Bursa stays bullish for FY2025 as fund managers hold record cash levels, forecasts return of foreign funds, IPO boom

Malay Mail6 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Bursa Malaysia Bhd is maintaining its pre-tax profit (PBT) target of between RM369 million and RM408 million for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2025 (FY2025).
Its chief executive officer, Datuk Fad'l Mohamed, said the projection remains amid strong liquidity from the domestic market and stable economic growth.
He pointed out that the target is part of Bursa Malaysia's headline key performance indicator for the year and sees its earnings would potentially come from its derivatives and non-trading revenues to remain strong in the second half of its FY2025.
Fad'l added that Bursa Malaysia anticipates a double-digit growth in its non-trading revenues over the next three years.
'Local investors, in particular, are noteworthy. I understand that many fund managers are currently holding cash. Data indicates that as of May, fund managers are holding approximately 11.5 per cent cash, which is the highest level since January 2024.
'We hope to see a greater level of trading activities once that cash is deployed,' he told reporters after announcing Bursa Malaysia's financial performance results for the first half of 2025 today.
Fad'l said a better performance for FY2025 would also be supported with favourable aspects such as the attractive valuation of FBM KLCI, which currently stood at a discount of 17 per cent to its 10-year mean.
He added that Bursa Malaysia is on track to capture 60 initial public offerings (IPOs) throughout 2025, with RM40.2 billion in total IPO market capitalisation.
He added that the preemptive move undertaken by Bank Negara Malaysia to reduce interest rates by 25 basis points would bring additional liquidity to the financial system, and the FBM KLCI would have an upside from its current level of 1,530.
In the first half of 2025, Bursa Malaysia recorded 32 IPOs, comprising six in the main market, 23 in ACE and three in LEAP.
Meanwhile, trading activities in Bursa Malaysia are expected to recover in the second half of 2025, supported by capital deployment from funds currently holding high levels of cash.
'A lot of it will be dependent on capital flows. And I think quite clearly, for us, we see that funds are already sitting on a lot of cash. So, they will want to deploy that cash,' said Fad'l.
He added that Bursa Malaysia still holds to the annual average daily trading value (ADV) consensus of RM2.6 billion.
Fad'l believes that foreign funds may return to the Malaysian market as current valuations present an attractive entry point and strategic imperatives begin to take shape.
He added that towards the end of last year, the bourse operator saw some movements with foreign funds that were looking to find safe havens.
'There was a lot of uncertainty towards the end of last year, including the Asean markets, which recorded foreign outflows. I think right now would be a good time, given where valuations are, for foreign funds to come back,' Fad'l said. — Bernama

Supermax co-founder to oppose husband Stanley Thai's media blackout bid

Tan Bee Geok is suing Stanley Thai over statements he made three years ago which she claims were calculated to shame her as a mother, relative and business leader. PETALING JAYA : The estranged wife of Supermax founder Stanley Thai is opposing his application to bar the media and public from their high-stakes defamation suit. Tan Bee Geok, co-founder of the glovemaking giant, will contend at the hearing that Thai has no grounds to oppose a public hearing since he claims his impugned statements are true. Tan also claims that Thai's statements were circulated beyond their household. For that reason, she says, it would be fundamentally unjust to shut the courtroom doors in a lawsuit brought to seek redress for harm allegedly suffered in the public domain. Tan will argue that an open trial is a fundamental principle of Malaysia's legal system and that any discomfort felt is normal to all litigants. She is also expected to take issue with the late filing of Thai's application, saying it disrupted the trial which had been scheduled to start last month. On Wednesday, Tan filed an affidavit setting out her reasons for opposing the application. Thai has until Aug 6 to file his reply. Judicial Commissioner Eddie Yeo will hear the application on Sept 19. Tan is suing Thai over a series of text messages and verbal remarks allegedly made to family and friends three years ago—statements, she claims, were calculated to shame her as a mother, relative and business leader. With the trial set to begin on July 23, Thai made an eleventh-hour application for a sweeping gag order to limit any potential harm to his personal and professional reputation. He said he was also looking to shield several high-profile witnesses he intended to call to testify on his behalf. In his application, Thai asked for the court to hold the trial behind closed doors, seal all court documents, and impose a media blackout of the proceedings. He said the trial touches on matters that are confidential and private, and that they only involve familial matters that do not warrant public interest. Thai, 65, is also understood to be calling several well-known individuals to testify, including a former national badminton player, a distinguished businessman and the manager of a renowned international artiste. The tycoon did not name them but said one witness was about to get married and would not want past romantic relationships brought out into the open. Thai also seeks other protective measures, including an order that all court transcripts remain confidential and be made available only to the parties and their lawyers. He also wants all transcribers to sign non-disclosure agreements. Tan, 64, is represented in the suit by S Ravenesan, while Shearn Delamore & Co acts for Thai. Thai and Tan jointly own Supermax Holdings Sdn Bhd, a substantial shareholder in Supermax Corporation Berhad, one of the world's leading producers of rubber gloves. They were married in 1987, but saw their relationship deteriorate amid allegations from both sides. In 2022, Tan sought a judicial separation. Thai filed for divorce in April last year. Those proceedings are ongoing in the family court.

Malaysian property tycoon Ong Beng Seng pleads guilty to abetting Singapore ex-minister Iswaran in obstructing justice

SINGAPORE, Aug 4 — Property tycoon Ong Beng Seng today pleaded guilty to abetting former Transport Minister S Iswaran in obstructing justice by helping him pay S$5,700 for a flight ticket from Doha to Singapore. The delayed payment was made months after the December 2022 trip and only after the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) found Iswaran's name on the flight manifest while probing another case. Ong, 79, also had a second charge taken into consideration, for instigating Iswaran to obtain flights and a hotel stay from him despite knowing he had business dealings with the minister's official role. The Malaysian businessman's guilty plea comes around a month after Iswaran was released on remission following a 12-month jail sentence and completion of home detention. Ong, who helped bring Formula 1 to Singapore in 2008, was first charged in October 2024 with two offences that matched those Iswaran later pleaded guilty to. Iswaran was sentenced in October to four months' jail for obstructing justice, as part of a 12-month term covering five charges, with another 30 taken into consideration. The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) said after Iswaran's sentencing that Ong would not face charges related to the other matters involving Iswaran. 'In arriving at this decision, the prosecution considered all the relevant facts and circumstances of the case, including the role that Ong played in each of the transactions,' said the AGC at the time. It later emerged that Ong was undergoing chemotherapy for bone marrow cancer. Ong was and remains the majority shareholder of Singapore GP, which organised the Singapore Grand Prix from 2008 to 2023, except during the COVID-19 pandemic. Iswaran, who was Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations and chaired the F1 Steering Committee, accepted Ong's offer to join a private jet trip to Qatar in December 2022. The CPIB discovered the flight manifest in May 2023 while investigating another matter, leading to Ong and Iswaran coordinating a belated payment for the return flight.
