Famously woke TV star's very surprising take on Steven Colbert's firing after star was axed over losing $40m a year

Daily Mail9 hours ago
Former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann has cast doubt on theories that CBS' decision to cancel 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' was politically motivated, due to the comic still having ten months left on the air.
'Also, no, I'm sorry, it does not fit the narrative, but Stephen Colbert was not fired because of Trump,' Olbermann, more than a decade after his own MSNBC ouster, said in a video posted to both X and Bluesky late Sunday.
'Do not give Trump credit for that,' he added.
'They may make it look like it is to please Trump but the economic factors are far more significant than anything else,' the ex-Countdown with Keith Olbermann anchor explained.
He said there was 'one unanswerable reason' that proved Colbert was not fired because of the conservative and CBS parent Paramount's long-in-limbo sale to Skydance Media that requires federal approval.
'We've seen this before, you've just forgotten that it happened,' Olbermann, 66, added - alluding to MSNBC's cancellation of Phil Donahue's 'Donahue' in 2002 for what ended up being low viewership.
At the time, however, an internal memo leaked to the press stating execs' desire for Donahue to be fired for his opposition to the the US invasion of Iraq, fueling speculation the newsman's firing was for other reasons.
Drawing parallels that appeared to suggest CBS is playing a PR game, Olbermann, 66, pointed to Colbert's show's astonishing lack of profitability.
THANKS, TRUMP!
THE TRUMPSTEIN SCANDAL will now never die - because you sued Rupert, you moron
And, sorry, no, there's one inarguable fact that proves Colbert WASN'T cancelled to appease Trump

It was pegged this past Friday as being somewhere in the ballpark of negative $40million annually by Puck journalist Matthew Belloni, after ten years on the air.
'If they are silencing him, why have they decided to keep him on TV for the next ten months?' Olbermann asked on the Monday edition of his podcast, which bears the same name as his old MSNBC show that aired from 2003 to 2011.
'This is the Phil Donahue cancellation all over again. It works to CBS's corporate advantage to make it look like they are sucking up to the psycho,' he continued, suggesting C-Suiters back then purposely leaked the correspondence at a time where opposition to the budding was was not very popular.
'Sorry. This is the least of the reasons,' Olbermann added, putting to bed what he put as 'the almost-universally accepted premise that CBS cancelled Stephen Colbert solely to appease Trump.'
'I understand this busts the narrative and reduces our ability to suffer as martyrs,' he said Monday.
'Sorry. That's not what happened here,' he said in a separate Twitter post over the weekend. 'If it had, they wouldn't be keeping him on until next MAY.'
Olbermann offered his opinion as politicians like Senator Elizabeth Warren continue to question whether CBS's decision to cancel 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert ' was at all linked to Paramount Global's merger with Skydance Media
Colbert, 61, is one the most prominent of critics of the conservative, even amongst a crowded field of left-leaning late night hosts.
He is also at the top of that heap ratings-wise, making his ouster seemingly sudden - and to some, uncalled for.
The fact he took a swipe at his Paramount bosses on-air - for accepting what he presented as a 'big fat bribe' from the administration - just days ago further fueled the speculation.
The parties reached a $16 million settlement in a suit filed by Trump earlier this month - a sum only slightly more than the $15 million Colbert is said to earn annually.
In his piece for Puck Belloni outlined how The Late Show - which costs $100m a year to produce - has seen its advertiser revenue slump drastically even in the last three years, making it harder to pull Colbert's show out of the red.
Late night shows in general have slumped in profitability as viewers shun the format in favor of streaming services or other means of media.
Colbert was reported to be 'not angry, actually' about news of his cancelation, Puck reported - revealing how the host was chatting with his staff in a 'matter-of-fact' way before Thursday's show, shortly after finding out himself.
Moreover, Paramount co-C.E.O. George Cheeks was reportedly the one to pull the trigger on the cancellation - not Skydance CEO David Ellison or the former NBCU exec to serve as the new company's CEO once the merger is finished, Jeff Shell.
Trump, meanwhile, celebrated the news of the show's cancellation last week as it spread, furthering the idea he played a part.
'Sorry. That's not what happened here,' Olbermann wrote in a separate Twitter post over the weekend. 'If it had, they wouldn't be keeping him on until next MAY'
'I absolutely love that Colbert' got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings," he wrote in a Friday Truth Social post.
'I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert.'
Colbert holds the top spot in his hour, with an average of 2.417 million across 41 first-run episodes. Colbert took over as host in September 2015, after Letterman launched the program in 1993.
Second-best Jimmy Kimmel Live! takes in an average of 1.772 million viewers, for reference.
As for Olbermann, he left MSNBC in 2011, months after a scandal that saw him suspended for donating money to Democratic candidates who would go on to appear on his show.
The following January, Olbermann announced his departure from the network, which said in a statement that it had ended its contract with Olbermann. No further explanation was offered.

Denise Richards seen without wedding ring as she steps out in LA after ex Aaron Phypers accused her of affair

Denise Richards was pictured for the first time since her estranged husband Aaron Phypers accused her of having an affair amid their ugly divorce. The 54-year-old actress brushed off the drama as she enjoyed lunch at Cross Creek in Malibu with her daughters Sami, 21, and Eloise, 13, but was notably missing her wedding ring. She even shared a lighthearted moment, snapping a photo of Sami and her dog on her phone. The Wild Things star — who returned to social media with heartbreaking message on Sunday — opted for a casual look, wearing a navy tank top tucked into light blue jeans. Richards completed the outfit with a wide-brim straw hat atop her head as well as a pair of sunglasses. Sami sported a white tank top with a pair of low-rise blue jeans. Meanwhile Eloise rocked a pair of black overalls over a grey t-shirt. It comes after the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum's ex claimed he caught Denise cheating on him, leading to the fight that prompted him to file for divorce. Phypers, 52, filed for divorce from Richards earlier this month after six years of marriage, listing July 4 as the official date of separation. Phypers — whom Richards has accused of physical abuse — alleged he discovered that Denise had cheated on him earlier this year in an interview with TMZ. The businessman claimed he found texts between Richards and another man on her laptop, including several selfies and affectionate messages like her wishing him 'sweet dreams.' He also claimed other messages suggested Richards and the other man were planning a hotel rendezvous, with her trying to sneak him into her room. Phypers claimed he confronted Richards about the alleged affair, and they decided to remain together. But a major July 4th weekend dispute ultimately prompted him to file for divorce. Richards has claimed the altercation started when Phypers verbally abused her and demanded his phone. Phypers said his phone was missing for over a day, and when he asked Richards about it, she allegedly hit and scratched him. He later found the phone smashed in the recycling bin. He believes Richards smashed his phone because it had photos of the texts proving she had the alleged affair. It comes after the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum's ex claimed he caught Denise cheating on him, leading to the fight that prompted him to file for divorce He claimed Richards texted his mother that weekend, stating her intention to divorce him, which prompted him to file for divorce first. Phypers filed for divorce July 7, citing irreconcilable differences. While Richards has yet to formally respond in court to Phypers' petition, which seeks spousal support, she has made serious allegations of abuse against him. On Wednesday, the former actress asked a Los Angeles judge for a restraining order – claiming her estranged spouse had routinely been violent towards her during their marriage and had blacked her eye after becoming paranoid about listening devices concealed in potted plants. Phypers has denied the claims, and says the black eye seen on Richards in a shocking photo included in her latest explosive court filing was actually the result of a drunken fall. A judge granted a domestic violence restraining order against Phypers. Phypers claims she sought the domestic violence restraining order to deflect attention from her alleged affair. He reiterated that he did not physically abuse Richards, stating, 'I did not hit my wife in the face, ever.' He also claimed Richards 'falls down a lot. And it's embarrassing, and people know it', after previously claiming the black eye was the result of a drunken fall. The pair's marriage was plagued by other issues as well. Phypers shared photos from inside their shared home, showing the residence in disarray and littered with numerous items. He claims that he and his family were burdened with the responsibility of caring for Richards' properties and animals. A source close to Phypers recently insisted to that he has never raised a hand to Richards, and dismissed the allegations as lies. The insider said: 'This is consistent with the ongoing untruthfulness of Denise Richards who is trying to hide her alcohol problem.' Referring to a photo of her with a black eye which she submitted as evidence in her petition for the restraining order, the insider said: 'That photo was taken in winter 2022 and the fact is, she was drunk at the time and fell coming up the steps to Aaron's clinic Q360.' 'She fell and caught the corner of her eye on the stairs and then came up to the office where they treated her and put ice on it.' 'There were lots of people in the office at the time, all of whom saw what happened. Aaron has never touched her and never would.' Richards has previously spoken about her addiction battle and, in 2023, sparked concern when she appeared to slur her words during an episode of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Phypers also issued his own statement denouncing his estranged wife's recent allegations, saying: 'I want to address recent rumors and speculation that have surfaced regarding my relationship with my wife, Denise Richards. 'Let me be unequivocally clear: I have never physically or emotionally abused Denise - or anyone. These accusations are completely false and deeply hurtful.' 'Denise and I, like many couples, have faced our share of challenges, but any suggestion of abuse is categorically untrue.' 'I have always tried to approach our marriage with love, patience and respect. I ask for privacy as we navigate personal matters, and I hope that the public and media will refrain from spreading harmful and baseless claims.' The divorce battle began two weeks ago when Phypers filed to end his marriage – blindsiding Richards who had said publicly that she never wanted to go through a divorce again. Along with the filing, he asked for spousal support totaling $105,000-a-month and said his income was 'zero' following the closure of his clinic last October. As a result, he relies on his wife's income which he claimed in court was $250,000-a-month, most of it earned via OnlyFans and her now canceled reality show Denise Richards & Her Wild Things. Richards admitted to facing challenges in her marriage earlier this year during an episode of her reality show Denise Richards and Her Wild Things. The mom-of-three said in a March episode of the E! reality show: 'It's not easy being married to me, but this is it, I'm done. 'I'm never getting divorced again. Even if we hate each other, I'm not gonna f****** get divorced.' For his part, Phypers chimed in that they might even live in separate houses, but insisted, 'We're not gonna hate each other.' Richards was previously married to wild child actor Charlie Sheen who she divorced in April 2006 while pregnant with their second child Sami. Along with divorce papers, she also slapped Sheen, 59, with a restraining order banning him from coming any closer than 300ft from his ex-wife and daughters. In 2010, she was awarded sole legal custody of their children with sources citing 'marital turmoil, sobriety issues, and criminal problems' for the decision. The latter refers to Sheen's arrest on Christmas Day 2009 for assaulting his third wife Brooke Mueller in an Aspen, Colorado, property during a festive break. Sheen was later convicted of misdemeanor assault and slapped with 30 days in rehab, 30 days of probation, and 36 hours of anger management. Richards moved on with her life and adopted a third daughter Eloise in June 2011 and started dating Phypers in December 2017 before marrying him less than a year later in September 2018. The marriage got off to a rocky start when it was revealed the pair had begun dating before Phypers' divorce from Desperate Housewives actress Nicolette Sheridan was finalized. Phypers later adopted Richards' daughter Eloise.

Braless Lena Dunham embraces Natalie Portman while filming new Netflix rom-com

Lena Dunham excitedly embraced Natalie Portman, whom she teamed up with to co-produce her new Netflix rom-com Good Sex, in Manhattan's East Village on Monday. The 39-year-old writer-director bared her tattooed sleeves in a $148 GapStudio 'Draped Denim Slip' maxi-dress, matching blue neckerchief, and black Nike sneakers. Lena - who boasts 3M Instagram followers - shared a snap of her fit on Monday captioned: 'Really enjoying dressing for set and beyond this summer.' And the 44-year-old Oscar winner looked comfy in a beige T-shirt, grey sweatpants, and white Keds 'Champion Canvas Lace-Up' sneakers. Natalie (born Neta-Lee Hershlag) hauled a tote emblazoned with The New Yorker and she wore dark sunglasses over her make-up free complexion. Portman later got into costume as her newly-single character, successful couples therapist Ally, who's caught in a love triangle very similar to Celine Song's recent rom-com Materialists. The former child star slipped her slim 5ft3in figure into a $2,048 Prada 'Pleated Sablé' shirt, black mini-skirt, $1,115 Jacquemus 'The Calino' ring handbag, and patent leather long-tongue loafers. Natalie - clutching a to-go cup from Café Chrystie - also wore cat-eye sunglasses and $320 Jacquemus 'The Rond Carré' earrings as part of her costume. Portman's younger onscreen leading man - a Brooklyn hipster - will be played by Gen-Z singer Role Model (born Tucker Pillsbury) who, at 28, is 16 years her junior. The Israeli-born, Long Island-raised stunner's older onscreen leading man - successful Manhattanite Alan - will be played by Mark Ruffalo who, at 57, is 13 years her senior. The four-time Oscar nominee could be seen walking and talking with Dunham as they headed to the set. 'We are about a quarter through our shoot,' the eight-time Emmy nominee told THR last week. 'And as expected, no spoilers here — Natalie Portman is a very, very good actress. It's playing with the romantic comedy form to try to say something about our expectations about relationships, about love and about sex. I think my favorite romantic comedies — whether it's When Harry Met Sally, or Four Weddings and a Funeral, or Love and Basketball — I mean, these are movies that challenge our perceptions about what love is in the era that we live in. 'So that was the goal here, and it's just a joy to be with Natalie, Rashida Jones, Mark Ruffalo, Meg Ryan, and Tucker Pillsbury a.k.a. Role Model. They're all such interesting performers who are bringing such specificity to these parts, and I'm really enjoying my time in the trenches of this genre.' Indeed, Lena successfully courted rom-com queen Meg Ryan to play a mystery role in Good Sex after running into her at Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert in London last August. She couldn't be a lovelier person,' Dunham revealed to Variety earlier this month. 'Shout-out Taylor — thank you for that. She brings everyone together; she makes the world go round.' As for the music, the Nora Ephron protégée enlisted her British-Peruvian husband of four years, Luis Felber, to compose the score just like he did with her previous projects Too Much and Sharp Stick. Back in January, Netflix won the bidding war in order to procure Good Sex for an eye-popping $55M. 'I really just want people to sit on a couch with their moms and their besties and lean in,' Lena told Variety. 'I love watching other filmmakers fight for the theatrical-release element — but I don't think this will live or die by that.' HarperCollins will publish Dunham's second memoir Famesick on September 1. Lena successfully courted rom-com queen Meg Ryan (R) to play a mystery role in Good Sex after running into her at Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert in London last August Darren Aronofsky's 2010 psychological thriller Black Swan - which earned Natalie her Academy Award - is returning to over 200 IMAX theaters on August 21 and 24 in honor of the 15th anniversary. Portman famously fell for her ex-husband - choreographer/dancer Benjamin Millepied - on the set of Black Swan in 2009 while he was still dating Isabella Boylston. Last year, the Fountain of Youth action star divorced the 48-year-old Frenchman following 11 years of marriage amid cheating allegations, and they're co-parents of son Aleph, 14; and daughter Amalia, 8.
