Sligo to get extra EV charging hubs

An allocation of almost €8 million will be provided to support grants for recharging infrastructure at the selected sites, with chargers set to be in place by the end of this year. These new sites will deliver 175 new fast and ultra-fast recharging points, at 53 locations along the national road network, making it quicker and easier for EV drivers to top up on longer journeys.
The announcement is part of a wider plan to build a reliable recharging network across the country, with the distance between recharging hubs to be 60km or less.
The recharging hubs are funded through the Light Duty Vehicle (LDV) initiative operated by Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI), and delivered by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
This phase of the initiative focused on over 1,200km of national single carriageway roads. Enterprises such as petrol/service station operators, car park owners, hotels, supermarkets/retail outlets, and others with publicly accessible sites, could apply through a competitive grant process for funding. The total allocation for this aspect is €7.9 million.
Applegreen, Carraroe, Sligo N4; Whiteside's SuperValu, Ballisodare, N4; Surlis SuperValu, Tubbercurry, N17; Drive Service stations Ltd, Sligo, N17.
Sligo Leitrim TD, Frank Feighan has welcomed the announcement of the nomination of 7 sites across Leitrim, South Donegal, and Sligo.
'It is vital for this region and constituency that we expand our EV charging network to facilitate EV owners who visit this region for either work or leisure purposes.
'I would like to see more of our smaller villages and towns get the funding to provide town centre fast charging EV points to ensure that more and more people have the opportunity to visit our locality including EV owners without the concern of range anxiety,' said Deputy Feighan.
The nominating sites in Leitrim are: Rooney's Supervalu, Manorhamilton and Rosebank Retail Park, Carrick-on-Shannon.

Planning permission granted to improve parking facilities and public transport options at Cork train station

In October 2024 Iarnród Éireann lodged a planning application to improve parking facilities and public transport set down areas at Millstreet Train Station. The application lodged with Cork County Council, requested permission to provide an additional 46 parking spaces at the station, seven of which will be EV charging stations. The works will also include the provision of ten bicycle parking spaces, a bicycle shelter and the creation of a bus set down/interchange facility. Subject to funding being allocated, it is anticipated that construction will commence in late 2025 and will be completed in mid-2026. Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North West Aindrias Moynihan welcomed the 'good' news for the train station which caters for a vast hinterland. 'It is good news for Millstreet with Cork County Council granting Irish Rail planning permission for a range of upgrade works at Millstreet Train Station. These planned works will include car parking, improved bus and cycle access for people using the station." Deputy Moynihan said Millstreet Train Station offers a great service. 'This is a big milestone in improving public transport locally. It is important to note that people still have the right to appeal this decision. Irish Rail submitted the planning application last year and their next step will be to secure funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA) to progress to construction. 'As a regular user of the local train service, I'm very conscious of the great service it offers as well as the pressure in sometimes accessing parking. Last summer I was pleased to show the Minister for Transport the site and the plans. I have continued to pursue this on behalf of locals. There is still lots of work ahead yet, but a big milestone has been reached,' he added.

New law will allow private wires to free up electricity connection

The 'private wires' policy agreed by Cabinet represents a major shake-up in the way electricity can be delivered and distributed. ESB Networks is currently the only operator legally permitted to manage electricity connections. It installs and owns the cables and wires. The semi-state company is under significant pressure as demand for power grows, with delays in connections frustrating businesses and domestic customers. Minister for Climate, Environment and Energy, Darragh O'Brien announced yesterday that a parallel system had been agreed that would operate alongside ESB Networks. Legislation to underpin it would be given priority status, with drafting to begin shortly and enactment expected within 12 months. The law will put the energy regulator, the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU), in charge of administering private-wires applications. The plan brought to Cabinet highlights several scenarios where it envisages private wires will be frequently sought. A 'generator' such as a wind farm or solar park could provide a direct connection to an adjacent factory without both sides having to connect to the national electricity grid. An existing generator will be able to share its grid connection with a new generator from another firm, saving the new installation waiting for a separate connection. A firm that supplies its own electricity – from a rooftop solar array, for example – will be able to provide electricity directly to a neighbouring customer. ADVERTISEMENT An EV owner will be able to lay their own cable for on-street charging – subject to planning permission. Mr O'Brien stressed the new system would not grant participants any automatic rights of access over third-party lands and that planning permission would still be required for most installations. I will also ensure that the CRU is resourced to take on this area However, he said it would enable a faster, more flexible response to the needs of a growing economy. 'This is a very significant reform of the rules on electricity infrastructure,' he said. 'I, and officials in my department, are now focused on the next steps. 'Primary legislation to amend the Electricity Regulation Act allowing for private wires will be enacted. 'Supporting regulations to define standards and processes for granting permission for private wires will be adopted. 'I will also ensure that the CRU is resourced to take on this significant new area of regulation.' The move followed a consultation with industry and the wider public last year and was supported by ESB Networks. The department said the current system would remain the preferred route to connection in most cases.
