Call for safer, modern upgrade to East-West Highway
While it has served the nation for over four decades, the highway also has a reputation for being one of the most dangerous roads to drive on due to the hilly terrain, eerie darkness at night and frequent encounters with wildlife.
The government has made efforts to improve safety along the highway but serious accidents involving humans and wildlife still occur from time to time.
Evidence of these incidents can be seen in the damaged, often non-functioning guardrails and the occasional pothole-ridden or uneven stretches of road.
It is time for the government to seriously consider constructing a new East-West Highway – one that better serves the people and provides safer passage for motorists and wildlife.
The new highway could incorporate multiple viaduct sections, creating larger wildlife crossings beneath and significantly reducing the risk of human-wildlife conflicts.
Additionally, a redesigned route could help straighten the current winding alignment, while integrating traffic-calming features to make the journey safer and less stressful for drivers.
A good example of an effective upgrade can be seen in the improvements made to Federal Route 5 for the West Coast Expressway, where drivers can confidently travel at the designated speed limit.
Malaysia has many globally renowned civil infrastructure companies with the expertise to balance wildlife preservation and road safety in large-scale projects.
Regardless, Malaysian companies have proven their capabilities, having constructed highways that span nearly the entire Peninsular Malaysia, including the ongoing Pan Borneo Highway project.
At present, the East-West Highway is the most viable option to travel between the northern east and west coast states.
Alternative routes, such as the Second East–West Highway through Simpang Pulai and Gua Musang, are equally dangerous, while other options, like detouring through Selangor and using the East Coast Expressway, are significantly longer.
It is hoped that the government will soon develop a comprehensive solution to prevent further accidents and wildlife roadkills.

Betamek's 1Q revenue rises on diversification strategy
Betamek executive director Muhammad Fauzi Abd Ghani KUALA LUMPUR: Betamek Bhd recorded a net profit of RM5.39mil in its first financial quarter ended June 30, 2025, up from RM4.88mil in the year-ago quarter, which translates into an earnings per share of 1.2 sen as compared to 1.08 sen previously. The original design manufacturer (ODM) reported revenue of RM56.88mil, higher than RM49.97mil in the previous comparative quarter. It said the growth was owing to higher sales of vehicle accessories and the initial contributions from industrial instruments and consumer electronics, reflecting early success from Betamek's diversification strategy. During the quarter, the group's vehicle audio and visual products segment continued to be the primary revenue contributor, accounting for RM38.9 million, or 68.4% of total revenue. The vehicle accessories segment contributed RM11.3mil, while the non-automotive products segment accounted for RM6.6mil. The Malaysian market remained the group's key contributor - accounting for 97.2% of total revenue while the balance was derived from Hong Kong and Japan. Betamek has declared a first interim dividend of one sen per share with ex-date on Aug 6, 2025, and payment on Aug 20, 2025. "We're pleased to begin the financial year on solid footing, driven by ongoing progress in our diversification strategy and operational improvements, particularly at Sanshin Malaysia. "This performance reflects our ability to adapt and grow sustainably even as the market normalises following a record year," said Betamek executive director Muhammad Fauzi Abd Ghani in a statement. He said the group remains focused on customer diversification as part of its long-term strategy to reduce reliance on a single customer and capture new growth opportunities in the automotive sector. "While the Malaysian automotive market is expected to stabilise following an all-time high total industry volume of 816,747 units in 2024, Betamek remains confident in the robust demand from affordable vehicle segments, led by its anchor customer Perodua, which retains a dominant market share and a strong order backlog of 90,000 units," he added.
