THE owners of a smash burger van are 'gutted' after the council forced it to shut for being too close to local primary schools.
Co-owners Sam Carroll, 21, and Aaron Millar, 21, lost their bid for permission to house their smash burger takeaway trailer Smokies on the carpark of Dunkirk Hall pub in Leyland, Lancs.

The burger-loving duo employ 18 locals but will now have to halve their staff numbers.
South Ribble Borough Council threw out the bid based on a new law banning takeaways within 'walking distance' of school gates.
They also said the trailer damaged the appearance of the Grade II listed building opposite.
Owner Sam fumed this was 'ridiculous', insisting kids barely ever come to buy burgers after school.
The pub itself, Dunkirk Hall, said it wanted the burger van to stay put.
Sam said: 'It took less than 10 minutes for them to decide that we had to move on from the location - it felt like instant disregard.
'The community love our food - they go out of their way to tell us how much they enjoy it and leaving reviews.
'We are a small business which has grown so much thanks to the word of mouth of our customers.
'We don't want to have to fire our staff - they have done nothing wrong.
'We will do whatever it takes to keep it open - we want to work with the council to come to work out a way.'
The young entrepreneurs took up the plot on November 8 last year after a good year at The Red Lion pub in Longton, near Preston, Lancs.
To secure their new location, they applied for planning permission from the council a couple of months later, in mid January 2025.
The black trailer takes up three spaces behind trees and bushes in one corner of the 40 square metre carpark.
They also have a two chilled storage sheds next door.
But they were "shocked" to find the application rejected in mid-April based on the proximity to school.
There are four primary schools and one preschool within a 0.4 to 0.6 mile radius of the van - and the trailer is not in a town centre, which would make it exempt.
Sam said: 'It is isn't often kids come and get a burger after school - especially while in uniform.'
'If a child does come up to the van they are usually with their parents who are enjoying their evening at the pub.

'They'll order for them, normally getting the kid one of our kids' meals."
Demi Scott, manager of Dunkirk Hall, said kids under the age of 18 aren't allowed to gather near the boozer without a parent anyway.
The 24-year-old said: 'If a child came onto the premises by themselves, we would turn them away - we legally can't have them here.
'We don't want to lose Smokies - the community they have brought has been super beneficial keeping us going in the tougher months.
'They are no hassle at all very polite - they have never taken a step wrong.
'The van is out of the way of the building so I don't see what the problem is - I really hope it comes to a fair conclusion.'
Council planning officer Debbie Roberts admitted that walking distance was 'subjective', because it is not defined in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).
However, a report presented to the council stated that 'on balance' the spot was likely in breach of the rules, with the schools just a 10 minute walk away.

The new local regulations are yet to come into force but were included within the proposed Central Lancashire Local Plan.
The regulations will block the opening of new takeaways in areas where levels of obesity in Reception and Year 6 children exceed 10 and 15 percent of pupils.
In the Earnshaw Bridge ward, where the outlet is based, 9.3 per cent of reception-aged children are obese - but that rises to 20.8 per cent in the final primary school year.
These rules have already seen takeaways blocked in Blackburn and Bacup, in Lancashire, due to there being too many obese children.
The council also deemed the burger van to be damaging to Dunkirk Hall itself.
Debbie Roberts said the 'visual appearance' of the facility caused 'harm' to the pub as a result of their proximity to the historic building.
She added: 'There aren't considered to be any public benefits which outweigh the harm.'
Members voted to refuse the planning application and also declined to issue listed building consent for the business.
As Smokies put forward the application themselves, they have six months to appeal the decision or vacate the area - and are still trading on the site.
Sam said the company wants to work alongside the council to find a way to keep the van trading.
He said: 'We are proper community led business - supporting a handful of those who live in the area.
'We are happy to move the trailer to a different location in the car park.
'We want to come to a conclusion rather than be dismissed.'

I'm a millionaire — there's one food item I'll never waste money on
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Welcome back to What's Cooking, Metro's food series where we find out exactly what's going on behind the scenes in the nation's kitchens. This week we're in Richmond, rifling through Sam Budd's kitchen to find out what he's hiding in his cupboards, fridge and freezer. Sam lives in one of the 'happiest' places to live in Great Britain, along with his girlfriend Katie. Oh, and did we mention he's a millionaire? The 36-year-old is the founder and CEO of Buddy Media Group, a multi-million pound social media agency that specialises in social activations. If you've ever wondered what it's really like being a millionaire and whether they buy the same things as you from the supermarket, we've got the answers. Before we invade your kitchen, we want the inside scoop. What's it really like to be a millionaire? The millionaire thing is quite a unique statement for me. Six years ago, when I was launching the company, I got to a point where I was in about £120,000 worth of debt. It was so much that I couldn't even afford a coffee and my cards were being declined. Ultimately, I'm now in a position where I'm very lucky to have financial security, own a beautiful home and have a successful business. But I never take that for granted and I know you're also never fully safe – if the world implodes and the business goes down that's linked to my home, so you've always got to be mindful and frugal. My mum, is also so committed to reminding me about values and principles and those are what I live by. I always remind myself of them to keep my feet on the ground when I'm starting to push the limits and I'm overspending. Has having money changed the way you eat at home? I'd be lying if I said having money hadn't changed the way we eat. Money isn't everything but having it does make your life easier and means you can make decisions without financial stress. We've got a Waitrose down the road and it is particularly expensive when you're weighing it up against other supermarkets, but it's got some of the best organic food and produce, so we go in there two to three times a week and we like to buy meat from Piper's Farm, which is organic and comes from sustainable farming. We're also lucky enough to be able to try new things and try to find the best way to optimise our health and lifestyles. This involves cleaner living, focusing on non-processed foods, different supplements and ways to manage and improve our gut health. As part of this, we recently got a hydrogen water filter, which cost about £1,986. It's a really unique, new thing that is meant to help with cellular growth and is an antioxidant so, it's really good for inflammation. Tell us a secret, what's your ultimate guilty pleasure food? I can't believe I'm telling you this, but I'm known for putting an assortment of foods together to create a sweet treat bowl. I've eaten this since I was a child and it's something I'll have on a Friday or Saturday night when I want to splurge and be a bit naughty. I start with some yoghurt, I'm trying to move away from dairy to improve my gut health, so I use the stuff by the Coconut Lab and it's absolutely incredible. That then gets topped with fruit, usually some kind of berries, then I add in chocolate (Cadbury's and Tony's Chocolonely) and some chewy sweets. That all gets chucked in a bowl and I cover my sugar in more sugar, by squeezing manuka honey over it and finish it off with some hemp seeds and mix it all together. Name one storecupboard product you can't live without… You might notice my cupboards look insanely organised. I've had some help with this from the lovely ladies at Ever So Organised, which is a home organisation company. It's part of my journey to find work/life harmony as I've got limited time and I need to be able to come in and find things quickly, so having it all laid out neatly is incredible. It's something that helps me take better care of myself, manage my stress and deal with ADHD and I also do this through supplements, and you'll find plenty of those in the cupboard – it's like something out of Breaking Bad. Ultimately, though things like Magnesium Breakthrough have changed my life. It helps me with stress and winding down, as some weeks I'm working 100 hours and it's a pretty stressful environment to be in. Aside from these, there always has to be a tin of Baked Beans in the cupboard. If you don't have those at home, who are you? They're my favourite thing in the world. And something that always has to be in your fridge? Without a doubt, it's tzatziki. It's an absolute necessity in the food shop every week. If we don't get it, I'm an unhappy boy. I tend to eat it with cheese and crackers, but if I'm really honest, I can also just sit and eat it from the pot with a spoon. I love it so much. What about the freezer, what do you have to keep in there at all times? We make our own bone broth and I usually drink a cup of it each morning to start the day. I was dead against it at first, but it's got so much goodness in it and it is actually really tasty. I heat it up in a pan and then pour it into a mug. We make it in the slow cooker using chicken and beef bones, water, some salt, garlic and onions and leave it for nine hours overnight. Once it's ready, this is mostly kept in the fridge, but in the freezer we have a special versionfor our puppy, Otto. We make his broth with just the bones and water and pour it into ice cube trays. He loves it and it's a perfect frozen treat to cool off with when it's hot. Is there an item you're always willing to splurge on at the supermarket? If I'm coming home for the weekend, or having a barbecue, I love a really nice bottle of wine, like a Miraval rosé. It's not extortionate, but it's definitely not your Chicken Wine. I'd spend around £20 to £25 on a bottle like that at the shop and maybe £30 to £50 if I were buying a really decent bottle of red wine. Alternatively, which kitchen staple isn't worth splashing the cash on? There are two things I always buy the supermarket own-brand version of when I shop: yoghurts and cheese. The own-brand yoghurts are often just as delicious and just as rich as more expensive, branded ones, so you don't need to waste the money. And while I do love a good bit of cheese, if we do a cheeseboard, you'll always find some own-brand cheddar on there with everything else. I think the flavour is so nostalgic, it reminds me of the kind of cheese I loved as a kid in Lunchables and I'm still just a kid at heart. Finally… what's been cooking in your kitchen lately? More Trending Katie does a lot of the cooking when I'm working, but recently we've been growing herbs and spices in our garden and I've gotten really into making my own chimichurri. You just chop all the herbs and spices up finely and add some garlic and extra virgin olive oil to bind it all together. I add it to a sizzling steak or sometimes just eat it with cheese and crackers. View More » Want to take part in What's Cooking and let Metro raid your kitchen at home? One of Wales' best burger restaurants announce opening date in Cardiff
One of Wales' best burger restaurants announce opening date in Cardiff It will become its fifth Welsh location Some of the burgers on offer at Burger Boyz (Image: Burger Boyz ) One of south Wales's most loved burger restaurants is opening a new location in Cardiff. Burger Boyz has announced it will be arriving in the capital on Friday, July 18. It will be located at Cowbridge Road east in the Canton area of the city, within the same unit Ansh once traded. The business was launched by school mates Marcin Sadlos and Jack Phillips back in 2021, who quit their full-time jobs in the engineering industry after finding success pursuing a career in the culinary world, first buying a food truck, before taking over the kitchen at The Red Lion pub in Port Talbot. They went on to secure a spot at Newport Market, before going on to open a restaurant in Port Talbot, and are also based at Albert Hall in Swansea. For the latest restaurant reviews, sign up to our food and drink newsletter here . They also bought a food truck which is used to attend events, called The Truck Norris, named after its best-selling burger the Chuck Norris. The truck has had a presence at Bridgend designer outlet for the last year. Speaking ahead of the opening of their new location, Mr Sadlos said: "It's an exciting time. Cardiff is a site that we've wanted to open for a while now. Article continues below "We were looking for the right opportunity. "When Ansh decided to close, we got in touch with the landlords and decided to take it over." The restaurant's menu consists of seven different burgers, along with loaded fries and sides, and has gained a great reputation for the quality of its food. We tried it ourselves. You can read about that by clicking here. It has been visited by professional competitive eaters at its Port Talbot restaurant, including Randy Santel, Katina Eats Kilos, Joel Hansen (modelvsfood) and Leah Shutkever. Mr Sadlos added: "We are going to be serving the same menu that people are used to, and we are actually working on developing a little prep kitchen where we can bring in some smoked meats and some more American-style barbecue items. Article continues below "That will be for down the line and not for opening. "It will be a few months down the line once we have settled."

And insiders close to the couple say it won't be happening any time soon, as Paul has been "struggling with the dynamic' as Sam's business ventures reach new peaks. Friends say the former property developer is also 'disappointed' that his surname has been axed from one of her companies, causing him to "drag his feet". 'Main breadwinner' We can reveal that Knightley Adventures, a bath product company for children is no longer trading under that name. Instead, Sam's collection with Tesco now appears to have been renamed The Sam Faiers Edit. One friend said: 'It's no secret Sam has always been the main breadwinner, but over the last couple of years, she has become a business magnate to rival Kim Kardashian. Sam is now thought to be worth about £9 million thanks to Revive Collagen and her range with Tesco. 'Without meaning to, the dynamic in the house has changed and people suspect that Paul is starting to feel like he has been left behind. 'While Sam was once desperate for a proposal, things are different now and she's got her dream life and doesn't feel she needs the tag any more.' Paul was working as a property developer when he met Sam on a night out at famous Essex haunt Sheesh. He then went on to start up an online clothing company with Sam, known as All Bits London. Sam Faiers gives fans rare glimpse inside £2.25m family home amid amazing room transformation The company was later rebranded as Saint Avenue, but Sam resigned director soon after. While Paul is still listed as director and the company is still active - however there is no trace of the website anymore. Paul also appeared on the family TV show, before Sam stepped away from in 2021. The show wasn't the best PR for Paul, who fans branded 'lazy' and 'unsupportive' towards Sam. He was trolled by viewers when in one scene he kissed his mum on the lips - resulting in Sam speaking out to defend him. 12 Paul used to appear on TV with Sam - pictured here kissing his mum Gaynor 12 The couple have appeared on telly together but it didn't always go well Credit: ITV 12 Paul initially shied away from the limelight but stepped up to help Sam Credit: Splash News Jet-set lifestyle Meanwhile, Sam's solo ventures are thriving. This week Sam jetted off to America once again with her £26m brand Revive Collagen - which she launched in 2020 with business partner John Bailey. Looking incredible, Sam slipped into a skintight cream dress as she posed at Joshua Tree on a brand trip advertising the product. She gushed about her latest success, telling fans: 'As our US trip comes to a close, I've been reflecting on this journey with a full heart. Launching with @ultabeauty is a moment we'll never forget a true milestone for our brand.' The move means her already hugely successful company, which raked in £26 million last year, is well on course for its predicted £100m revenue goal for the next few years. 12 Sam is now working alongside Kim Kardashian's hairdresser Chris Appleton Credit: Instagram/@samanthafaiers 12 Sam with her business partner John Credit: Linkedin 12 Sam with Revive's ambassador Amanda Holden Credit: Instagram / noholdenback Pals say Sam has grown close to her business partner John who has become a real confidant for her, not just over matters for their brand, as they travel the world together, building an empire. They previously spent time in Los Angeles, alongside Kim Kardashian's hairdresser Chris Appleton. In November 2023 , Sam revealed that Chris is her new Global Business Ambassador for her brand Revive Collagen in a huge deal. Amanda Holden is also an ambassador for the ready to drink collagen brand - and was seen looking incredible in her bikini as they shot their latest campaign in Spain alongside Sam, who has carefully managed every step for Revive. Another friend said: 'Paul is of course incredibly proud, no one could ever have predicted how successful she would be. 'His own career has taken somewhat of a back seat as he helps keep some sense of normality with their three kids at home.' His mum Gaynor has become even more of a support to him as he takes over household duties. The family are now living in a lavish, newly renovated £2.35million house in Surrey, which boasts a garden so big it resembles a park. I know we will get married – but I'm so grateful that we have it all to look forward to. Sam Faiers In the past Sam has been very open about marriage and has been insistent that it will still happen. Speaking to sister Billie on their podcast The Sam & Billie show, which is currently on hold , Sam admitted: 'We've had a lot of pressure from people who watch our show and people ask 'why aren't you married yet, when is it going to happen? 'I know we will get married – but I'm so grateful that we have it all to look forward to and in our relationship, we've done the hardest bit (having kids). It is a big challenge and change for a couple. 'I know it's not the right or correct way round but it doesn't matter. But we have done the hardest bit and then hopefully the marriage will be a success and last forever!' Sam was a glamour model when she won a coveted spot on The Only Way Is Essex. She burst onto our screens as Lauren Goodger's love rival and started dating Mark Wright, before moving on to Joey Essex, who proposed to her on the show. She was an instant hit. After four years and countless headlines, Sam moved on with dreams of expanding her clothing store - Minnie's Boutique - which she opened with sister Billie at the height of their fame. A year after leaving the show, away from the cameras, Sam met Paul Knightley on a night out at famous Essex haunt Sheesh. Fans were surprised as for the first time ever, her private life wasn't so public with property developer Paul keen to keep out of the limelight. After just ten months of dating Sam fell pregnant with their first child - who they also named Paul - and their romance looked very much set in stone. 12 Sam and Billie are filming a new TV show together 12 The sisters are including their parents on the show 12 Sam and Paul with their three children Now, the sisters are gearing up to return to telly for a new TV show - Sam & Billie: Sister Act. While their previous show was very much centred around the family, the focus is now very much on the women. Sam told her fans it would follow them as they 'navigate careers, motherhood, and relationships'. An insider added: 'The fact that Sam has put her career first in that really says where her head is at the moment. She is incredibly driven and wants to bring people along for the ride. 'Big Paul is taking a secondary role, and will be keeping the cogs turning back at home. A wedding certainly doesn't seem to be on the agenda any time soon.' Sam's rep has been contacted for comment.
