Teen rider in viral wrong-way video surrenders to police
The incident occurred at Km 38 of the southbound North-South Expressway (PLUS) and drew widespread attention after a video was circulated on social media last Friday.
Kota Setar police chief Assistant Commissioner Siti Nor Salawati Saad said the girl surrendered herself around 9pm last night and was taken into custody.
Police also seized the motorcycle believed to have been used during the incident.
"She claimed she had mistakenly used the wrong lane while following navigation instructions on her mobile phone to return to Pendang," said Siti Nor Salawati in a statement today.
The teenager is expected to be brought before the Alor Star magistrate's court today for a remand application.
Salawati said the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
If found guilty, offenders under this section may face up to five years in jail and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000.
The viral video, which showed the girl riding in the opposite direction while using her phone near the toll plaza, sparked concern and criticism from the public.
