Lonzo Ball excited for fresh start with Cavaliers after trade from Bulls
Instead, the veteran guard will use the offseason getting acclimated to a new team.
Ball was at the Cleveland Cavaliers' practice complex meeting with the medical staff and coaches on Monday after his trade from the Chicago Bulls for forward Isaac Okoro was finalized on Sunday.
Chicago and Cleveland agreed to the trade on June 28, but it didn't become official until the start of the new league year on Sunday.
'I think it's a great situation for my play style,' Ball said. 'Don (Donovan Mitchell) is one of the best players we have in the league. And they have two bigs that are mobile, can set pick-and-rolls and get to the rim like that. And then do some switching on defense. I think we can do a lot of different things on both sides of the ball, and to have the option to be able to do those things is great.'
Ball averaged 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 35 games this past season after missing the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns because of a left knee injury. The 27-year old Ball underwent a meniscus and cartilage transplant in his left knee in March 2023 after two surgeries failed to fix an injury he suffered during his first season in Chicago in 2021-22.
He missed the last two months of the season due to a sprained right wrist, but was encouraged with the way his knee held up throughout the season.
'After the games I didn't really know what to expect. But, you know, when I first got back versus Minnesota in that preseason game, I was kind of surprised that I was moving around,' Ball said. 'I feel like I just got better as the year went on. Unfortunately, I had to deal with my wrist, but as far as my knee was concerned, it was pretty good.'
Ball, the second overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2017 draft, has one year remaining on his contract with a team option for the 2026-27 season.
Cleveland had a need at point guard after Ty Jerome signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. Starter Darius Garland is likely to miss the start of the regular season after undergoing surgery on his left big toe last month.
The Cavaliers had the second-best record in the NBA at 64-18 but were eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals by the Indiana Pacers in five games.
Ball has yet to take part in a playoff game in the six seasons he has played, which is something he is hoping will change.
'When you start in September or October you can't look too far ahead. But they were No. 1 in the East last year, so everybody knows that. It's pretty much ring or nothing,' he said. 'It's just making sure I'm prepared to be as available as possible and put myself in the best position to finish the season strong. Right now, it's more so just being in the weight room making sure my lower body is good and stuff like that.'

Grand Canyon University's move to the Mountain West has been accelerated. Lopes to compete this fall
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Grand Canyon University announced Tuesday its move to the Mountain West Conference will begin immediately. The school in Phoenix was initially scheduled to transition from the Western Athletic Conference to its new league on July 1, 2026. The Mountain West offered an earlier transition, however, allowing the school to compete for conference championships this fall. Advertisement "The addition of Grand Canyon for the 2025-26 academic year is a significant win for the student-athletes at GCU and in the Mountain West,' conference commissioner Gloria Nevarez said in a statement. Grand Canyon will be one of 14 schools competing in the conference next season. The accelerated transition comes after five Mountain West schools announced they intend to depart the conference and join the Pac-12 in 2026. Those schools are Utah State, Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Colorado State. 'Grand Canyon brings elite recruiting, a passionate fanbase, and state-of-the-art facilities, elevating the Mountain West's competitiveness and national profile," Nevarez said. Mike Brown is excited about the potential and the pressure of being Knicks coach
Associated Press GREENBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Mike Brown knows there's going to be pressure that comes with coaching the Knicks. He also knows there's a great roster and great restaurants waiting in New York. He's excited about all of it. The new Knicks coach shook off any concerns about taking over a team that fired Tom Thibodeau despite getting two wins from the NBA Finals, pointing to the positives Tuesday that made him want the job. 'Nobody has any bigger expectations, first of all, than I do. I mean, my expectations are high,' Brown said. 'But this is the Knicks. I talked about Madison Square Garden being iconic. You talk about our fans. I love and embrace the expectations that come along with it, so I'm looking forward to it.' Brown was hired a little more than a month after the Knicks surprisingly fired Thibodeau despite getting to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years. Brown didn't want to talk too much about that decision, nor the Sacramento Kings' choice to fire him last season. 'First of all, Tom's a tremendous coach and he is a friend of mine, but I don't want to get to the past,' Brown said. 'I'm just excited about the roster. I'm excited about the things that we're going to put in place here and where we could go with the guys that we have.' The Knicks went 51-31 last season and have one of the strongest starting fives in the league, headlined by All-NBA selections Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns. They would have gone into next season as one of the favorites in the East if they brought back their same team. Instead, team president Leon Rose and owner James Dolan decided they needed to change coaches as they continue searching for their first championship since 1973. Brown is 454-304 in 11 seasons, winning NBA Coach of the Year honors in 2009 with Cleveland and 2023 in Sacramento, when he led the Kings to the playoffs for the first time since 2006. The Knicks equally valued his success as an assistant coach, winning an NBA title in 2003 under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio and three more championships under Steve Kerr in Golden State. He also led the Nigerian team to an upset victory over the U.S. in a pre-Olympic exhibition game in 2021. 'When I was in San Antonio with David (Robinson) and Tim (Duncan), it was about playing inside-out, and now fast-forward to my time with Steve it's about pace and space and that's where the game is,' Brown said. 'If you can't evolve you're going to get left behind, and so I feel like I'm trying to do that and hopefully we'll be able to bring some of that here.' Brown believes he takes over a team that can play fast like he prefers, but also has the versatility to play other styles thanks to Brunson. He added that the Knicks' success in the postseason shows their potential. The road to go even further next season is open for the Knicks, with Indiana and Boston likely to be weakened after stars Tyrese Haliburton and Jayson Tatum sustained Achilles tendon injuries in the postseason. But Brown said there is plenty of work to do. 'They're a lot of good teams out there. Doesn't matter if those guys are injured or not,' Brown said.
