Man, 24, arrested after exhibition honouring Windrush generation vandalised
Officers were called to reports of vandalism at Windrush Square at 6.09am on Thursday, the Metropolitan Police said.
Portraits featuring in an exhibition were damaged.
A 24-year-old man was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of vandalism, the force said.
He was taken to a police station where he remains in custody.
Based on investigations carried out so far, the incident is not being treated as a hate crime, the Met said, adding that further enquiries will take place to establish the circumstances.
Superintendent Gabriel Cameron, who leads policing in Brixton, said: 'We understand that those in the community will feel distressed about vandalism to the Windrush exhibition in Brixton.
'We believe that this was not a hate crime, and I want to reassure anyone with concerns, that a man has now been arrested.
'Local neighbourhood officers have been in contact with the organiser of the exhibition, and remain in the area to respond to any questions or worries that people may have.'

EAST PROVIDENCE — A man with a Nazi flag was arrested on July 2 for stomping on a Cape Verdean flag during a ceremony at City Hall, according to the police. The incident was a "despicable act of hatred," East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva said in a statement. East Providence held a flag-raising ceremony on July 2 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cape Verde's independence from Portugal. According to the police, Joey Marsden, 27, of Lincoln showed up at City Hall on a moped while the celebration was taking place inside the building, and threw both the American flag and the Cape Verdean flag on the ground. Marsden then proceeded to stomp on the Cape Verdean flag, according to eyewitnesses and surveillance video. The police stopped Marsden on his moped a short distance from City Hall. During the arrest, they discovered that he had a 6-inch knife and a Nazi flag in his possession. He was charged with vandalism, disorderly conduct and possession of a prohibited weapon. "Our agency takes these acts of vandalism seriously and will pursue hate crime enhancements when warranted," said Michael Rapoza, acting chief of the East Providence Police Department. "I'd like to thank the ceremony attendees for alerting the police and our officers who responded quickly and apprehended the suspect. There is no place for this type of behavior in our city.' In a statement, the East Providence Police Department said that it is working with the state attorney general's office to determine whether Marsden will face additional hate crime enhancements. 'The City of East Providence takes great pride in being a diverse, inclusive and welcoming community for all,' DaSilva said in a statement. 'There is no room in this city for acts of hatred and vandalism. Our administration condemns all hateful acts and will continue to make it abundantly clear that East Providence is an inclusive community where hate is neither welcome nor tolerated.' Court records show that Marsden was arraigned July 3 and pleaded not guilty. He was released on $3,000 bail and will next appear in court on July 23. Family pay tribute to 'bright, strong-willed man'
The family of a 21-year-old who died in a lorry crash on the M11 has paid tribute to his "quiet strength and deep conviction". Luke Cusack, from Loughton in Essex, was driving close to Great Hallingbury near Stansted Airport when he died in a three-vehicle crash involving a HGV on 16 June. Another man was also seriously injured and the lorry driver, a 57-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. In a statement, his family said: "Luke was a bright, strong-willed young man, known for his determination and unique energy." They shared how Mr Cusack had a "rare gift for unexpected conversations - blending humour, insight, curiosity and knowledge. "He lived with quiet strength and deep conviction, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. "His smile was big and unforgettable, and his laugh - contagious and full of life." "Luke had dreams and plans. He was building a future on his own terms, chasing his goals with quiet focus and unwavering drive. "He approached life with intention, spoke with honesty, and made even small moments feel meaningful." His relatives added they wanted to give their "deepest gratitude" to the emergency services that attended the scene and witnesses. In the tribute, released through Essex Police, they asked for privacy as they dealt with their "unimaginable loss". "As a family, we are shattered. There are no words. Our lives will never be the same," they said. Police have urged anyone with information or dashcam footage relating to the crash to contact them. The opening of the inquest into Mr Cusack's death heard he was killed when a lorry "breached the central reservation" and struck his vehicle while he was travelling southbound. Man charged a year after four-year-old girl dies in Birmingham crash
A man has been charged with causing death by careless driving after a four-year-old girl died in a crash in Birmingham. Mayar Yahia died after being hit by a car in Upper Highgate Street on April 14 last year, West Midlands Police said. Three other people suffered injuries which were not serious. Javonnie Tavener, 23, has been charged with causing death by careless driving, causing death whilst driving uninsured and two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving, police said. Tavener appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on July 30, the force said. In a tribute released through West Midlands Police last year, Mayar's father Babiker said she was 'an extraordinary young girl'.
