SANUR, Indonesia – Two Chinese nationals were killed and an Indonesian was missing on Aug 5 after a boat sailing to the popular island of Bali with dozens onboard sank and ran aground, rescue authorities said. A fast boat travelling from Nusa Penida 'sank and ran aground' near Sanur port in Bali's east, the island's search and rescue agency said in a statement. Head of the rescue agency in Bali's provincial capital Denpasar, Mr I Nyoman Sidakarya, confirmed two Chinese nationals were killed and a 23-year-old Indonesian remained missing. The boat was left overturned on a beach near Sanur port, according to an AFP journalist at the scene. The rescue agency did not say the cause of the Chinese nationals' deaths. The boat was carrying 80 people, including 73 foreign nationals, two Indonesians and five crew members, the rescue agency in Denpasar said. Marine accidents are a regular occurrence in Indonesia, a South-east Asian archipelago nation of around 17,000 islands, in part due to lax safety standards and sometimes due to bad weather. Turkey sets up parliamentary commission to oversee PKK disarmament

KURDISTAN WORKERS PARTY MEDIA OFFICE/Handout via REUTERS/File Photo ANKARA - Turkey's parliament launched a commission on Tuesday to oversee the disarmament of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militant group following its jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan's call for it to end its insurgency. Thirty PKK militants burned their weapons in a ceremony in northern Iraq last month, marking a symbolic first step towards ending a decades-long struggle with Turkey in which more than 40,000 people have been killed. Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus told lawmakers at the opening of the first session that one of the commission's responsibilities would be to oversee the disarmament process. "With the complete disarmament, the preparation of legal regulations that will make peace permanent is also among the responsibilities of this commission," Kurtulmus said. The PKK, designated a terrorist group by Turkey and its Western allies, began its insurgency in 1984. It decided in May to disband, disarm and end its armed struggle, saying it "has completed its historic mission". Its goals shifted over the decades from seeking an independent state to seeking greater Kurdish rights and limited autonomy in mainly Kurdish southeast Turkey. All but one parliamentary party are represented in the commission, marking the first time multiple parties have formally gathered in parliament to address the peace process. Top stories Swipe. The PKK's decision to disband came after a public call from its long-imprisoned leader Ocalan, prompted by a surprise proposal in October from Erdogan's ultra-nationalist ally Devlet Bahceli. The pro-Kurdish DEM Party, Turkey's third-largest, played a key role facilitating Ocalan's peace call. "Permanent peace is possible through a democratic solution process based on a legitimate and inclusive political foundation," DEM's Gulistan Kocyigit told the commission. She said the DEM demands collective rights for Kurds, including the right to education in their mother tongue and steps to strengthen local governance. DEM's Meral Danis Bestas said steps should be taken to allow a review of Ocalan's aggravated life sentence. REUTERS

REUTERS/Valentyn Ogirenko/File Photo HELSINKI - Sweden, Norway and Denmark will together contribute around 5 billion Norwegian crowns ($486 million) to a NATO-led initiative to supply Ukraine with U.S. weapons, the Norwegian government said in a statement on Tuesday. U.S. President Donald Trump said last month the United States would supply weapons to Ukraine, paid for by European allies, but did not indicate how this would be done. Sweden said its share of the package, which includes Patriot missiles and other air defence equipment, as well as anti-tank munitions, would be worth $275 million. "Continued supply of this kind of American defence materiel, which Europe can't deliver in sufficient quantity, is decisive for Ukraine's defence capability," Swedish Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch told reporters on Tuesday. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the alliance was grateful to the three Nordic countries for their fast action to fund the package. NATO has said it would coordinate the NATO Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, which is funded by European members of the alliance and Canada and will be divided into packages worth approximately $500 million. The Netherlands on Monday was the first country to announce its participation with 500 million euros. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed.
