Women's sports coverage goes mainstream

Axios15-04-2025
Following a breakout year in 2024, roughly a dozen publishers have introduced new, specialized coverage plans for women's sports.
Why it matters: Once a niche topic, outlets now see women's sports as a driver of readership, revenue and growth.
Driving the news: USA Today is launching a new content vertical on women's sports called USA Today Studio IX that will feature news, multimedia content and events.
The studio will include coverage about professional leagues like the WNBA, WTA and LPGA, along with college and high school sports and the Olympics. USA Today's network of 200 local publications will contribute to the coverage.
The hub will feature news stories, videos and photo galleries. Team members include USA Today columnist Nancy Armour and staff writer Meghan Hall.
Zoom out: As viewership and attendance for women's sporting events has skyrocketed, so too has the marketing and commerce opportunities for brands.
Ad spending on women's sports more than doubled last year, according to marketing analytics firm EDO.
Ads aired during women's sports programs were 40% more impactful than the average primetime ad.
The big picture: For media companies facing an increasingly competitive economic environment, women's sports have become an opportunity to expand their businesses. Below are some of the new investments:
Television:
Sports Illustrated announced last week it will host the SI Women's Games, a biennial event with athletes competing across six sports that will broadcast domestically in prime time with Scripps Sports and ION.
CNBC debuted a new women's sports event on the sidelines of the Women's NCAA Championship this month sponsored by JPMorganChase. It's partnering with Deep Blue Sports + Entertainment to livestream Deep Blue's annual Business of Women's Sports Summit this year.
Roku Channel is launching Women's Sports Now, a weekly studio show on women's sports, hosted by WNBA star Renee Montgomery and comedian Sarah Tiana.
All Women's Sports Network was launched by Whoopi Goldberg and streaming media company JungoTV last year and is available in the U.S. on Vizio WatchFree+.
Online:
Bleacher Report created B/R W, a social brand focused on women's sports, on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok earlier this year.
The Athletic and Yahoo Sports teamed up to launch a hub for women's sports coverage on Yahoo Sports' website and app, last fall.
The Information hired its first sports reporter last winter to cover the business and focus on women's sports.
Front Office Sports also brought on its first reporter to cover women's sports exclusively.
The Associated Press last month said it is doubling down on women's coverage, adding a new dedicated reporter to cover the N.Y. Liberty and dedicating robust coverage to the new 3-on-3 Unrivaled basketball league.
Betches Media introduced a sports vertical, Betches Sports, to cover sports news and culture, including women's sports, for its audience.
Audio:
iHeartMedia and Deep Blue Sports + Entertainment created the Women's Sports Audio Network, the first audio platform dedicated to women's sports.
Multiple publishers have debuted new women's sports podcasts, including The Athletic, The Ringer, Vox Media and Just Women's Sports, joining publishers like CBS Sports, The Guardian and others with existing women's focused shows.
Between the lines: In addition to mainstream coverage, there's also been a rise of new women's sports-specific media business, such as The Gist and Just Women's Sports, which launched in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
Earlier this month, former Vice CEO Nancy Dubuc was named executive chair of Togethxr, a women's sports media and commerce startup founded by top female athletes such as Alex Morgan and Sue Bird.
What to watch: More ad agencies are investing in women's sports programs to drive ad dollars to new coverage efforts.

Sabrina Ionescu carries Liberty to win over Mercury

NEW YORK — We finally got the Liberty and Mercury going at each other pretty close to full strength. And at the start, it looked like it was going to be a great one. Both teams had all of their starpower and key contributors — except for New York's Nyara Sabally — as a see-saw battle went into the fourth quarter undecided. But Sabrina Ionescu and the Liberty shined the brightest in an 89-76 win. Phoenix's Alyssa Thomas and Kahleah Copper had their way early at Barclays Center, with Copper converting on contested shot attempts and Thomas playing bully ball. Ionescu couldn't trade buckets with them, scoring just three points in the first quarter as the Mercury star duo totaled 17. But Ionescu regrouped and scored 26 in the final three quarters to send the Mercury home with a loss. She finished with one of her best stat lines of the season: 29 points, eight assists, five rebounds, one block and one steal. It was her night. She signaled that with just over seven minutes in the fourth after converting an and-1 layup on Monique Akoa Makani. And on the next possession, she put her team up 15 with another layup after weaving through Phoenix's defense. After a Mercury bucket, Leonie Fiebich essentially scored the dagger — a 24-footer that put the Liberty up 16 at the 5:43 mark. The ending looked completely different from the start when the Libs were held scoreless for over three minutes to start the matchup. Jonquel Jones dragged her team back, though, with nine points in the period to keep the deficit within four. Before Ionescu exploded, it was Jones looking like the No. 1 option. She was on double-double watch before halftime and eventually finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Thomas finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and two steals. Copper contributed 14 points and three rebounds. The teams traded blows, and the Liberty eventually trailed by 12 in the period. Coach Sandy Brondello's team responded with a 17-7 run in the final minutes, headlined by nine Ionescu points. Just like that, the game was tied at 46 going into halftime. It was a game the Liberty should've been losing big. By halftime, the Liberty were shooting 34.2% to Phoenix's 48.6%. The Liberty's third quarter began sloppily and slowly. The Mercury — again led by Copper — got off to an 8-3 start. But that's where having the luxury of two MVPs and three All-Star players comes in handy. A fourth All-Star — Emma Meesseman — is awaiting a visa and will be in New York shortly. A quick three-minute, 11-3 run flipped the game once again. Breanna Stewart's layup at the 2:19 mark put her team up three and forced Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts to call timeout. Ionescu's barrage continued with a 25-foot trey after Kennedy Burke's block on Satou Sabally. Then Jones — in the corner in front of the Mercury bench — banked in a buzzer-beater that was upheld after an official review to end the third. It put the Libs up eight entering the fourth. The Sabrina Show continued from there — this time with four assists as the Mercury's comeback attempt fell short. The road team trailed by as many as 18 points before cutting it to 10. Finally, the Liberty could exhale after dropping the first two games of the season against the Mercury. Not enough time was left and the Liberty put them in too deep of a hole Friday night. And there was mainly one player to blame for that — No. 20, Sabrina Ionescu.

Jim Cramer On TKO Group: 'I'm Not a Player'

TKO Group Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:TKO) is one of the stocks that Jim Cramer looked at. When a caller asked about the company during the episode, Cramer said: 'Okay, that stock is a momentum stock, and I am saying that momentum's got two more days of downside, and it worries me. I'm not going to jump on the TKO bandwagon if we have two more days of momentum pain, I'm talking about [the house of pain], and I'm not a player.' Photo by dylan nolte on Unsplash TKO Group (NYSE:TKO) is the parent company of UFC and WWE and operates in sports and entertainment by managing intellectual property, producing and distributing live events and content. The company provides a streaming platform and monetizes through merchandising, sponsorships, and advertising. Cooper Investors Global Equities Fund stated the following regarding TKO Group Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:TKO) in its second quarter 2025 investor letter: 'TKO Group Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:TKO) is the owner and operator of the two leading combat sports content assets – the UFC and WWE. We wrote about TKO in our September Quarterly Report (Insights, Fund Performance & Financial Updates | Cooper Investors – Cooper Investors). Since making our initial investment, the company has also acquired Premier Bull Riding (PBR), sports marketing agency IMG and premium (sports) experience provider On Location (in a single transaction). The core UFC and WWE assets still account for the vast majority of TKO's economics. Wings' Paige Bueckers finds a new way to impress amid upset win over Storm

For most rookies, assuming a leadership role is not a natural thing. But Paige Bueckers is not most rookies. After a historic college career at UConn, Bueckers joined the Dallas Wings, where it was hoped the former NCAA champion would form a dangerous backcourt partnership with All-Star guard Arike Ogunbowale. But while Ogunbowale has struggled for consistency, Bueckers has emerged as an All-Star herself. A virtual shoo-in for Rookie of the Year honors, Bueckers leads all rookies in points (18.2) and assists (5.5) per game. On Tuesday night, she might have accomplished her most impressive feat yet in a Dallas uniform: leading the Wings to a blowout win in Seattle, proving her mettle in one of The W's toughest arenas. MORE: Paige Bueckers ties Caitlin Clark with record-breaking rookie milestone Bueckers scored 14 points and added six assists as the Wings blew out the Storm, 87-63, in a game that saw Ogunbowale go off for a team-high 20 points -- her best scoring output in nearly a month. Now recovered from a thumb injury, Ogunbowale thanked her teammates for standing by her in what has been a difficult season personally; she is averaging a career-low 15.9 points per game. Ogunbowale though had special praise for Bueckers, calling her a "true leader" who "always has everybody's best interest at heart." For Bueckers, that quality just comes naturally. "The way that I play basketball is the way I try to live my life," Bueckers said following the win in Seattle. At just 23 years old, Bueckers' workload is already among the most demanding in the league, and the Wings' 7-17 record might be a bit alien to a player who is used to winning nearly every game. But Dallas' win in Seattle -- its first road victory over a team other than the Connecticut Sun -- is a firm step in the right direction for a young, growing team.
