Madras HC restrains DMK from using OTP verification as part of ‘Oraniyil TN'
A bench comprising justices SM Subramaniam and AD Maria Clete passed the interim order on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by S Rajkumar of Thiruppuvanam taluk in Sivaganga, seeking legal action against DMK and its functionaries for alleged unauthorised collection of Aadhaar and other personal details of individuals during the campaign.
The judges directed all authorities concerned to provide details on the data privacy policy employed in the above membership drive, whether informed consent is obtained from individuals during the drive, and the purpose of collecting individual data. The union ministry of information technology, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the DMK are also parties to the case. The case has been adjourned for two weeks for filing counter-affidavit and supporting documents.
The bench observed that freedom of political expression cannot be exercised freely if details on political affiliation are not held private. Information about a person's political beliefs can be used by the state to suppress dissent and to discriminate by denying employment and subjecting them to trolls, the judges said. Even digital membership drive by political parties is also a data privacy concern that has to be addressed, they added.

'Narcotics are being sold even near schools and colleges,' he alleged. About AMMK leader T.T.V. Dhinakaran's statement earlier in the day that NDA would come to power in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Nagenthran responded: 'The DMK has no place in this country. Mr. Dhinakaran may have expressed a personal view. If it differs from our stance, we will respond accordingly,' he said.

The AIADMK general secretary and the Leader of Opposition, Edappadi said on Wednesday that the delta districts would turn into a desert if Karnataka builds a a dam across the Cauvery at Mekedatu. Campaigning at Orathanadu, he pointed out that for the last four days there were reports that the Karnataka Chief Minister and his colleagues were firm on pursuing their proposal to construct a dam at Mekedatu. They went on record that the project would be implemented once the Centre approves the detailed project report filed by that State in this regard. On the other hand, there was not even a murmur over this issue from the DMK which rules Tamil Nadu, he added and questioned what the 39 MPs elected from Tamil Nadu and the DMK party, which is a constituent of the I.N.D.I. Alliance, was doing. 'Why not the DMK take up this issue with the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi to ensure that the Congress Government in Karnataka drops the proposal,' he questioned. With regard to the accusation by the DMK on the alliance forged by the AIADMK, he said it was the same DMK and its alliance parties that claimed that an alliance with the BJP would fail, earlier. Stating that the AIADMK-BJP alliance was always a formidable and victorious combination, he said it would win around 210 seats and the AIADMK would form the government with a majority. Later, he addressed meetings at Pattukottai and Peravurani as part of his Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom campaign.

JDU MP calls voter roll revision ‘Tughlaqi farman', says EC doesn't know history or geography of Bihar

New Delhi: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of the Election Commission (EC) is akin to a 'Tughlaqi farman (order)', Giridhari Yadav, a member of the Lok Sabha from the Janata Dal (United), an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has said. The Election Commission of India announced the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar last month, raising concerns in the Opposition over the removal of valid voters from the electoral rolls. The JDU MP termed the exercise as forcefully imposed, saying, 'If you wanted to do it, you should have given us six months; you could have given us more time. This is like a Tughlaqi farman of the Election Commission,' said JDU MP Yadav. As a party, the JDU has supported the SIR exercise. When questioned about that, JDU MP Yadav said he was only sharing his 'personal opinion'. 'It does not matter what the party is saying… It is my personal view. It is my independent view. We are with the party when we go to vote. It is the truth,' JDU MP Yadav said. 'If I can not tell the truth, why have I become an MP?' Opposition parties, especially the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress in Bihar, have criticised the EC move. Former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav has termed the SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar an 'eyewash' and questioned its timing. Earlier, before the apex court, several petitioners objected to the non-inclusion of documents, such as Aadhaar cards, in the list of documents voters can submit to the EC to prevent the removal of their names from the electoral rolls. Hearing the petitions earlier this month, the Supreme Court suggested that the EC consider Aadhaar, voter ID and ration cards as acceptable documents for the SIR.
