England stars buoyed by promise of secret weapon despite France defeat
England wonderkid Michelle Agyemang was only on the pitch for five minutes against France on Saturday but has already shown she can be the Lionesses ' secret weapon. The Arsenal teenager caused havoc in the French box in the lead-up to Keira Walsh's goal for the Lionesses, and only a sharp stop from goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin prevented the youngster from snatching a last-gasp equaliser.
'She's great, she's an incredible talent, an incredible person,' team-mate Jess Carter said of Agyemang. 'Having someone like her to bring on, we do have depth in our subs. And the players that came on today really showed that and made a really big impact. I'm really happy Michelle's in the squad because she's been a great impact.'
Agyemang's fellow sub Grace Clinton agreed, saying: 'We've done that so many times since I've been here, coming back from losing positions. I think especially in the last 10 minutes we always get that little spurt of energy and you have players like Hempo [ Lauren Hemp ] that don't give up and don't stop running.
'It helps the team and I think Michelle coming on making an impact. I think I felt like we could have got another goal if you give us a couple more minutes but we just got to take that into the next game.'
England had chances to take the lead early on, with Lauren James going close in the opening minute and Alessia Russo seeing a goal disallowed for a tight offside in the build-up. Ultimately, though, it was a quickfire double from France which did the damage as Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore struck in quick succession.
'I've got loads of confidence in this team,' left-back Carter said ahead of Wednesday's must-win game against the Nerherlands. 'Not just watching them at the last Euros but the experience we have in the team.
'In the last two years I've been here I've seen us not only come back from being in a losing position but win so many games. And I think the experience we've got and the players that we've got I've got all the confidence in the world.'
England's next opponents are coming off a tidy win of their own against Wales. Manchester City striker Vivianne Miedema scored a stunning opener for the Netherlands, with Victoria Pelova and Esmee Brugts also on target.
"Yes, a different team, they're very dynamic. Of course I know them very well," England boss Sarina Wiegman said of the nation she previously managed to Euro 2017 glory.
"They want to play in the pockets and try to change the shape all the time. They definitely want to have the ball and play but they also want to press high, so we'll get prepared for that."

The report states that Lyon are hopeful the price will be driven up due to the amount of interest in Fofana. The French side do need to sell as their financial problems have seen them relegated from Ligue 1, although the club are appealing the decision. Diaz speaks out Luis Diaz has been heavily linked with a move away from Liverpool this summer, with both Barcelona and Bayern Munich said to be interested in signing the winger. And Diaz has now spoken out about the rumours, telling Colombian broadcaster WinSports: "It's not known yet, we're talking with the board. We're comfortable with where I am, and we'll have to see." However, it has previously been reported that Liverpool have do not want to sell the winger and have already rejected an approach from Bayern. Diaz scored 17 goals and provided eight assists across all competitions last season. Zubimendi joins Arsenal Arsenal have signed midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, just one year after he rejected the chance to join Liverpool. Arsenal have finally completed the signing of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad and they are also closing in on a deal for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres Arsenal are set for a huge summer in the transfer market as Mikel Arteta looks to add plenty of reinforcements to his squad. The Gunners have finished second in the Premier League for the past three seasons and will be desperate to go one better next season. They have already signed a backup goalkeeper in Kepa Arrizabalaga and a new midfielder in Martin Zubimendi, but plenty more additions are expected before the window closes on September 1. Several players have also left the club, with Nuno Tavares and Marquinhos making loan deals permanent, while Takehiro Tomiyasu reached an agreement to terminate his contract 12 months early. Zubimendi joins Martin Zubimendi has finally completed his move to Arsenal, with the Gunners paying slightly more than his £51m release clause. Martin Zubimendi is Arsenal's missing piece as Mikel Arteta's patience pays off
Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Martin Zubimendi with the midfielder heading to the Emirates from Real Sociedad in a £51million transfer Martin Zubimendi has been part of Mikel Arteta's midfield masterplan for more than a year. And now finally, Arsenal boss Arteta has got the missing piece of the jigsaw with the £51m arrival of one of Europe's top midfielders. Arteta actually wanted to buy Zubimendi AND Mikel Merino last summer but Real Sociedad did not want to sell both their star midfielders in the same transfer window. Merino, 29, arrived in a £32m deal but Arsenal used that as an opportunity to sew the seeds for the Zubimendi deal and were prepared to be patient. This, after all, was a player they had tracked and tried to get even before last summer but Zubimendi has always been a 'home bird,' reluctant to leave his home in San Sebastián after 15 years at Real Sociedad. Liverpool thought they had a deal with Zubimendi last summer but the Spain international did not want to move and it was clearly Arsenal's long-standing interest and Arteta which have been key. Arteta championed the deal because they knew Thomas Partey and Jorginho were into the final year of their deals while Zubimendi was the Arsenal manager's dream midfield anchorman. Zubimendi, 26, has already won the Euros with Spain so is a top class performer with an ability to control games, set the tempo and is seen as a hard worker with a strong mentality. His passing range is key with accuracy and decisive passes. He is also very rarely injured and that will be crucial for Arsenal after last season saw so many players - including big new signing Riccardo Calafiori - on the treatment table. The arrival may also unlock Merino's full potential as they are friends, teammates reunited and also have dovetailed well together in the past. It gives Arsenal options and the ability to use Declan Rice to push further forward which has become such a part of his game while they also have Christian Norgaard on the horizon as back-up and competition plus Martin Odegaard as the creator in chief. But because of Zubimendi's loyalty to Real Sociedad - any transfer would be a huge step for him both personally and for his career - it was vital that Arsenal got it tied down. They stayed in constant contact with Zubimendi and Real Sociedad, agreed the deal back in March which meant everything was in place for this summer to complete the medical and formalities. When Real Madrid showed even the slightest of interest as Xabi Alonso took charge, there was never any danger. It was all done for Arsenal. When Andrea Berta joined as sporting director, it was obvious that he was just as much on board as Arteta. The problem Arsenal have had is that this deal has felt like it was done months ago. It is missing a sense of surprise and excitement - because everyone has known it was coming. But the fact is Arsenal have signed one of the best midfielders in Europe and Zubimendi is a significant upgrade on last season with the options and quality he brings. Zubimendi told the Arsenal website: 'Once I made the decision to leave, I set my sights on Arsenal because I think their style of play is a good fit for me. It's a young, highly motivated and ambitious team. They have shown their potential recently, and I believe the best is yet to come. 'As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are. Andrea Berta and Mikel Arteta took excellent care of me, leaving me with no doubts whatsoever. This is a huge moment in my career. It's the move I was looking for; one I wanted to make. Of course, it's a big change, but I'm ready to get started.'
