RGU prof nominated as official of Indian Universities Athletics team
The Games is scheduled to be held in Germany from July 16 to 27 and over 8,500 student-athletes and officials from over 100 countries will compete for medals in 18 sports, making it one of the largest multi-sports events in the world.
The 2025 FISU World University Games Summer will be hosted across the German cities of Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Hagen and Berlin.
As part of the Indian delegation, Prof Prasad will play a vital role in the coordination and management of the Indian contingent, ensuring smooth operations and athlete support throughout the event.
Prof Prasad's nomination marks a significant achievement not only for RGU but also for the entire northeastern region.
"It is a great honour to represent RGU and to contribute to the growth of university sports on the International platform," Prof Prasad said. "This opportunity is not just a personal milestone, but also a proud moment for RGU, as we continue to inspire excellence in both education and sport," he added.

Over 300 Indian student-athletes from 61 universities, selected through rigorous nationwide trails involving more than 400 institutions, will compete in 18 sporting disciplines, including athletics, archery, swimming, basketball, table tennis, tennis, gymnastics, judo, volleyball and others including paralympic events like 3x3 wheelchair basketball.
The Indian contingent's preparation and participation are being supported by the Union ministry of youth affairs and sports, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), and the Odisha govt.

Understudy Jurel steps into Pant's shoes
Kolkata: There is nothing much one can do but wait for an opportunity when Rishabh Pant is keeping wicket for India. Dhruv Jurel has been doing that diligently for two years now, getting a break at Rajkot, before getting two more Tests — all three against England — at Ranchi and Dharamsala last year. He was played alongside Pant in the Perth Test, but that was blink-and-miss in terms of performance. Till Pant injured his finger at Lord's, and Jurel was back behind the stumps. But there have been plenty of talking points. At Lord's Jurel was moving with the moving ball, even covering for the seaming ball by throwing himself on either side. But more encouraging was his keeping to the spinners. Two stumpings stand out here, both in the Old Trafford Test where Pant was again injured, suffering a foot fracture after being struck by the ball. Outsmarting Joe Root is no mean feat, but here Jurel was in sync with Ravindra Jadeja's guile, completing a sharp take after the England batter was drawn into a forward defence, only for the ball to pitch well short and spin away, drawing him further. For Jurel to not lose the ball despite Root's stance blocking it, collecting it and whipping off the bails in one swift action was brilliant. Replicating that dismissal against Harry Brook, this time off the right-handed Washington Sundar, seemed easier but to be alive to a stumping chance even after 70 overs had been bowled calls for excellent focus. Jurel has exhibited that consistently. Which is why Jurel coming in as Pant's replacement was a no-brainer, possibly the least discussed decision the Indian team management has had to take for the Oval Test. India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak hinted that on Tuesday. 'Particularly about Dhruv, he's a very talented player. He has already played and performed for India. So, they all keep preparing that at any stage, any injuries, any requirement, they should be ready to play. And I think he's in the same mindset,' said Kotak. 'One plus thing is because Rishabh got hit on the finger at Lord's, he kept well, because the ball was up and down. Then the next game, again because Rishabh got hit on the foot, he kept. So, the keeping side, he has already done it long enough. The batting, I think he's prepared, he's ready, and he's very, very talented. So, he'll try and do his best, there's no doubt.' It goes without saying, no one can bat like Pant. And this is such a situation that India must be hoping Jurel to be himself — calm and sure of his strokeplay. On a pitch that has been historically partial to batters, India need a big innings, more so in the second, with the top six firing in unison. There have been teething problems, like Yashasvi Jaiswal's two ducks in the second innings at Lord's and Manchester. And the No.3 slot is still pretty tentative, meaning Shubman Gill has had to shoulder more responsibility than usual, apart from India tinkering with the batting order due to Pant's injury at Old Trafford. In a must-win Test, Jurel's addition might just be what India need to soothe the nerves.

Indian players refuse to play Pakistan in WCL semis
Mumbai: In solidarity with the prevailing anti-Pakistan sentiment in the country, a number of leading ex-India cricketers refused to play ball with Pakistan, having qualified for the semi-final scheduled on Thursday in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) being played in England. It is learnt India's no show in the semis will give the Pakistan Champions side direct entry into the final, to face South Africa or Australia on Saturday. The organisers are yet to make an announcement. Before the Indian team led by Yuvraj Singh made their stand known to the organisers, Indian sponsors EaseMyTrip had refused to be associated with the match, leaving the contest in troubled waters. 'We applaud Team India @India_Champions for their outstanding performance in the World Championship of Legends, you've made the nation proud. However, the upcoming semi-final against Pakistan is not just another game. Terror and cricket cannot go hand in hand. EaseMyTrip, we stand with India. We cannot support any event that attempts to normalise relations with a country that promotes terrorism. The people of India have spoken and we hear them. EaseMyTrip will not be associated with the India vs Pakistan match in WCL. Some things are bigger than sport. Nation first, business later. Always. The league claimed to have garnered over 325 million viewers in the inaugural edition last year, on the back of a blockbuster final where India Champions beat Pakistan Champions. Like every other cricket tournament, the India-Pakistan face-off is the marquee clash. Relations between the countries deteriorated sharply this year following an intense four-day military conflict — their worst standoff in decades — that killed more than 70 people in missile, drone and artillery fire on both sides. The conflict was triggered by the April 22 terror attack on civilians in Kashmir that New Delhi accused Pakistan of backing. Saying no to cricket with Pakistan has been hotly debated in the ongoing parliament session with many opposition party members questioning the government on the men's Asia Cup going ahead in the UAE with India and Pakistan scheduled to clash more than once. BCCI requires the government's nod for an India-Pakistan contest even in a multi-nation tournament. In the WCL, Shikhar Dhawan was the first Indian player to opt out of the Pakistan match during the league stage. In an angry response, Pakistan's Shahid Afridi called him a 'rotten egg' while speaking to the local media. Among other players in the team, Harbhajan Singh is a Rajya Sabha MP and Yusuf Pathan a Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MP from Behrampore. The national general secretary of Pathan's party, Abhishek Banerjee, said on Monday that India must not engage with Pakistan in any sphere and that the only engagement with that country should be on the battlefield.

‘You can't go and ask the coach not to inspect pitch': Curator slammed; Gautam Gambhir 'had every right of losing it'

'It's unfortunate that kind of incident has happened. But Gautam had all the right of just losing it. As a curator, obviously, you can't go and ask someone not to inspect the pitch,' Parthiv told PTI Videos. Gambhir, a former India opener and known for his no-nonsense approach, was seen confronting Fortis in a widely circulated video where he stated, 'You don't tell any of us what we need to do… you are just a groundsman, nothing beyond.' Fortis, in response, warned he might report the incident. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, who was also present during the altercation, later described Fortis' conduct as unnecessarily rigid. 'When we went to take a look at the wicket, the coaches were there. Someone came and said 'stand 2.5 metres away,' which was a little surprising. Day after, there is a Test match—we had joggers on, not spikes—and it felt a bit awkward,' Kotak told reporters. Kotak also noted that Indian players had previously flagged Fortis as 'not the easiest person to work with,' adding, 'It's okay to be protective and possessive about the pitch, but not to this extent.' Parthiv, who has played under Gambhir in the past and is now mentoring the Outer Delhi Warriors in the Delhi Premier League, doubled down on the idea that pitch inspection is well within a head coach's responsibilities. 'That's the head coach's role. What else are you expecting? If a head coach won't go and inspect the pitch, that's not possible at all,' he said. Parthiv further described the incident as reflective of an 'entitled behaviour' that he suggested was becoming common in England's cricketing environment. With the fifth Test starting Thursday and India trailing the series 2-1, Parthiv expressed confidence in the team's ability to level the series. 'We've played really well. Even in tough situations, the team has responded with character. India has been great throughout the series and definitely has a strong chance of making it 2-2.' He also backed young wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel, who is likely to replace the injured Rishabh Pant in the lineup. 'Dhruv Jurel is an equally able player. We've seen what he's done in the home series last year against England,' Parthiv said. 'Obviously, you can't fill in the shoes of Rishabh Pant. But Dhruv has shown he's a capable player to represent India.' As the spotlight remains firmly on the Oval after the coaching staff's run-in with ground officials, Gambhir's fiery leadership style is once again at the center of attention—this time with solid backing from a former teammate.
