
Mersing's seaweed beds to be mapped
It will facilitate subsequent efforts in preserving the marine ecosystem.
Seaweed Exploration Programme chief researcher Assoc Prof Dr Jilian Ooi said mapping activities of the seaweed fields on the island were being initiated to assess changes in the area.
She said the location was chosen because the seaweed was easily accessible without a boat, unlike other areas such as Sungai Pulai and Sungai Johor.
'No one has mapped this before, so we don't know whether this area is experiencing a decline.
'We also want to examine how the seaweed roots grow, whether they are in a healthy condition,' she told Bernama at the launch of the programme at Kampungstay Teluk Buih, Air Papan.
Ooi, who is with the Geography Department in Universiti Malaya's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, said the programme also emphasised the importance of conserving seaweed as a crucial habitat for dugong, a marine mammal which has become increasingly rare since 2005.
'Villagers say that seaweed quantity has been decreasing because of poorer water quality (among other factors).
'Some said dugongs were abundant in 2005, but now they are hard to spot, possibly because of less seaweed,' said Ooi.
'The reduction of this marine plant indirectly affects the dugong's natural habitat,' she added.
JCorp Foundation chief executive officer Zaidatul Zurita Abdul Rahman said it remained committed to preserving Johor's marine ecosystem through the organisation of the two-day programme in the waters off Mersing.
She said the initiative was a continuation of marine conservation efforts by JCorp Foundation that began in 2023 through a coral reef rehabilitation project.
The foundation is now expanding its focus to seaweed areas since it recognises that marine ecosystem sustainability can only be achieved by preserving their habitats.
'While coral reefs often receive attention in conservation efforts, seaweed plays a quietly important role in supporting marine biodiversity.
'It serves as a breeding ground for fish and other marine life, helps protect coastal areas from erosion and plays a role in carbon absorption,' said Zaidatul.

MERSING, July 25 (Bernama) — Three coral reef zones in Terengganu have been identified as worst-hit by coral bleaching in Malaysia this year, according to the latest data on the country's marine ecosystem monitoring. Malaysian Marine Science Society (MSMS) president Affendi Yang Amri said due to rising sea surface temperatures, Pulau Redang recorded 100 per cent bleaching with a coral mortality rate of 63.6 pct, making it the worst hit location so far. This was followed by marine park islands like Pasir Besar in Pulau Lang Tengah which recorded a bleaching rate of 88.7 per cent and a mortality rate of 56.8 per cent, while Seringgih in Pulau Perhentian saw a bleaching rate of 54.9 per cent and a mortality rate of 24.9 per cent. "The three affected locations are located in Terengganu, which is one of the main states focused on marine-based tourism," he told Bernama at the Coral Reef Rehabilitation programme in Pulau Aur, Mersing recently. He said high sea surface temperature due to climate change is the main factor in the large-scale coral bleaching in several locations in the country this year. Affendi, who is also a coral reef expert, said the phenomenon was also recorded in several other locations including Sabah and Johor, and described the current bleaching as one of the worst in the history of coral reef monitoring in the country. "Last year, 2024, was indeed a very bad year. Sea water temperatures rose too high for a long period of time, causing coral reefs to become stressed, bleach and eventually die. In some locations, the death rate reached 60 per cent," he told Bernama. He said coral bleaching occurs when algae that live symbiotically with coral reefs are separated due to heat (thermal) stress, causing corals to lose their main food source and turns white and that coral reefs are breeding grounds for one third of marine species. 'When temperatures rise by just one degree Celsius above normal, corals will be stressed. The microscopic algae (called zooxanthellae) that usually provides up to 90 per cent of the coral's food will be expelled. When this algae is gone, the coral loses its colour (and turns white), the coral starves and eventually dies,' he explained.

SPAN launches REKA+ competition for youth water innovation
PUTRAJAYA: The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has introduced the REKA+ competition to encourage creativity and innovation among Malaysian youth. Running from August 1 to November 30, the contest is part of the MADANI Smart Water campaign. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof launched the campaign on May 8, aiming to promote sustainable water solutions. The competition invites students from universities, polytechnics, and colleges nationwide to develop water-related innovations. SPAN stated, 'The competition period will cover registration, shortlisting, prototype or model development, and evaluation by a panel of professional judges.' Winners stand to win cash prizes totaling RM19,000, with RM5,000 for first place, RM4,000 for second, RM3,000 for third, and RM1,000 each for fourth to tenth place. New UK envoy to Malaysia to prioritise chip cooperation
Ajay Sharma, UK High Commissioner to Malaysia - Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: The United Kingdom's new High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ajay Sharma, has made strengthening bilateral cooperation a key priority, with a particular focus on the fast-growing semiconductor sector and the development of integrated chip design and advanced manufacturing. He said the British government is keen to strengthen linkages and exchange ideas to increase the value chain in both countries in the semiconductor industry and the manufacture of high-end chips. This aligns with Malaysia's ambitions under the National Semiconductor Strategy or NSS to transition from outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing to high-end manufacturing and niche capabilities such as integrated circuit design. 'We have seen a Malaysian company invest in a new compound semiconductor facility in Wales,' he said, referring to SMD Semiconductor, a Sarawak state-owned firm that recently opened a research and development innovation hub in Newport, an industrial port city in Wales. 'Therefore, I really want to work with Malaysia on the semiconductor industry. Malaysia is already involved in different parts of the value chain, and we can complement and learn from each other,' he told Bernama after appearing on Bernama TV's 'The Nation' programme recently. Sharma, who succeeded Ailsa Terry CMG, had previously served in Iran, Qatar, Turkiye, Moscow and Paris. He also sees potential for a UK-Malaysia partnership in offering specialised courses on semiconductors and chip design in British universities, where a significant number of Malaysian students pursue higher education. 'We can also collaborate with local universities to bring Malaysian talent to the United Kingdom and set up courses here. Then we could see these courses develop and expand to Malaysia as well,' he said. He also highlighted clean energy as an area for increased bilateral cooperation, in which Malaysia has immense potential and where Britain could play a supporting role. 'Malaysia has huge natural resources, immense opportunities in clean energy and is working on significant development on carbon capture, green tech and energy transition. Malaysia also has creative and innovative technologies which can be used in our universities, labs and expanded into businesses. 'This interests me to try to get more investments from both countries in this sector as well,' said Sharma. Sharma said he is keen to boost two-way investments, especially Malaysian investments in the United Kingdom, citing successful ventures such as the Battersea Power Station redevelopment, YTL's Brabazon project in Bristol, and contributions in sectors ranging from water utilities like Wessex Water to power generation. At the same time, he aims to raise awareness among UK companies about business opportunities in Malaysia. 'Companies in the United Kingdom do not know much about the opportunities here in Malaysia, and we need to raise the profile to generate business interest. 'So, that is a key area that I would like to fix under my leadership,' said Sharma, who stressed this is even more important with Malaysia being a key market for economic growth in the Asean region. With UK-Malaysia trade worth £6bil (RM34.8bil), the potential for increased trade is huge. 'We should be doing much more in many areas, such as tech development, which affects everything from healthcare to life sciences to defence manufacturing.'
