Threads is testing spoiler text, Zuckerberg says
Threads, Meta's microblogging platform, is testing spoiler text, according to a post from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Spoiler text refers to words (or images) that are grayed out in a post and only become readable if you manually click to see them. As the name suggests, spoiler text is often used on platforms like Discord or Reddit to help people communicate about new movies, TV shows, or books without accidentally revealing plot points and twists for people who aren't caught up.
This is a nice quality-of-life upgrade on the user side, but it also helps Meta by encouraging more conversations about pop culture without people worrying about spoiling others.
'Popular shows like 'The Last of Us' and 'The White Lotus' regularly trended on Threads during their seasons, a clear sign of the app's growing community of entertainment and pop culture enthusiasts,' Meta said in a press release.
Spoiler text can also be useful in other circumstances, like blurring out text or images that aren't violative, but still might be off-putting to some users. (Looking at my friend who shares #BruiseWatch updates after their Frisbee games.)
As a feature that's currently in testing, spoiler text/images have not rolled out to all users. For those who have it, text or images can be marked as spoilers by highlighting them before posting, then selecting 'mark spoiler' from the menu that appears.

Meta hires four more OpenAI researchers, The Information reports
(Reuters) -Meta Platforms is hiring four more OpenAI artificial intelligence researchers, The Information reported on Saturday. The researchers, Shengjia Zhao, Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi and Hongyu Ren have each agreed to join, the report said, citing a person familiar with their hiring. Earlier this week, the Instagram parent hired Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov and Xiaohua Zhai, who were all working in OpenAI's Zurich office, the Wall Street Journal reported. Meta and ChatGPT maker OpenAI did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The company has recently been pushing to hire more researchers from OpenAI to join chief executive Mark Zuckerberg's superintelligence efforts. Reuters could not immediately verify the report.

Their OpenAI Slack profiles have been deactivated. The Information first reported on the departures. It's the latest in a series of aggressive moves by Mark Zuckerberg, who is racing to catch up to OpenAI, Anthropic and Google in building artificial general intelligence. Earlier this month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that Meta has been making 'giant offers' to OpenAI staffers with '$100 million signing bonuses.' He added that, 'none of our best people have decided to take them up on that.' A source at OpenAI confirmed the offers. Hongyu Ren was OpenAI's post-training lead for the o3 and o4 mini models, along with the open source model that's set to be released this summer, sources say. Post-training is the process of refining a model after it has been trained on a primary dataset. Shengjia Zhao is highly skilled in deep learning research, according to another source. He joined OpenAI in the summer of 2022, and helped build the startup's GPT-4 model. Jiahui Yu did a stint at Google DeepMind before joining OpenAI in late 2023. Shuchao Bi was a manager of OpenAI's multimodal models. The departures from OpenAI come shortly after the company lost three researchers from its Zurich office, the Wall Street Journal reported. ‘Sirens' Star's Mystery Thriller ‘Drop' Gets Peacock Streaming Date
Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar in "Drop." Drop — a mystery thriller starring Netflix's Sirens star Meghann Fahy and 1923's Brandon Sklenar — is coming soon to streaming on Peacock. Directed by Christopher Landon, Drop was released in theaters on April 11 before debuting on digital streaming via premium video on demand on April 29. The summary for Drop reads, "Meghann Fahy (Devon in Sirens) plays Violet, a widowed mother on her first date in years, who arrives at an upscale restaurant where she is relieved that her date, Henry (Brandon Sklenar) is more charming and handsome than she expected. "But their chemistry begins to curdle as Violet begins being irritated and then terrorized by a series of anonymous drops to her phone.' According to Peacock, Drop will begin streaming on the NBC Universal platform on Friday, July 11. For those who haven't subscribed to the platform, Peacock offers an ad-based package for $7.99 per month or $79 per year and an ad-free package for $13.99 per month or $139.99 per year. Meghann Fahy Gets Top Billing On 'Drop' Following Meghann Fahy's success of Max's The White Lotus Season 2 — which earned her an Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 2023 — and a pivotal supporting role in Netflix's limited series The Perfect Couple, Fahy is billed as the lead actor in Drop. In an interview with Variety before Drop was released in theaters in April, Fahy told the trade publication that she was excited to be No. 1 on the call sheet for the film. 'It's been amazing. It's so interesting when you go film something, and then a year later, you get to see and share it with people,' Fahy told Variety. 'It's a really, really cool moment. I loved the process of making the film so much. It was a very new experience for me in a lot of ways. I learned a ton, and I met some amazing people.' Ultimately, Fahy knows there are several other talented people who come together to make movies happen.
