Blackburn CEO Waggott leaves after seven years
Waggott's exit from the club comes amid fan protests against his position and that of owners Venky's during this season. In March, a collection of Blackburn Rovers supporters groups called upon Waggott as well as head of football operations Rudy Gestede and chief operating officer, and representative of the owners, Suhail Pasha to not attend their final eight league matches. The groups believed the trio had become a target for frustrations at how the club was being run and argued that their absence could result in a more positive environment for the team to perform in.In response, the club welcomed the call for unity, but insisted the senior leadership team would continue to attend matches. After a dip in form under new boss Valerien Ismael during which they went almost two months without a win, Blackburn eventually rallied at the tail end of the season.Despite a run of four wins and two draws to close out the season, however, they narrowly missed out on a top six place on the final day.Meanwhile, Rovers confirmed on Tuesday its women's team would drop out of the second tier Women's Championship next season because owners Venky's are unwilling to meet the league's requirements on facilities, player welfare and staffing. It was a decision which defender Rachel Dugdale said had left the club's players feeling "devalued" by the "lack of communication" shown.

Tom Brady questions Wayne Rooney's ‘work ethic' during managerial stint at Birmingham
Brady, who is a minority owner of the club, stars in a new Amazon Prime documentary series, due to air on Friday, which outlines the trials and tribulations the new ownership group, Knighthead Capital Management LLC, faced when taking over. Back in 2023, Rooney was brought in as manager two months after the new owners bought the club, replacing John Eustace with the Blues sat sixth in the Championship. Rooney was sacked 83 days later as the club dropped to 20th and were eventually relegated. In the new television series, Brady is seen questioning Rooney before the decision to sack him, with the seven-time Super Bowl winner telling colleagues: "I'm a little worried about our head coach's work ethic." He added: "I mean, I don't know, I don't have great instincts on that." For his part, Rooney attempted to explain his thoughts on Birmingham's problems, telling Brady that the culture surrounding the club needs to change. He said: "Why they're playing in the Championship and not the Premier League is because we've all passed a ball, kicked the ball and run, but it's a focus, concentrated for 90 minutes." After his dismissal, Rooney did not feel 13 weeks was "sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed". Once Birmingham's relegation from the second division was confirmed, Brady later put the blame on the players despite the owners hiring seven different managers in just 10 months. "Well we've already changed the coach, so it's really the players because the coach doesn't go out there and put the ball in the goal," Brady said. "They were lazy, they were entitled and when you're lazy and entitled, you don't have much of a chance to succeed. We've got to change all the people that are associated with losing, so I think this summer there's going to be a lot of people gone." Birmingham spent £30m on transfers ahead of the 2024/25 season which is a monumental sum for a League One side. The club went on to break the Football League record for most points in a season and topped the table with 111 to secure their promotion back to the Championship for the upcoming season.

Ella Toone reveals her grandmother died on morning of Euro 2025 final
Ella Toone has revealed her grandmother died on the morning of England's Euro 2025 final victory over Spain. The 25-year-old played the opening 87 minutes of Sunday's match in Basel as the Lionesses retained their title thanks to a penalty shoot-out win following a 1-1 draw. Manchester United midfielder Toone lost her father Nick to prostate cancer last September. 'Even in the highest of highs life can hit you with the lowest of lows,' she posted on Instagram. 'My Nana Maz took her last breath on the morning of our Euro final. I have comfort in knowing she got to watch from the best seat in the house with Dad, her favourite person.' Toone, who helped England win Euro 2022 and finish runners-up to Spain at the 2023 World Cup, started five of her country's six games in Switzerland. 'I'll miss you forever nan but I'll cherish the special memories we made, there isn't enough words I can possibly say to sum up the person you were, but I'm grateful you were my nanna. My football loving, crazy, funny Nan,' her post continued. 'All those years ago when you put a bet on at the bookies that I would play for England one day & on the day you leave us we bring it home again. You always knew it.'

Full weather forecast as England and India clash in rain-disrupted final Test match at The Oval
The first day of the fifth Test match between England and India at The Oval was badly disrupted by heavy rain and thunderstorms. England led 2-1 coming into the final game, with India needing victory to draw the series. The tourists reached 72-2 from the opening 23 overs, played out under floodlights and gloomy skies, before the heavens opened to force an early lunch. And although play resumed at 3pm – with India captain Shubman Gill throwing away his wicket to a run-out 20 minutes later – rain again stopped play after half an hour. A blistering hot June and July is giving way to a wet start to August. Here is how the forecast looks over the coming days. Thursday 31 July 22C, heavy rain Thursday's rain did indeed fall as forecast, but clear skies are expected in the late afternoon and evening, raising the possibility of more play. Friday 1 August 21C, cloudy There is the possibility of showers, particularly around late morning and lunchtime, but the late afternoon is expected to be clearer with sunshine breaking through. Saturday 2 August 23C, sunny intervals Saturday is currently forecast to be the best weather of the Test match, with sunny spells throughout the day and little chance of rain, as it stands. Sunday 3 August 23C, thundery showers The forecast is not looking great on Sunday, however, with heavy rain and even thunderstorms expected through the morning and early afternoon. Monday 4 August 22C, light rain This match has every chance of going the distance, given the weather, but Monday's play could be curtailed with more rain forecast in the late afternoon, so organisers will need to take advantage of early sunny spells if this Test match is to produce a result.
