Sinner remains ice cool as Gauff, Pegula and Zverev join bonfire of seeds
American second seed Coco Gauff, chasing a French Open-Wimbledon double after her Paris triumph, was the day's most surprising casualty, losing 7-6(3) 6-1 to Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska as the sun set on a sultry day.
Gauff's compatriot Taylor Fritz, the world number five, survived a five-set firefight by the skin of his teeth against big-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
However, the same could not be said of 13 of the men's seeds who fell at the first hurdle, a Wimbledon record since 32 seeds were introduced in 2001.
Nine seeds also perished in the women's first round while the eight top-10 seeds to go out across the singles draws amounted to the highest at a Grand Slam in the professional era.
Germany's Alexander Zverev was the most notable men's casualty, the third seed losing 7-6(3) 6-7(8) 6-3 6-7(5) 6-4 to France's Arthur Rinderknech in a marathon duel that began on Monday and was locked at one set apiece overnight.
"I'm not sure he's ever played a match like that in his life," said Zverev, who is chasing a first Grand Slam title after 38 attempts.

Defending champion Krejcikova battles into Wimbledon third round
Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova moved into the third round with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over American world number 67 Caroline Dolehide on Thursday. The Czech 17th seed took one hour and 51 minutes to grind out another hard-fought victory to keep her title defence alive. Krejcikova had powered back from a set down to beat Philippines star Alexandra Eala in the first round on Tuesday. The two-time Grand Slam champion has endured a difficult time since defeating Italy's Jasmine Paolini in the final last year. The 29-year-old was out of action until May after suffering a back injury and lost in the second round of the recent French Open. Krejcikova pulled out of last week's Eastbourne Open before the quarter-finals with a thigh problem and has played just eight matches this year. But Krejcikova is relishing being back on the hallowed turf of the All England Club, describing walking onto Centre Court for her first-round match as a "very beautiful and just very joyful experience". Playing on the less glamourous Court Two in the second round, the Czech was broken in the fourth game of the first set, but responded emphatically. She won four consecutive games to regain control and served out the set. Krejcikova wobbled in the second set, dropping serve in the sixth game as Dolehide levelled the match. But the Czech steadied her nerve in the deciding set and landed the decisive break for a 4-2 lead before serving out the win.

SuperSport sold to Siwelele after 30 years in SA's elite league
SuperSport United have confirmed the sale of their status to Siwelele Football Club (Pty) Ltd. 'Following a closed bidding process, Siwelele was awarded the rights to purchase the three-time Premiership winners, pending approval by the PSL Executive Committee,' SuperSport said in a statement sent to media on Thursday. The sale follows intense speculation this week that SuperSport would be sold to businesspeople who have a desire to revive Bloemfontein Celtic, whose nickname was Siwelele before they were sold to Royal AM a few years ago. 'The sale of the club comes as SuperSport makes strategic shifts to allow it to remain the biggest broadcaster in Africa and a leading global competitor. Shifts in the market as well as the need to remain innovative in accordance with our core business have necessitated focused direction to allow SuperSport to remain the best sports content provider on the continent and a leader in broadcast innovation,' said SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha. Calvin le John, chairman of Siwelele FC, said: 'As Siwelele we are privileged to have been given the responsibility of continuing with a rich winning tradition in the PSL. SuperSport and MultiChoice group laid an incredible 30-year platform that we wish to build upon should we get the approval from the PSL executive committee.' Both parties said they'll not comment on the matter until the PSL ratifies the decision in the coming days. It is expected that Siwelele will be based in Free State where Bloemfontein Celtic used to operate before they were sold. If it is not clear if the pending sale of MultiChoice to a French broadcasting company Canal+ is part of the reason SuperSport is selling after 30 years.

Mayer set to stand against Ben Sulayem for FIA presidency
Mohammed Ben Sulayem will face a challenge to his bid for re-election as president of the FIA, motorsport's world governing body, after a rival candidate emerged on Thursday. The BBC reported American Tim Mayer, a former Formula One steward and son of former McLaren principal Teddy Mayer, will announce on Friday he is standing against the Emirati. A press conference was called at a venue outside the Silverstone circuit before British Grand Prix practice. Mayer, 59, told the BBC last November he had been fired via text message by an assistant to Ben Sulayem. Ben Sulayem, an Emirati, is scheduled to attend the race which marks the midpoint in the Formula One season. He has already announced he is seeking a second term. The FIA is the governing body for F1, the world rally championship and Formula E among other series.
