Stocks slump on profit-taking

Express Tribune24-03-2025
Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday took a deep dive after hitting record highs last week as the KSE-100 index plunged over 2,000 points primarily due to institutional profit-taking across various sectors.
Market jitters were compounded by reports of the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) disapproval of policy changes including a reduction in property transaction rates, lowering March 2025 tax target and slashing industrial power tariffs, which weighed heavily on investor sentiment.
Additionally, the negative impact of rising Karachi Inter-bank Offered Rate (Kibor) and an increase in royalty on cement manufacturers in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) further contributed to the market's downturn.
According to Ahsan Mehanti of Arif Habib Corp, stocks closed sharply lower amid institutional profit-taking. Reports of IMF's disapproval of reduction in property transaction rates and lowering of March tax target amid revenue collection shortfall further contributed to the downturn, he said. Mehanti added that higher Kibor as well as reports of no agreement with the IMF on reduction in industrial power tariffs played the role of catalysts in bearish close at the PSX.
At the end of trading, the benchmark KSE-100 index recorded a slump of 2,002.56 points, or 1.69%, and settled at 116,439.62.
In its review, Topline Securities commented that the KSE-100 index ended in the red with a loss of 2,003 points. The market faced downward pressure due to IMF's concerns over the lack of adjustments to electricity tariffs and no reduction in property taxes, as reported in the media, it said. Additionally, the proposed increase in royalty on cement manufacturers in K-P contributed to the negative sentiment.
The decline was primarily driven by Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC), Engro Corporation, Fauji Fertiliser Company, Pakistan Petroleum and Mari Petroleum, which pulled the index down by 811 points, Topline noted.
Arif Habib Limited (AHL), in its report, stated that selling pressure hit the KSE-100 near the all-time high levels.
Some 16 shares rose while 79 fell with TRG Pakistan (+2.92%), Pakistan Aluminium Beverage Cans (+5.5%) and Atlas Honda (+3.34%) contributing the most to the index gains. On the flip side, OGDC (-4.04%), Pakistan Petroleum (-3.59%) and Mari Petroleum (-2.5%) were the biggest index drags, it said.
Systems Limited announced CY24 earnings per share (EPS) of Rs25.6, down 14% year-on-year. The EPS for 4QCY24 came in at Rs6.9, up 32% year-on-year. In addition, the company announced a final cash dividend of Rs6 per share and a stock split of 5:1, reducing the face value of each share from Rs10 to Rs2. As a result, the total number of ordinary shares would increase from 292.9 million to 1.46 billion, AHL pointed out.
"We are looking forward to the KSE-100 finding support between 115k and 116k this week," it added.
JS Global analyst Muhammad Hasan Ather remarked that profit-taking continued at the start of the week, with the benchmark KSE-100 closing 2,003 points lower at 116,440. Selling was primarily led by stocks of oil and fertiliser sectors, he said. The most active stocks of the day were Pak Elektron, Cnergyico PK and TRG Pakistan with trading in 28.6 million, 19.2 million and 15.7 million shares, respectively.
"Moving forward, while profit-taking is expected to continue, we advise investors to view any dip as a buying opportunity, particularly in oil & gas, cement and technology sectors," Ather added.
Overall trading volumes decreased to 312 million shares compared with Friday's tally of 369.1 million. Shares of 468 companies were traded. Of these, 124 stocks closed higher, 266 fell and 78 remained unchanged. The value of shares traded during the day was Rs21 billion.
Pak Elektron was the volume leader with trading in 28.6 million shares, falling Rs2.31 to close at Rs45.87. It was followed by Cnergyico PK with 19.2 million shares, falling Rs0.04 to close at Rs7.94 and TRG Pakistan with 15.7 million shares, gaining Rs1.99 to close at Rs70.20. During the day, foreign investors bought shares worth Rs498.1 million, the National Clearing Company of Pakistan reported.

PSX rally continues as KSE-100 gains over 400 points

Bulls continued to make further inroads at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) with the benchmark KSE-100 Index crossing the 131,000 level, a new record high, during the opening minutes of trading on Thursday. During trading, the KSE-100 hit an intra-day high of 131,325.10. At 10:50am, the benchmark index was hovering at 130,745.75 level, an increase of 401.72 points or 0.31%. Buying was observed in the energy sector, with index-heavy stocks including OGDC, MARI, PPL, PSO, and WAFI trading in the green. Analysts attribute the market's record-breaking trajectory to aggressive institutional buying, strong earnings expectations and positive macroeconomic indicators. On Wednesday, the PSX delivered a historic performance, surpassing the psychological milestone of 130,000 points for the first time ever. The benchmark KSE-100 Index soared by 2,144 points or 1.67% to settle at 130,344 points. Globally, Asian shares edged higher on Thursday as investors braced for a key US jobs report that may justify imminent rate cuts by the Federal Reserve and waited on the passage of a massive US tax and spending bill in Congress. Wall Street climbed overnight to close at new record highs after President Donald Trump announced that the US has struck a trade deal with Vietnam, including a 20% tariff on exports to the US. That fuelled hopes that more deals will be forthcoming, with negotiations underway for a trade agreement with India. The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan advanced 0.2% to hover just below a near four-year top. Japan's Nikkei was flat. China's blue chips edged up 0.2%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 0.6% after data showed China's services activity expanded at the slowest pace in nine months in June. Both Nasdaq futures and S&P 500 futures were little changed in Asia. Investors were waiting for Trump's massive tax and spending bill to pass the House of Representatives for possible final approval. The bill is expected to add $3.3 trillion to the national debt, slash taxes and reduce social safety net programs. This is an intra-day update

Crypto mining, other sectors: IMF rejects Pakistan's subsidised power tariffs proposal

ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has rejected Pakistan's proposal to offer subsidised electricity tariffs to crypto mining and certain industrial sectors, warning that such moves would create new complications in the already strained power sector. Testifying before the Senate Standing Committee on Power, chaired by Senator Mohsin Aziz, Secretary Power Dr Fakhray Alam Irfan stated that all major power sector initiatives must be cleared by the IMF. He noted that although Pakistan has surplus electricity, particularly in winter months, the IMF is cautious about any pricing mechanisms that could distort the market. In September 2024, the Power Division proposed a six-month incremental consumption package (October–March) at marginal cost (Rs 23/kWh), based on last year's usage. However, after two months of discussion, the IMF only approved a three-month version, citing potential market distortions. The curious case of Bitcoin mining in Pakistan In a subsequent plan shared in November 2024, the Power Division suggested a targeted marginal cost-based package (Rs 22–23/kWh) for energy-intensive industries such as copper and aluminium melting, data centers, and crypto mining, arguing it would boost consumption of surplus electricity and reduce capacity charges. Still, the IMF rejected the proposal, stating it resembled sector-specific tax holidays that have historically created imbalances. 'As of now, the IMF has not agreed,' Dr Irfan confirmed, adding that the plan is also under review by the World Bank and other development partners. He emphasised that the government has not withdrawn the proposal and remains engaged with international institutions to refine it. During the session, a heated debate also emerged on the government's recent agreement with scheduled banks to reduce the circular debt stock of Rs 1.275 trillion. Senator Shibli Faraz criticised the deal, stating that banks were 'forced at gunpoint' to offer the loans. 'If I were a banker, I would have refused,' he said, warning that the burden would fall on consumers through future levies. Secretary Power rebutted this claim, clarifying that no new levies have been imposed. He stated that the existing Debt Servicing Surcharge (DSS) of Rs 3.23/kWh will continue for the next five to six years to recover the amount. He also highlighted that circular debt inflows have been reduced through timely subsidy injections. On consumer facilitation, Dr Irfan reported that over 500,000 people have downloaded the 'Apna Meter Apni Reading' app, allowing users to upload photos of their meter readings to potentially reduce inflated billing. He said the app will soon be extended to K-Electric (KE) users. The committee also expressed displeasure over the absence of the Federal Minister for Power, who was expected to answer questions on Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and sectoral inefficiencies. Senator Mohsin Aziz said the establishment of certain IPPs was an injustice and questioned why excess profits have not been recovered. Senator Shibli Faraz alleged that inflated project costs were used to justify higher returns, adding that no real steps have been taken to curb the circular debt crisis. 'The public is bearing the burden of government inefficiencies,' he said. Senators raised concerns about forced load shedding, especially in areas like Tharparkar, Matiari, and Umerkot, where daily outages last up to 14 hours, despite consumers paying their bills. Senator Poojo Bheel accused local officials of corruption, claiming they take bribes for illegal connections and restore disconnected supplies for a 'fee'. He emphasised that even paying customers are facing denial of their rights due to systemic failure. In response, Dr Irfan explained that revenue-based load shedding occurs in areas with losses exceeding 20%, citing a tragic case where a SEPCO employee was fatally stabbed during a disconnection drive. KE's Chief Distribution Officer Sadia Dada said that out of 2,100 feeders, about 30% face load shedding due to high electricity theft, often through Kundas (illegal hooks) in informal settlements. She said consumer bills are now offered in instalments to ease payment difficulties. Dr Irfan stated that 58% of consumers fall under the 'protected' category, paying Rs 10 per unit. With the approval of international partners, the government will allocate Rs 250 billion in subsidies, while also rolling out more tech-based solutions for theft control. So far, 500,000 people have downloaded the meter reading app, with 250,000 registered users. Senator Haji Hidayatullah raised an over-billing case involving a Rs 2.3 million charge on a property in Peshawar that had already been cleared by PESCO. He claimed PESCO officials offered to settle the bill for Rs 300,000, calling it blatant corruption. The Secretary Power assured that the matter will be investigated. The CEO of HAZECO also briefed the committee on issues in Sub-Division Lora Chowk, including estimated billing, feeder faults, and pending ELR work under release numbers 46241, 51911, and 51910. Following extensive deliberations, the committee expressed displeasure at the Power Division's repeated deflection of questions and directed the department to submit comprehensive answers at the next meeting. In record-breaking streak, PSX hits 130k

Listen to article Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) extended its remarkable ascent on Wednesday as the benchmark KSE-100 index smashed past the 130,000 milestone for the first time in history, gaining 2,145 points day-on-day. The bourse saw robust buying by big investors while low returns on bonds pushed more market players to build their investment portfolios. The upbeat investor sentiment provided the rally a strong support, driving stock prices higher across key sectors such as banking and communications. Subsequently, the KSE-100 index closed the day higher by 1.67% at an unprecedented level of 130,344.03. "Increase in tax rates on income from debt securities, along with the shift in mutual fund taxation to a proportionate investment holding structure, prompted a shift in flows from fixed income to equities," AKD Securities' Director Research Muhammad Awais Ashraf told The Express Tribune. Additionally, with inflation falling to a nine-year low in FY25, the likelihood of further interest rate cuts strengthened the outlook for equities and boosted investor confidence, he added. KTrade Securities wrote in its market review that the banking sector continued to deliver strong performance, propelling the index to new record levels over the past two sessions. Wednesday's rally was primarily fuelled by robust gains in stocks of UBL, MCB Bank, Bank AL Habib, Meezan Bank, HBL and National Bank of Pakistan. Arif Habib Limited (AHL) reported that the index hit the intermediate-term target of 130,000 on Wednesday. Some 61 shares advanced while 39 declined as UBL (+5.51%), MCB Bank (+5.66%) and Bank AL Habib (+4.65%) contributed the most to index gains. Conversely, Pakgen Power (-4.56%), Cherat Cement (-1.57%) and Lucky Cement (-0.27%) dragged the index down, it said. Among economic news, Pakistan's trade deficit stood at $2.32 billion in June 2025, showing a 9.4% improvement compared to May. Meanwhile, Mari Energies and Ghani Chemical Industries signed a term sheet to explore the feasibility of processing vent and exhaust gases from the Sachal Gas Processing Complex, located in Daharki, Sindh. Following a strong 12% rise from the June lows, the index reached the key target level of 130,000, AHL said, anticipating that the momentum would continue, with support rising to 127,000. Topline Securities observed in its review that bulls went on a rampage as the KSE-100 index shattered records, storming past the 130,000 milestone. The index hit intra-day high of 2,346 points before closing at 130,344, up by a solid 2,145 points. Fuelled by aggressive institutional buying and a wave of fresh fiscal year optimism, the rally showed no signs of cooling. With fixed-income yields offering little excitement, investors were rotating into equities in search of alpha, giving the market a powerful tailwind, it said. Banks led the charge where blue-chip names including UBL, MCB Bank, Bank AL Habib, Meezan Bank, Habib Bank and National Bank of Pakistan stole the limelight and collectively pumped 1,286 points into the index. In an interesting move, the pharma sector made a comeback. Searle Pakistan hit its upper lock, while Citi Pharma, Haleon Pakistan and Abbott Laboratories saw healthy investor appetite, added Topline. Overall trading volumes slipped to 1.026 billion shares compared with Tuesday's tally of 1.033 billion. The value of shares traded was Rs49.3 billion. Shares of 473 companies were traded. Of these, 256 stocks closed higher, 192 fell and 25 remained unchanged. WorldCall Telecom was the volume leader with trading in 89.9 million shares, gaining Rs0.08 to close at Rs1.61. It was followed by The Bank of Punjab with 89.5 million shares, rising Rs0.62 to close at Rs11.54 and Kohinoor Spinning Mills with 46.3 million shares, losing Rs0.27 to close at Rs6.12. Foreign investors sold shares worth Rs698 million, the National Clearing Company reported.
