Power employees to launch nationwide strike against privatisation on July 9
The strike will be preceded by district-level protests on July 2, the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCEEE) made an announcement in this regard after its Delhi visit on Monday.
According to a senior UP trade union leader and All-India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) chairman Shailendra Dubey, the committee warned that a symbolic nationwide strike would be held the moment UP floats a privatisation tender. It also urged the Centre to intervene and halt the process in public interest, citing the potential impact on farmers, households and the poor.
'NCCEEE leaders will also attend a mass convention in Lucknow on June 22, where a larger public movement against privatisation may be announced,' he said.
The committee praised the ongoing 194-day protest by UP power employees and condemned alleged repression by the state power corporation. It warned that continued suppression would force a stronger national response.
Meanwhile, the UP government has banned strikes in the power sector in the state for next six months under the Maintenance of Essential Services Act. The government issued an order in this regard on June 6.

UP needs schools, not liquor shops: Sanjay Singh
Meerut, Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh on Wednesday accused the Uttar Pradesh government of jeopardising the future of underprivileged children by shutting down thousands of government schools across the state. UP needs schools, not liquor shops: Sanjay Singh Singh, the party's UP in-charge, led a protest march here from the Government Primary School in Gotka to Gagol, accompanied by local villagers, parents, and schoolchildren. "The state government is closing 27,000 schools while opening 27,308 liquor shops. UP doesn't need 'madhushalas' , it needs 'pathshalas' ," Singh, a and Rajya Sabha MP, said during the march. He termed the government's move as a reflection of an "anti-education mindset" and accused the government of betraying the dreams of Dr B R Ambedkar and violating the Right to Education Act. "By shutting down temples of education and promoting liquor sales, the government is sending a dangerous message to the youth and society," he said. Singh alleged that around two lakh teaching positions were lying vacant in the state — 1.93 lakh in primary schools, 3,872 in secondary schools, and 8,714 in senior secondary institutions. "The government neither has the plan to fill these vacancies nor any concrete policy for maintaining schools," he said. He said the per student annual education expenditure in UP stands at ₹9,167, lower than the national average of ₹12,768. "This gap clearly indicates that education is not a priority for this government," he said. Singh announced that the Aam Aadmi Party would launch a state-wide 'School Bachao Andolan' and take its agitation from the streets to the legislature. "If the government fails to reopen the closed schools and initiate recruitment of teachers, we will be compelled to launch a full-fledged statewide agitation," he warned. The UP government has decided to "pair" schools with low enrolment to pool resources, improve infrastructure, and align with the goals of the National Education Policy 2020. The policy, recently upheld by the Allahabad High Court, has set in motion the pairing of over 10,000 of the 1.3 lakh government-run primary schools across the state, officials estimate. The essence of the pairing exercise lies in merging schools with fewer than 50 students into nearby institutions to create a more robust This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Bihar Police to form ‘shooter cell' amid rising crime
Patna: In the wake of the rising incidents of murder and crime across Bihar, the Police Headquarters has decided to form a dedicated 'shooter cell' to monitor and take timely action against shooters and professional criminals in the state. Bihar ADG (Law and Order) Kundan Krishnan informed that SPs and SSPs of all districts have been instructed to prepare detailed data of notorious shooters in their jurisdictions. 'The cell will monitor old criminals and identify new shooters promptly to prevent contract killings and gang-related violence. This step comes amid concerns over rising murder cases in Patna and other districts in recent weeks,' Krishnan said. ADG Krishnan noted that the desire for quick money and a glamorous lifestyle is pushing many youths toward crime. Patna alone has around 5 lakh youth, with a large number reportedly at risk of straying from the mainstream into criminal activities. Responding to queries on the recent murder of businessman Gopal Khemka, ADG Krishnan stated that the headquarters fully supports Patna Police's investigation and theory in the case. He emphasised that adequate evidence is available, which will be presented in court to ensure justice. As crime incidents rise, encounters between police and criminals have taken place under 'Operation Langda' in multiple districts, including Patna, with police shooting criminals in the leg. Several BJP leaders have demanded adopting the 'Yogi model' (UP-style police action) to control crime, urging tougher police action, including encounters. However, ADG Krishnan stated clearly, 'Encounter is not the cure for this disease. Society must come forward, and both police and administration need public cooperation. Nothing can happen without it.' Nitish Cabinet Minister Neeraj Bablu earlier said, 'One encounter will not suffice; dozens of encounters may be needed. Criminals' bullets are heard, why can't police bullets be heard? Police should create fear in the minds of criminals.' Bihar's Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha repeatedly stated that the government will not only conduct encounters but also confiscate criminals' illegal properties and use bulldozer action against them. While the Bihar Police plans to counter rising crime with intelligence-driven measures like the 'shooter cell', the political discourse around encounters and strong-arm policing continues to intensify ahead of the upcoming elections.
