At least 81 killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza, as Trump reiterates calls for ceasefire

ITV News17 hours ago

US President Donald Trump has reiterated calls for a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, as Gaza's health authorities said 81 people were killed in Israeli strikes in the past 24 hours.
In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, he wrote: 'MAKE THE DEAL IN GAZA. GET THE HOSTAGES BACK!!!'
It comes as an Israeli official said plans were being made for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to travel to Washington DC in the coming weeks, a sign there may be movement on a new deal.
On Friday, Trump raised expectations Friday for a deal, saying there could be a ceasefire agreement within the next week.
Taking questions from reporters, he said, 'We're working on Gaza and trying to get it taken care of.'
Despite an eight-week ceasefire reached just as Trump was taking office earlier this year, attempts since then to bring the sides toward a new agreement have failed.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military on Sunday ordered a mass evacuation of Palestinians in large swaths of northern Gaza, an early target of the war that has been severely damaged by multiple rounds of fighting.
Col. Avichay Adraee, a military spokesperson, posted the order on social media. It includes multiple neighbourhoods in eastern and northern Gaza City, as well as Jabaliya refugee camp.
The military will expand its escalating attacks to the city's northern section, calling for people to move southward to the Muwasi area in southern Gaza, Adraee said.
Hundreds of thousands of people are in northern Gaza following their return during a ceasefire earlier this year.
In Iran, at least 71 people were killed in an Israeli attack on Tehran's Evin prison, Iran's judiciary said.
The attack took place on 23 June and hit several prison buildings and prompted concerns from rights groups about the safety of the inmates.
Evin prison is a notorious facility where many political activists have been held.
Judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir posted on the office's official Mizan news agency website Sunday that those killed included staff, soldiers, prisoners and members of visiting families.
Iran had not previously announced any death figures.
On Sunday, Iran confirmed that top prosecutor Ali Ghanaatkar, whose prosecution of dissidents, including Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, led to widespread criticism by human rights groups, had been killed in the attack and would be buried at a shrine in Qom.

Trump gives telling update on his relationship with former 'First Buddy' Musk after billionaire reignited feud

President Donald Trump and his former First Buddy Elon Musk have hardly spoken since their spectacular falling out over the Big Beautiful Bill. Trump revealed he's had little contact with the world's richest man since he departed the administration earlier this month and tried to blow up Trump's landmark bill on his way out the door. 'I haven't spoken to him much, but I think Elon is a wonderful guy,' Trump answered diplomatically when asked about their relationship on Fox's Sunday Morning Futures. Trump's remarks came just a day after Musk reignited the feud on Saturda y by again weighing in on Trump's $2.8trillion spending bill. 'The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country,' Musk wrote. 'Utterly insane and destructive.' But Trump didn't acknowledge the latest comments on Sunday, instead opting to offer muted praise for his former ally. 'He's a smart guy,' Trump said. 'I know he's going to do well always. He actually campaigned with me... in the end he got upset and that just wasn't appropriate.' Musk launched an extraordinary attack on Trump and his bill via X after his work with DOGE dried up. The billionaire SpaceX founder accused Trump of being 'in the Epstein files', and said Trump could not have won the 2024 presidential election without him. But Trump has repeatedly suggested Musk was more upset with his decision to roll back a Biden-era electric vehicle mandate which would have encouraged an uptick in Tesla purchases. 'The EV mandate is a tough thing for him,' Trump said of Musk on Sunday. 'I don't want everybody to have to have an electric car. 'I campaigned on choice - gasoline, hybrid. I love the electric cars, I think it's fantastic, but not everybody wants that.' Musk had spent the start of the year slashing the federal government's programs through his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), but saw the $150 billion he claimed to have saved wiped out by the spending increases in Trump's bill. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told the Daily Mail at the time: 'This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted.' Trump's sweeping Big Beautiful Bill encapsulates much of his domestic agenda, covering everything from tax breaks and immigration to national defense and energy. Republicans say the bill is crucial because there would be a tax increase after December when tax breaks from Trump's first term expire. The legislation contains roughly $3.8 trillion in tax cuts. Earlier this month, Musk's opposition to the legislation saw his time in Trump's White House come to an acrimonious end as he tore into the president The existing tax rates and brackets would become permanent under the bill. It temporarily would add new tax breaks that Trump campaigned on: no taxes on tips, overtime pay or some automotive loans, along with a bigger $6,000 deduction in the Senate draft for older adults who earn no more than $75,000 a year. It would boost the $2,000 child tax credit to $2,200 under the Senate proposal. Families at lower income levels would not see the full amount. The bill would also fund the hiring of 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, and would provide Homeland Security with a new $10 billion fund for grants for states that help with federal immigration enforcement and deportation actions. For the Pentagon, the bill would provide billions for ship building, munitions systems, and quality of life measures for servicemen and women, as well as $25 billion for the development of the Golden Dome missile defense system. The Defense Department would have $1 billion for border security. To help partly offset the lost tax revenue and new spending, Republicans aim to cut back some long-running government programs: Medicaid, food stamps, green energy incentives and others.

Benjamin Netanyahu corruption trial delayed on diplomatic and security grounds

An Israeli court has cancelled this week's hearings in Benjamin Netanyahu's long-running corruption trial, accepting a request made by the prime minister on classified diplomatic and security grounds. 'Following the explanations given … we partially accept the request and cancel at this stage Mr Netanyahu's hearings scheduled' for this week, the Jerusalem district court said in its ruling, published online by Netanyahu's Likud party. The ruling said that new reasons provided by Netanyahu, the head of Israel's spy agency the Mossad and the military intelligence chief justified cancelling the hearings. It comes after Donald Trump last week called for the case to be thrown out. In remarks on social media, the US president suggested the trial could interfere with Netanyahu's ability to join negotiations with the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Iran, adding that the US was 'not going to stand' for the continued prosecution, prompting Netanyahu to thank him in a message on X. In a social media post, Trump described the case against the Israeli premier as a 'witch hunt', saying the trial 'should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero'. Netanyahu was indicted in 2019 on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust – all of which he denies. He has cast the trial against him as an orchestrated leftwing witch-hunt meant to topple a democratically elected rightwing leader. In one of the cases, he and his wife, Sara, are accused of accepting more than $260,000 worth of luxury goods such as cigars, jewellery and champagne from billionaires in exchange for political favours. In two others, Netanyahu is accused of attempting to negotiate more favourable coverage from two Israeli media outlets. The prime minister has requested multiple postponements to the trial since it began in May 2020. Netanyahu's lawyers had asked the court to excuse him from testifying over the next two weeks so he could focus on security issues after a ceasefire with Iran and amid ongoing fighting in Gaza where Israeli hostages are held. They submitted the prime minister's schedule to the court to demonstrate 'the national need for the prime minister to devote all his time and energy to the political, national and security issues at hand'. The court initially rejected the lawyers' request, but said in its ruling on Sunday that it had changed its judgment after hearing arguments from the prime minister and other senior officials. A spokesperson for the Israeli prosecution declined to comment on Trump's post. Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid said last week that Trump 'should not interfere in a judicial trial in an independent country'. Trump said Netanyahu was 'right now' negotiating a deal with Hamas, though neither leader provided details, and officials from both sides have voiced scepticism over prospects for a ceasefire soon. On Friday, the Republican president told reporters he believed a ceasefire was close. With Reuters and Agence France-Presse

British Israeli soldier killed in Gaza, reports say

He was named locally as 20-year-old Sergeant Yisrael Natan Rosenfeld from the city of Ra'anana. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said it is 'looking into reports that an IDF soldier who died in combat in Gaza is a British national'. The IDF soldier, of the 601st Combat Engineering Battalion, was killed by an explosive device on Sunday, the Times of Israel reported. The paper said Mr Rosenfeld moved to Israel from London with his family 11 years ago. Israel has been operating in Gaza since the Hamas militant group's October 7 2023 attack on Israel. More than 860 Israeli soldiers have been killed since the war began, including more than 400 during the fighting in Gaza. US-led ceasefire efforts have repeatedly stalled. The Israeli offensive has devastated Gaza and killed more than 56,000 people, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, a branch of the Hamas government. The death toll is by far the highest in any round of Israeli-Palestinian fighting.
