Review: 'The Tilting House' is a novel about coming of age in Communist Cuba

Yuri is a 16-year-old orphan who lives simply with her religious aunt in a big, old house in Communist Cuba in the years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Yuri's parents had named her after the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gargarin, hoping that one day she would grow up to be a famous female astronaut. Yuri now has vague hopes of being accepted into the Lenin school, Cuba's prestigious preparatory.

The Tilting House
By Ivonne Lamazares
(Counterpoint Press; 304 pages; $27)
Yuri and her Aunt Ruth's quiet lives are suddenly turned upside down when an unexpected visitor from 'la Yuma' — slang for the United States — shows up at their Havana home with a camera swinging from her neck and announcing she is family. Ruth later tells Yuri that 34-year-old Mariela is her daughter, and that when Mariela was an infant she sent her to live with a family in the United States through Operation Pedro Pan, a U.S. government program in which thousands of unaccompanied children were sent from Cuba to Miami in the early 1960s.
'The Tilting House,' by Miami-based writer Ivonne Lamazares and due out Tuesday, July 22, is an affecting and sometimes amusing coming-of-age novel set in a country that few have had the opportunity to visit, despite its proximity to the U.S.
It's a study of hidden family secrets, the unhealed wound of losing a mother and the quest for home.
Lamazares, who was born in Havana, knows her homeland well, and her book is rife with description and historic detail that only someone with first-hand knowledge could provide. Lamazares left Cuba for the United States in 1989 during a period of shortages and deprivation known as 'The Special Period in Time of Peace.' Her first novel, 'The Sugar Island,' also set in Cuba, was translated into seven languages.
In 'The Tilting House,' Yuri is quickly pulled into Mariela's chaotic world and her absurd art projects, which include a tragicomic funeral for Ruth's dead dog, Lucho, in a public park using highly illegal homemade fireworks. Ruth, already viewed as suspect by the government as a member of the small Jehovah's Witnesses group, is arrested and sent to jail on unexplained charges.
Mariela later tells Yuri that they aren't cousins, but sisters, and that their now-dead mother gave birth to her as a teenager. Mariela insists that their Aunt Ruth 'kidnapped' her and sent her to live in the U.S., where she was raised on a farm in Nebraska.
More harebrained projects follow, and the family's tilting house finally tumbles after neighbors and acquaintances slowly chip away at the building to repurpose many of the structure's materials.
Yuri later emigrates to the U.S., where she studies and starts a career that allows her to make a return visit to the island. On that trip her past becomes clearer, and she reaches something approaching closure and forgiveness.

Belly Finally Got an Engagement Ring on 'The Summer I Turned Pretty'—And You Can Shop It Now

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. If you were surprised that Jeremiah Fisher proposed to Belly Conklin without a ring—and without kneeling!—in the season 3 premiere of The Summer I Turned Pretty, then let the newest episode make up for that. In this week's chapter of the Prime Video series, Jeremiah finally gets down on one knee and asks for Belly's hand in marriage with a proper diamond. The ring in question is The Diamond Fizz Ring from Catbird. It's a sweet and delicate piece that fits Belly's youthful, summery style, consisting of a yellow gold band and a round white diamond. This just marks one of the many ways the Brooklyn-based jeweler teamed up with TSITP for its third and final season. The brand and the show also collaborated on a seven-piece collection inspired by Belly's story and summery themes, from infinity-shaped rings (if you know, you know) to seashell charms. Below, Catbird's chief creative officer Leigh Batnick Plessner spills all the details on Belly's new bling. First, let's lay out the stats: The Fizz Ring is made of 100-percent recycled, solid 14K yellow gold with a band measuring about .80mm. As for the stone, it's a 3mm-round, .089-carat recycled white diamond with a brilliant cut. The piece currently retails online and in stores for $289. A petite version is priced at $168. The Catbird team primarily works with 14K gold, and this ring is only offered in that material because of its size. Silver would've been 'too delicate,' Plessner tells ELLE, 'and we really want it to stand the test of time.' Which is exactly what you want in an engagement ring. Plessner loves seeing how different people style the piece, whether that means wearing it on different fingers or stacking it with other pieces. 'The diamond is slightly lifted so it can fit in with other rings [when stacked],' she says. (That might even include Belly's future wedding band.) The ring was not custom-designed for the series, but instead pulled from Catbird's Fizz collection, which is made entirely with recycled brilliant cut diamonds and solid 14K gold. It first debuted 'as we were emerging from COVID,' Plessner recalls. The name 'fizz' was meant to evoke 'a little bit of effervescence, and it felt so good to be out and about,' she says. The design is intended for both everyday use and for engagements. 'It felt equally perfect to me when they pulled that ring,' Plessner says of the TSITP team. 'Something that we always think about with our jewelry is this idea of how different people wear it, how it can shape-shift to suit your style, both in the moment and over time,' Plessner explains. 'Or this idea of maybe one day a child finding a ring in their parents' jewelry box and fitting it into their lives. So I think it suits young love because it's so wearable and it can grow with you over time, and it can always suit whatever evolution of your personal style you might be in.' Belly is 20 years old and a junior in college when she gets engaged, which means a ring like this can still match her style as she grows and evolves through the years. The linkup began when Plessner received a personal Instagram DM from Carol Lim, a co-founder of Opening Ceremony and a close friend of Jenny Han, the author and showrunner of The Summer I Turned Pretty. 'She's obviously iconic New York retail royalty,' she recalls. When meeting with Lim, 'we started to talk about the idea of a collection and a collaboration, and we have some really massive Summer I Turned Pretty fans on our team as well, so everyone was really excited,' she says. And while the series might seem to cater to a younger audience (we adult women who binge the show after work beg to differ), there's something universal about its romantic and summery appeal. 'Everybody has a relationship with summer, but this idea of this pocket of time when the beach is so special—that feels really connected to an East Coast summer experience I'm so familiar with,' Plessner says. Belly's ring captures a rising ethos around engagement rings rather than a specific trending design. The Fizz Ring, like many of Catbird's offerings, can be described as 'jewelry that makes you feel more like yourself,' according to Plessner. 'In that sense, it's really reflective of a moment where people really feel free to pursue their path.' Belly knows how to do exactly that. As Lola Tung, the actress behind the character, recently told ELLE, she knows what she wants, even if that means facing criticism for getting married at a young age. 'She knows she's young, but she's also quite stubborn and is making decisions for herself,' Tung said. 'She's like, 'I need to do what I need to do for myself to protect myself, and to feel safe, and to feel like I am in control of my story and my life.''

David Beckham's son Brooklyn gushes over Nicola Peltz's steamy bathtub shoot

David Beckham's oldest son, Brooklyn Beckham, has stepped behind the camera lens to take some intimate photos of his wife, Nicola Peltz - and he's raving about the end result. On Tuesday, July 22, Nicola - who's been married to Brooklyn since 2022 - took to Instagram to share one of the risque shots taken by David and Victoria Beckham's oldest son. In the revealing snap, the brunette is seen covering her chest while while laying naked in a bathtub. Nicola flaunted her natural beauty in the make-up free photo shoot as she gave the camera a pout and flaunted her natural beauty. She added a tiny amount of bling to the image by donning a tennis bracelet on her wrist and a gold chain wrapped around her waist. She captioned the post, "best memories 🥺🏝️✨🌸🫶🏻🍸🛁⚓️🥹." The brunette daughter-in-law of Inter Miami CF owner, David, shared a second intimate snap in the carousel of herself standing topless as she gazed into a bathroom mirror. In the selfie, she wore her long brunette locks in a down look and held a martini glass in her hand with a towel wrapped around her tiny waist. Brooklyn, 26, quickly gushed over his wife's intimate snaps in the comments section, writing, "I took the photo in the bath ❤️." He added, 'Love you xx.' "True goddess," one person commented. "You guys are so cute together," someone else wrote. "Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor. You're perfection," another person wrote. Others criticized the couple's decision to share the intimate photos on social media. "Why would you show the world a picture of your wife naked? Isn't that just precious to you? I'm just interested because my man would never do that. I'm his woman and where we come from we don't show that kind of thing. I'm just interested. That's all," one person commented on Instagram. "Is it normal for a man to let his girlfriend appear completely naked in front of everyone? He says he loves her, and from the philosophy of love, jealousy is a natural feeling. So, am I the one who's complicated? Tell me maybe I'm wrong," another person wrote. "Well this is extremely odd," someone else quipped. "Call me a respectful the picture in the bath would be for my husbands eyes only 😮😮," another person added. In addition to Brooklyn, David and Victoria share three other children together: Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14. 32-year-old gorilla gives birth to ‘bundle of joy' at CO zoo. See it cling to mom

A gorilla had her third baby at a Colorado zoo, and keepers are calling it a 'bundle of joy.' The zoo was filled with 'pure joy' on July 21, after welcoming the newest baby gorilla, according to a Facebook post by the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. The baby's mom, 32-year-old Asha, a critically endangered Western lowland gorilla, is bonding with her new baby, and the pair 'seem to be doing well,' zookeepers said. 'Asha is sitting and lying down with the baby and gently patting its back, which is really adorable,' Ashton Asbury, the Primate World animal keeper, said in the post. 'The baby hangs onto Asha while she's moving around and she supports it with one hand. They're bonding really well, and we have seen her licking the baby's head and grooming it.' Even first-time dad Goma, 34, 'is showing interest in the baby, too,' zookeepers said. 'He seems to want to stick close to her and the baby,' Asbury said. 'I heard him making happy gorilla grumbles at them, and Asha is doing a good job of showing him the baby while keeping a comfortable distance.' Asha was born at the zoo in 1992, and Goma came in 2016 as part of the Western Lowland Gorilla Species Survival Plan, zookeepers said. The baby, who hasn't been named and whose sex hasn't been identified, is already meeting milestones, like 'nursing and clinging to its mom,' zookeepers said. Asha has had two other babies at the Colorado Springs-based zoo, and the 'goal is to let Asha take the lead on newborn care,' zookeepers said. The baby will 'likely cling to Asha for the first several weeks' as it gets to know their dad, zookeepers said. Facebook users rushed to the comments to congratulate Asha, with one person saying, 'SO PRECIOUS.' 'This is so beautiful,' another wrote. 'That baby is cuuuuuttttteeeee! **squeel!*' another said. Colorado Springs is about a 70-mile drive southeast from Denver.
