‘It's been an absolute blast': Northern Ireland's record goal scorer announces retirement

The 36-year-old bows out as Northern Ireland's all-time leading goal scorer, netting 38 goals in 95 appearances for her country since her debut in March 2005, the most for either the men's or women's team.
Furness capped off her international career with a starring role by helping Northern Ireland not only qualify for their first major tournament at Euro 2022 but play all three games at the tournament.
At club level, the midfielder is best known for her two spells with Newcastle United, with whom she ended her club career this season, as well as also featuring for Sunderland, Reading, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Bristol City and Icelandic side Grindavík.
"I've had 20 fantastic years. Coming in as a 16-year-old to now, it's been an absolute blast. The progress I've seen, especially over the past couple of years, has been fantastic,' commented Furness.
"Whether I've been in it or out of it, I've been the biggest fan. Everyone has stories and this is part of my chapter. I'm going on to a new chapter now which I'm really excited for.
"I've been in football a long time and I'd like to think over the years I've made a difference, especially with Northern Ireland. That's all I ever wanted; I wanted to make a difference and help pave the way for all you coming through."
Furness scored her first goal for her country in October 2005 against Romania and would go on to represent Northern Ireland for 18 years, playing her final game in a Nations League clash with Hungary in October 2023.
Her crowning moment came when she became the country's leading goal scorer in November 2021, scoring twice against North Macedonia to break the record.
Some of her most important goals came in the qualification process for Euro 2022, though, grabbing five in the group stages before scoring in the Play-Off first-leg against Ukraine, and she would then provide the assist for Julie Nelson's famous header against Norway in the group stages of the main tournament.
Although she didn't feature, she was recalled by Tanya Oxtoby for the recent international window with Poland and Bosnia-Herzegovina, ending her career on the international stage.
On the club scene, the Sunderland-born star made exactly 100 appearances in the Super League, scoring 13 goals, but success followed her around throughout her career.
Furness would win the Premier League Nations Division title with Sunderland in 2011 before helping Liverpool earn promotion to the Super League in 2023 and then do the same with Bristol City a year later, before bringing down the curtain on her playing days at Newcastle United last season.
'Rachel has been the ultimate professional the entire time I have known her, whether she's been in the squad or not. The respect she's shown, and her ability to always put the team first, speaks volumes about her character,' said Northern Ireland manager Tanya Oxtoby.
'She came into the last two camps and gave the squad a real lift to ensure we got the job done — that really speaks to the person she is. I'm so glad we could send her off in style. She has done so much for this country.'

Lionesses set for eye-watering payday with stars to scoop millions if they win Euros Final

EXCLUSIVE: The players are set to bank millions in FA bonus payments, sponsorship bonuses, endorsement deals and social media pay if they win the Euros for the second time in three years The Lionesses will net more than just a trophy if they beat Spain on Sunday night - they will hit a stonking £15million jackpot, too. The players are set to bank millions in FA bonus payments, sponsorship bonuses, endorsement deals and social media pay if they win the Euros for the second time in three years. ‌ The squad will share a £1.7m bonus from the FA, with each player in line to receive £73,000 – £18,000 more than they got after beating Germany at Wembley in 2022. The Lionesses are also set to bank an estimated £1m from sponsor bonuses, plus a further £2m from social media platforms TikTok and Instagram, according to experts. ‌ Fresh endorsement deals could be worth £10m to the star players, doubling their earnings to more than £1m a year each. Sponsorship expert Nigel Currie said: 'The Lionesses could certainly cash in by retaining the Euros. ‌ 'It would be a unique achievement and the potential offers would far exceed those on the table currently. Many of the high-profile players can expect to earn million-pound endorsement contracts on the back of further success.' Beth Mead, England's Euro 2022 top scorer, has already amassed a £1.5m fortune from her stellar career. The 30-year-old set up Mead 7 Limited the month after the Lionesses' Euro 2022 win, and posted assets of £1.3m the following year, including £623,165 in cash, after paying £193,151 in tax. She has contracts with Nike, Elle UK and McDonald's, and reportedly earns £200,000 a year at Arsenal. With nearly 900,000 followers on TikTok and Instagram, she can command nearly £3,000 per sponsored post. Like Mead, Lucy Bronze enjoys lucrative sponsorship deals and a chunky pay packet with WSL champions 33-year-old full-back, who has amassed 139 England caps, has £702,920 in her firm LRTB Limited. Club team-mate Lauren James, 23, tipped as a future England poster girl, has £594,989 in her firm, L James Ventures Limited. Based on the firm's tax bills, she earns around £600,000 a year from Chelsea, plus sponsorship contracts with Nike, Sure deodorant, Barclays, Optimum Nutrition and Google Pixel phones. Lauren Hemp, 24, the four-time PFA Women's Young Player of the Year winner, has £371,909 in her firm, LM Hemp Ltd. She banked £270,000 last year and has a deal with Nike. Midfielder Georgia Stanway, 26, earned £350,000 in 2024. The Bayern Munich star has £312,700 in her company after paying bills. ‌ Meanwhile, Alex Greenwood, 31, has £283,557 in her 'sports activities' firm 27 AG Limited and Chloe Kelly, 27, has a £2m deal with Land Rover, plus others with Calvin Klein and Nike, with £183,235 in her firm. Lioness captain Leah Williamson, 28, is believed to be among the squad's highest earners, with a reported salary of £200,000 and deals with Gucci, Pepsi and Nike. ‌ Alessia Russo, 26, and Keira Walsh, 28, both have five-figure sums. Lioness super-sub Michelle Agyemang, 19, has yet to file accounts for her new firm Fortr3ss Ltd. The fearless teenager is set to be offered a string of deals following her heroic goals during the tournament. Ella Toone, who is worth £220,564, has admitted she'll 'never get used' to being the face of huge brands. ‌ The 25-year-old midfielder is the face of body spray Impulse, and has featured in Charlotte Tilbury make-up adverts. Ella said: 'It's been a little bit embarrassing that every time we've been watching a game, my head comes on the screen in the adverts. It's something that you've just got to embrace. 'But I think for us as players, it's about what we do on the football pitch, and that will always be at the front of our minds.' Ella, from Tyldesley, near Wigan, predicted new star Michelle will receive a lot of attention. She said: 'She might get papped eating a pasty like I did. I'll have to warn her about that.' UEFA has increased the total prize pot by 156% to £35.8m since Euro 2022. Although the women's game is growing, there is still a big gap compared to the £289m pot for the men's Euro 2024 tournament. Inside England captain Leah Williamson's sweet summer holiday with Miss USA 'girlfriend'

Leah Williamson - captain of the England team and player for Arsenal - jetted off for a sweet summer holiday with rumoured girlfriend Elle Smith The Lionesses are primed to take on Spain in the UEFA Women's Euro Final 2025 - with captain Leah Williamson, 28, charged with leading her team to try and defeat the world champs. ‌ The final will take place in Basel, Switzerland, and will see the Lionesses defend their massive Euro 2022 win. ‌ With the last two games the England team played in this tournament featuring some dramatic, last-minute wins, the stakes couldn't be higher for UK football fans - and the final is likely to keep pulses racing. ‌ England boss Sarina Wiegman's huge personal sacrifice for family in UK Lioness super-sub Michelle Agyemang gears up for England games by playing piano Before taking on the major challenge of the tournament, captain Leah Williamson made sure to take some much-needed rest and relaxation with a holiday in Spain - ensuring she was fully charged up and ready to go for the professional feat. Leah went on the trip with former Miss USA Elle Smith, 27, who has long been rumoured to be the England captain's girlfriend. ‌ The model joined Leah - who posted a series of gorgeous snaps of her holiday on Instagram - for the break in the stunning Spanish island of Majorca. While they were there, the pair and pals enjoyed the sunshine, went for dinners, lounged on yachts, listened to a piano player by candlelight, and gave paddle boarding a go. ‌ Leah also included a video of herself undertaking some drills while she was away, clearly keen to keep up with her fitness regime ahead of the major tournament. They looked to have had a great time during their trip, as Elle commented on the post, "same time next year? x" and Leah quickly replied, "yes please." Elle, who previously worked as a journalist for WHAS-TV in Kentucky, is signed to the iconic agency Wilhelmina Models, and after winning the beauty pageant Miss Kentucky in 2021, she went on to win the overall Miss USA competition the same year - and came in the top 10 for Miss Universe shortly after. ‌ Earlier this year, Elle posted a sweet birthday tribute to Leah on her own Instagram page, of the pair chilling out on a sea float in the sunshine, and captioning it "Happy birthday my love x". Leah replied to the post with a series of emojis, including one of a blushing face hiding its smile - and a series of white hearts. Elle's page was quickly flooded with support, with several people noting that the birthday post seemed like something of a relationship "hard launch". When Leah, playing for Arsenal, won the Women's Champions League back in May, Elle quickly posted her support of the football player, sharing a series of snaps. In one, Leah sat on Elle's lap and showed off her medal, and in another, Elle held the trophy while Leah bit her medal, and the pair both beamed.

Eddie Howe breaks silence on Alexander Isak's future after Liverpool target told hierarchy he wants to leave the club this summer

Eddie Howe has revealed that Newcastle have a 'decision to make' on the future of want-away Alexander Isak - but says it must be for the best of the club. Mail Sport revealed on Thursday that the striker has told the hierarchy he wants to leave this summer, with Liverpool preparing a British record offer. Isak is not here with the squad in Singapore - he reported a thigh injury on Monday - and after Howe's comments at the team hotel on Saturday afternoon, it would appear far from certain that he will still be at the club beyond this transfer window. When asked if he wanted a quick resolution, the Newcastle boss said: 'I wouldn't put a timescale on it. I think with these situations it has to be right for the football club, and everything then is taken into context below that. 'But the club will make the right decision with all the information that it has, and ultimately to try and move the club forward in whatever way that is. Then it's up to us to make good decisions the other way and try and improve the squad as best we can. That's what we're trying to do, regardless of Alex's situation. 'But I think there's a wider picture here. There's a whole football club that has to make the decision. The ownership, together with the board of directors, especially with the money involved in modern day transfers. The manager of course has an opinion, but ultimately the decision will rest with the board.' Howe added: 'Of course there's things going on behind the scenes (with Alex). He will be aware he's in the news every day, and I'm sure that's not easy for anyone in that situation. Conversations that happen between Alex and the club or Alex and myself will stay private for obvious reasons. We do share a really good relationship with him. 'He's been magnificent for us and he's very popular in the dressing room. We'd love him to continue his journey at Newcastle. I certainly hope he stays. And I said (last weekend) I was confident that he'd stay. I don't see anything that's going to change that opinion of mine at the moment, but it's football and who knows what the future may bring. 'All I would say on the broader picture is whatever happens has to be right for Newcastle. We're in a very strong position financially. We're determined to be successful. We are ambitious. We've got a great season ahead of us. We need to add to the squad and continue to improve, and the journey can continue in an upward trajectory.' Howe also revealed that no contract talks are taking place with Isak. 'As far as I'm aware, I don't think there are any contract talks taking place at the moment,' he said. 'That'll be for a later date potentially. I think for now, with the situation as it is and the state of the window, in the sense that it's hurtling towards the end of the window very quickly, from our perspective, there's still so much that could happen.' Of Isak's injury situation, Howe said: 'I've got no major update on that. He first mentioned his thigh just before the Celtic game. We assumed it would be a very minimal injury, nothing too serious. And then on the Monday after the Celtic game, he went in from training very early and didn't feel right. 'So he's now in Newcastle getting that injury assessed and hopefully he'll be back soon and playing in the black-and-white shirt. That's what we all want to see.'
