Trade Arabia03-03-2025
Saudi Arabia's Diriyah Company officials have met with executives from Alshaya Group and Starbucks to explore a potential retail partnership to create a unique experience in Diriyah featuring a flagship Starbucks store.
Diriyah Company's Group CEO Jerry Inzerillo met with Alshaya Group Executive Chairman Mohammed Alshaya; CEO John Hadden; and Starbucks Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol in this regard.
Spanning 14 sq km, Diriyah is a mixed-use development on the outskirts of Riyadh, being transformed into a world-class cultural and lifestyle destination. Anchored by the UNESCO World Heritage Site of At-Turaif, the birthplace of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the ancestral home of House Al Saud, Diriyah seamlessly blends 300 years of historic authenticity with modern design to create a unique visitor experience.
The Diriyah masterplan includes 566,000 sq m of lifestyle, retail and F&B offerings, bringing together more than 1,000 retail outlets and dining concepts. At the heart of this offering is Diriyah Square, a premier lifestyle and retail precinct with more than 186,000 sq m of leasable space featuring more than 400 iconic retail brands and dining outlets.
Another key attraction, Bujairi Terrace, adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of At-Turaif, has quickly become a premier dining and lifestyle hub. Since its opening in 2022, it has welcomed over 3 million visitors, offering a carefully curated selection of local, regional and international restaurants and boutique retail experiences.
Inzerillo said: 'We are excited about the potential of welcoming one of the world's most iconic brands to The City of Earth. This meeting marks an important step in our drive to partner with global brands, further positioning Diriyah as one of the world's greatest gathering places. We look forward to advancing our discussions with Starbucks and Alshaya Group to bring a unique retail experience to our visitors.'
Alshaya said: 'The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is an important country for Alshaya Group, and we welcome the opportunity to discuss bringing our most iconic brand to such a historically important site as Diriyah. With a flagship Starbucks store for the Middle East, our intention symbolizes our links to Saudi Arabia and support of the Kingdom's Vision 2030.'
Niccol said: 'Together with our long-standing partner, Alshaya Group, we are exploring opening a one-of-a-kind flagship Starbucks in Diriyah. We want to create a unique destination that blends the best of local culture with the great coffee and human connection we are known for around the world. It is impressive to see the work Diriyah Company is doing to build a world class destination.'

Apple Closes A Store In China For The First Time In Its History

In what is being seen as a first defensive move by Apple, the iPhone manufacturer has decided to close one of its retail shops in the country – marking it the first-ever closure since entering the market in 2008. China was the second-biggest retail market for Apple after the United States, but has faced tough competition from local brands in recent times. On Monday, Apple announced that it would close its store in Parkland Mall, located in the Zhongshan District of Dalian City, on August 9. Apple stated that the closure was due to changes in the shopping complex's landscape, a claim echoed by several locals. The mall has been experiencing a decline in footfall, which has led to the departure of several globally renowned brands. Retailers like Coach, Sandro and Hugo Boss haven't renewed their leases in recent years. In a statement to Bloomberg, Apple said: 'We're always focused on providing an exceptional experience for all of our customers both online and at more than 50 Apple Store locations across Greater China. Given the departure of several retailers at the Parkland Mall, we have made the decision to close our store there.' Apple has about 56 stores in the Greater China region, making up over 10 per cent of its footprint of more than 530 outlets globally. Dalian City has two Apple Stores, and they are less than 10 minutes apart. The other store at the Olympia 66 shopping complex remains open. Employees at the site that's closing will be given opportunities to work elsewhere, the company said. The two locations are roughly 10 minutes apart. Apple is opening a new store at Uniwalk Qianhai in Shenzhen in the middle of August, and Bloomberg reported it is planning additional locations in Beijing and Shanghai over the next year. On July 21, the company announced the opening of Apple Retail Service and App Store in Saudi Arabia, and said they have plans to open several stores on the country, including an iconic retail store in Diriyah, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The company is adding new stores in Detroit, the United Arab Emirates, and Bengaluru in India. A location in Osaka opened on July 26. The company also opened its first store in Malaysia last year.

Saudi Arabia Sets New Skill-Based Work Visa System: How Can You Benefit?

Saudi Arabia has rolled out a major change to its work visa system that could benefit skilled foreign jobseekers looking to work in the Kingdom. For the first time, all foreign workers will be officially classified into one of three skill levels: high-skilled, skilled, and basic. Previously, Saudi Arabia issued work permits based mainly on job titles without clearly linking them to qualifications, salary levels, or actual skill sets—often leading to mismatches between roles and worker profiles. The new move, which took effect for current workers on July 5, 2025, and will apply to new hires from August 3, 2025, is part of the Kingdom's ongoing Vision 2030 reforms. The aim? To attract highly qualified professionals, raise workforce standards, and help jobseekers better match with relevant roles. High-skilled: Reserved for professions like engineers, doctors, and IT specialists. Candidates will need to meet a points-based system that considers their education, professional experience, and salary. Skilled: Mid-level roles such as technicians, supervisors, and administrative staff. These require some experience and verified qualifications but don't need to meet the high-skilled points threshold. Basic: For manual labour and support roles. Workers in this category must be under the age of 60. If you're applying for a job in Saudi Arabia, the new system adds transparency and predictability to the process. You'll now know where you stand based on your credentials, and employers must ensure your classification matches your contract and qualifications. More importantly, for jobseekers with strong educational or technical backgrounds, the new structure creates a clearer path to higher-tier job opportunities. Professional accreditation programs like Qualification Verification or Skills Verification will now play a bigger role in employment eligibility. Employers are now required to: Ensure all current and new foreign hires are accurately classified. Update job titles and employee records in the Qiwa platform. Submit corrections if the initial classification is inaccurate. Incorrect classification could affect a company's ability to hire foreign workers in the future. To improve your classification: Gather documentation of your education and professional experience. Consider enrolling in Saudi-approved verification programs. Keep your job title and duties clearly aligned in your employment contract.
