high praise from those around the league, where Pro Football Focus dubbed the pair the NFL's best guard duo entering the 2025 season. While there's no denying Thuney is one of the league's best, PFF believes Jackson could find his stride, as he's reunited with Ben Johnson in Chicago, and make this 1-2 punch the most formidable. "The NFL seems to lack an elite guard duo right now, but the Bears' offseason acquisitions on the interior profile as the league's best," writes Buday. "Jackson played only 267 snaps with the Rams in 2024 and was benched despite having signed a big contract last offseason. In previous years, he ranked among the top 30 guards in PFF overall grade multiple times under then-Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who is now the Chicago Bears' head coach. Slightly above-average play from Jackson could be enough to make this duo the best in the NFL. "Joe Thuney is arguably the best pass-blocking guard in the NFL. Before moving to left tackle in 2024, he was playing some of the best football of his career. Between Week 5 and Week 12, he allowed only one pressure on 316 pass plays and earned a 95.6 PFF pass-blocking grade, which led all guards by a significant margin." Thuney is a two-time First-Team All-Pro, three-time Pro Bowler and four-time Super Bowl winner and one of the best guards in the entire NFL. Thuney's an elite pass blocker and has been the best pass-blocking guard, per Pro Football Focus, since 2021 with a 90.2 grade. Jackson, a Pro Bowl selection in 2021, is a versatile offensive lineman who has played all three positions along the interior and brings experience alongside right tackle Darnell Wright. Advertisement If the Bears offensive line shows improvement this season, the sky's the limit for this offense with Williams under center and Johnson calling the shots on offense.
