Alexandra Magistrate's court postpones case against Vusimuzi ‘Cat' Matlala and co-accused
This follows their brief appearance at the Alexandra Magistrate's Court, on July 11, on charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering. The charges are linked to a botched assassination attempt on Matlala's former partner, actress Tebogo Thobejane.
Magistrate Rennie Boshoff announced the postponement, after the defence raised concerns about incomplete disclosure of case documents.

The defence argued that the state had only partially disclosed the docket, while withholding critical documents, such as Matlala's bank statements. They accused the state of attempting to ambush them and requested full disclosure to prepare their case adequately. Boshoff said their request will be granted.
The defence's request for the crucial documents centres on allegations that Matlala transferred over R100 000 from his business account to the account of someone linked to Mabusela.
A significant portion of that money was later funnelled to Mabusela himself.

To disguise the payment, the accused allegedly fabricated a fraudulent funeral parlour invoice, which was meant to convince the police that the money Mabusela received was for his mother's funeral, when, it is alleged, it was intended to finance the hit on Thobejane.
The attempt on Thobejane's life took place on the N1 highway near Sandton in 2023. At the time, Thobejane, and her friend, were driving when they were ambushed and their car was shot multiple times. Her friend was wounded.

Kekana and Mabusela were released on a warning. Tsakane, who was, in May, added to the charge sheet as accused number four, was released on R20 000 bail in the same month.
Matlala will be remanded in custody.

Three arrested over ATM card scam in Mpumalanga
Police in Standerton, Mpumalanga, arrested three suspects aged between 33 and 47 on Friday, 18 July 2025, in connection with an ATM card scam. The arrests followed a chase on the R39 road between Morgenzon and Standerton. At around 12:30, a security company responded to a complaint about a card scam at an ATM at a local filling station. CCTV footage captured the suspects and their vehicle, prompting police to patrol the area. The suspects attempted to flee when spotted, but officers intercepted them swiftly. Police found several bank cards in possession of the suspects from Daveyton. Police confiscated the vehicle believed to have been used in the crime. The Standerton District Court will hear the case of the three men on Monday, 21 July 2025. Police are investigating whether the suspects are linked to other similar crimes. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, applauded both the police officers and the security company for their swift action and collaboration in apprehending the suspects. Sharp-eyed police officers recover stolen Fortuner before owner realises it's missing
A contractor visiting East Driefontein earlier this month had no idea his Toyota Fortuner had been stolen until police called to inform him they had already recovered it and arrested the suspects. Carletonville Herald reports the man had parked his SUV in the Masakhane Shaft parking area and gone inside, unaware that criminals had already made off with his vehicle. Fortunately, three vigilant members of the West Rand police's flying squad, based in Krugersdorp, were patrolling along the P111 road toward Westonaria when they spotted the Fortuner and found it suspicious, even though it hadn't yet been reported stolen. As officers tried to stop the vehicle, the suspects abandoned it and jumped into a second car. The police gave chase and managed to intercept and arrest all three men in the getaway car. Further investigation revealed that the second vehicle had also been reported stolen during a robbery in Florida earlier this year. Thanks to the sharp instincts and quick action of the flying squad, two stolen vehicles were recovered and three suspects are now behind bars.
